[00:00:34] Unknown:
Awesome. How are you, Co?
[00:00:37] Unknown:
I'm doing good. How are you, Brody? Great. For episode two. I'm excited. Yay. Doing that again.
[00:00:44] Unknown:
Yeah. Not as Yeah. Not as nervous, but
[00:00:49] Unknown:
still, a little moment. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. I think he still got some, some bugs to work out, but
[00:00:58] Unknown:
that's still on. Right? Never find I need something better for my microphone. So it's, like, hanging, and you don't hear my click in the mice and stuff.
[00:01:09] Unknown:
Oh, you hit you turn it off in between?
[00:01:13] Unknown:
No. I just I think you can hear things when I like, you can you can hear that. Right?
[00:01:19] Unknown:
I can. Yeah. It's not super loud, though.
[00:01:23] Unknown:
I don't know. Need to set something up a little better. So wanna start us off with a new story. I, Yeah. Yeah. So I was looking at the well, we wanna bring something local, which we were talking about is harder to harder to do, not because we don't have a lot of local news, but because you try to bring something unique each time, unique to us, and it seems like there's a lot of national news on our local news. And then there's, a lot of just, like, not real interesting stories. So it's harder to do than I thought. So we didn't we didn't wanna do this, the big story of our area for this week, because it's kind of on the national news, but probably good to talk about anyway. There was that, the murder suicide where that mother was having a hard time and ended up killing her three children and and then herself.
Looks like the the police were called over there early in the morning before school to do a welfare check, and, it turned into some kind of standoff. And it ended up to, when they and then they heard some gunshots went in, and she was dead and her three kids. There was a 14 year old girl and two five year old twins. And it just every news story you read, it's like there's there's an awesome community in that area, and they were all really close. And they're really torn apart by this happening in their neighborhood. And I Yeah.
I tried to put myself in their shoes, and for me, put myself in in her shoes. Like, how how bad could it be where you're you feel like you're just in such a spot where you have to take your kids' lives on your own.
[00:03:56] Unknown:
Just feel really bad for more about that too. I didn't really see any other, information besides he was involuntarily admitted for mental health sometime in the past, and, another arrest with, a lot of before that. And legally, she wasn't a little transport of firearms.
[00:04:28] Unknown:
Yeah. Poor lady.
[00:04:35] Unknown:
I wonder what the welfare check is for, but I also do see another, like, another neighbor had said something in one of the news articles about, babysitting her kids often, and she would always look forward for that.
[00:04:51] Unknown:
Yeah. I read the isn't that sad?
[00:04:55] Unknown:
It is so
[00:04:57] Unknown:
sad. And you would you would just beat yourself up over that. Like, did I say something last time to where she felt like she couldn't talk to me?
[00:05:06] Unknown:
Right.
[00:05:07] Unknown:
Yeah. Yeah. This caught national news. It's been written about a lot. I a lot of places I looked and just a sad thing to be happening here. I don't think it's normal for our area. We got a really nice nice people in the Hampton Roads Hampton Roads area. But it's something real sad, and I, pray for those people in that air in that neighborhood that's really going through it. And I I guess the, fathers of those children, I, there was a father of the twins and then a father of the 14 year old girl that, can't imagine what they're going through now. I
[00:05:54] Unknown:
don't know. I mean, it's I don't need to do it. Like, the what you could what could be going through your mind. You know, it's bad enough that you hear about other people dying and these four boys that they wanna touch this home when it's your own kids, and it's at the hands of their little mother. It's like, I don't I don't know how to register that. You know? Right.
[00:06:19] Unknown:
Definitely. That's super sad. Hopefully, you got a better better story for your news article.
[00:06:26] Unknown:
That's depressing today. I do have a story. It's not a happy story. It's about this, postal worker. Her name was Keisha Brown. This was in the news earlier, in the week and last week. Back in October, she was arrested. And since then, she's plead guilty to one count of death of no matter. And according to the court records, back in June 2023, they we started receiving complaints about check fraud and mail theft from the postal station. And then by February 24, this, person, Keisha Brown, was the sis the suspect. And, investigators put undercover cameras in her postal vehicle, and, they said that they caught her on camera using drugs as well as rummaging through and stealing mail.
And miss Brown says that she did it to support her daughter and her drug habit. And, during her interview with the authorities, she pulled out 29 pieces of mail that was hidden in her jacket and gave them to the agents. And she said she'd steal the mail and give it to an unnamed accomplish accomplish. And, just one thing, I guess, one incident of this, one check was stolen and it was for a hundred and $46, but they altered it to be for over 4,008 hundred dollars.
[00:07:58] Unknown:
They altered one of the checks?
[00:08:01] Unknown:
Yeah. So stealing mail and some of these included checks, and did they change the amount on the checks? You know? And then one business owner said that 16 checks were stolen from the mail.
[00:08:17] Unknown:
Jeez, man. You know? I got a lot of a lot of thoughts about that one. It was, so one is the mail. Like, I I just asked our mailman because I've been seeing a lot of, like, national news about people beating up their mailman and taking away taking the packages and stuff. I'm like, is that really happening? So I asked our mailman, and he went on how, yeah, it's happening a lot around here. Couple of the local mailman have been had guns pulled on them recently, right when they're, you know, going to I guess there's a special key that they all have to open the big, mailbox stations where there's a bunch of mailbox, boxes in there. They can open up the back of it and stick the mail in there.
So somebody will pull a gun on them and say, give me your key. And they're trained to just give them the key and leave it alone. And he said a bunch of them have had that happen recently, So they get training for what to do, and he said he hasn't had it happen yet. But but, yeah, it's been happening a lot. And I just think about what's going on in society because you're you're not just stealing for, for yourself at that point. Right? Like, the mail is a national thing. You screw that up, and you're you're messing up our society.
If you can't get mail to your house, you can't get mail, like, then it's not it's not gonna be the same. You're gonna have to go somewhere to get all your packages or anything, or you're gonna have to travel a lot more. It's so nice to be able to just order something on Amazon and get it to your house and, you know, you start messing with the mail and it's gonna change things.
[00:10:28] Unknown:
It's like, what are what are things coming to? You know? The mailman used to be just like the friendly guy delivering the letters and the packages that she waved to when the dogs bark at. Right. He goes about his business and now I don't know. Let's the I mean, I know what the motive is. People wanna steal stuff that doesn't belong to them, but we've gotten to the point to where we're sticking up mailmen.
[00:10:53] Unknown:
Right.
[00:10:54] Unknown:
Like there's somebody trying to do an honest job.
[00:11:00] Unknown:
Right. What's going on?
[00:11:03] Unknown:
I'm so crazy.
[00:11:04] Unknown:
Yeah. I don't like it.
[00:11:07] Unknown:
Not at all.
[00:11:10] Unknown:
We have the best mailman, though. I love him. No. I just
[00:11:15] Unknown:
speak to my mailman sometimes. My driveway is long, so when I see him down there, I wave. But
[00:11:21] Unknown:
other than that, I haven't really spoke to him. We got our our mailbox still by the house, so he has to come up and but so is our neighbors. So he just walks right across our lawns up to the door almost, and it's really cool. He's a great guy. We talk about things all the time, and he stops and just talks, and he's great.
[00:11:42] Unknown:
Nice.
[00:11:43] Unknown:
Yeah. He's hoping to retire to Florida. Community. Yeah. He's hoping to retire soon. I'm like, no. You can't. We love you. He's awesome. But it's cold out there right now.
[00:12:01] Unknown:
It sure is.
[00:12:02] Unknown:
Is it supposed to stay cold? Yeah. It's 36 degrees at my house, and it's 37 degrees out at the airport. And it's supposed to stay cold tomorrow and a high of 66 on Thursday, though. Isn't that crazy? I don't know why that one day is just so hot. And it's raining right now. There was snow this morning.
[00:12:34] Unknown:
And Are we expecting, any more snow?
[00:12:38] Unknown:
No. It's just gonna rain tonight, tomorrow, and into Thursday. And hot on Thursday, but then it'll cool right back off 43 degrees on Friday. Tonight, there's a high tide at 07:48. And I've been starting to look at the tides because I got a kayak for Christmas.
[00:13:04] Unknown:
So I should pay more attention to tides too because every time there is a high tide, my yard floods.
[00:13:11] Unknown:
Oh, yeah? Yeah. We were I think that's the story of a lot of people around here. Took over the,
[00:13:17] Unknown:
Elizabeth River. So
[00:13:21] Unknown:
You get that high tide and and the rain? Yeah.
[00:13:25] Unknown:
Yeah. And then I can't let my dog out. Oh, yeah. It's all it's all bad.
[00:13:31] Unknown:
Because he comes in back in all muddy or because he doesn't wanna go out? Yeah.
[00:13:36] Unknown:
She knows. She she gets all muddy, and then she's all excited because she's been running around. I was like, well, at least I have to stay outside so I could wipe you down.
[00:13:46] Unknown:
That's awesome. So And there's a small craft warning in effect today and tomorrow, and, it'll be in there till Thursday night. So but why do you think there's not a small craft warning on Friday when the wind is still gonna be up? Is that weird to you? See. Because there's a small craft warning through Thursday, but there's not one on Friday. Is it because it's too far out?
[00:14:30] Unknown:
I don't know. Kitney is not one. Is it is it not is it meeting criteria?
[00:14:36] Unknown:
Yeah. It's 28 knots.
[00:14:39] Unknown:
I'm looking at a different, probably something different from what you're looking at right now. I'm not seeing criteria for small fry. Yeah. Yeah. I'm I'm seeing, when's out of the Northeast 13 on Friday.
[00:14:56] Unknown:
Oh, maybe I'm just too local looking at too local of a forecast. Out at the Chesapeake light. It's supposed to be 28 knots on Friday. So I got something kind of fun. I ran that through AI to say what a sportscaster would sound like if you said that.
[00:15:35] Unknown:
Okay.
[00:15:37] Unknown:
Because ladies and gentlemen, sports fans of Hampton Roads, this is your cartoonishly charismatic weather caster reporting live from the field with the latest in weather drama. First up, the title showdown. High tide will be making an appearance at 07:48PM. Get your floaties ready. On the precipitation pitch, it's wet and wild match. Rain's been dominating the game and won't be passing the ball until Thursday night. Grab your umbrellas, folks, because it's a slippery field out there. Score update. It's a cool contest. The Mercury's at 36 degrees at the house and a degree hotter at the airport coming in at 37 degrees. Bundle up tonight with a low of 36 degrees, but fear not, Thursday's warming trend is set to take the lead with the highest 66 degrees.
Attention all seafarers and sailors, a small craft warning is in full swing and will stay in effect until Thursday night. So keep those boats docked safely and avoid those choppy waters.
[00:16:35] Unknown:
So there you have. Another I'm just reading that. Were you reading that? Yeah. Oh, okay. I was like, I wonder if, like, it recorded you saying it, and then they can play back your voice as you sounding like the sportscaster. I was I was listening to see if I could tell.
[00:16:50] Unknown:
I wonder if you could. Probably train it with your voice. Yeah. Yeah. Let me phone it. Or you can I had to do a limerick too? Wanna hear that?
[00:17:06] Unknown:
Sure.
[00:17:07] Unknown:
In Hampton Roads, rains on parade till Thursday night, it won't fade. With temps at 36, the chill's in the mix, but Thursday brings a warming cascade. The high tide's at at 07:48. Small crafts beware, it's not safe to navigate. Friday's windy with sun, but the rain's not done till Thursday. It's a wet and wild state.
[00:17:34] Unknown:
I don't know if I should, like, snap, you know, like, a little poetry reading. Right.
[00:17:41] Unknown:
Kind of fun,
[00:17:43] Unknown:
Well, hey. Let's talk about some stuff going on around our area.
[00:17:49] Unknown:
Yeah. Let's talk about Have you heard
[00:17:51] Unknown:
Yeah. That this, I'm sorry to cut you off. I didn't know you were kinda No. I just I wanted to, mention the value for value real quick. Oh, go ahead.
[00:18:01] Unknown:
So we're doing the podcast on, value for value system. So if you get any value out of the show, give some back, and that can be in the form of art. Like, we need to, show art and or intro sounds or outro sounds or need some kind of sound to go towards the weather, like, I don't know, something fun. And then something when we transition to the tips or local news, or, you can give us a tip if you found some value on the show. And then, if you find some local news that would be fun to talk about or in the form of monetary. We did set up tidewatertalk.com, and there's a donation page on there so that I can get a new microphone stand.
But we've got tips now. Go ahead Co, what do you got?
[00:19:08] Unknown:
Yeah. So hey. Did you know that Norfolk is called the Mermaid City? I know that's a silly question to ask. I didn't.
[00:19:17] Unknown:
Issues. Yeah.
[00:19:19] Unknown:
Yeah. So in the it's like the first sentence of this article that I was looking at. It says, the city of Norfolk and Carnival Cruise Line are celebrating the launch of year round cruises from the Mermaid City. So on Tuesday, the 3,700 passenger Carnival Sunshine embarked on, twenty twenty five's first weekly cruise vacation offered from the city's half moon cruise center. So these cruises leave North Vogue and go to The Bahamas and back. They the carnival expects about a 50,000 passengers a year, and the city estimates that it'll create about a $19,000,000 impact economically.
So some good stuff for our city. And also some good stuff for us if you're planning a vacation and you don't know what to do. Like, we have the port right here. You can plan the leave from here and come back to here.
[00:20:27] Unknown:
Hello? Oh, sorry. I didn't know I was muted. Have you ever taken a cruise out of here?
[00:20:33] Unknown:
Not out of here. No. I think, we wanted to I think it was last summer, but then they have, like, that I don't know. Something happened where they weren't doing before. Oh, I might need to cut that. That's awesome. That's true.
[00:20:50] Unknown:
It'll bring back some didn't go?
[00:20:53] Unknown:
What's that? I I said I'm I was trying to remember if that was the reason why we didn't go. I don't remember. Oh, yeah. No. We haven't taken No. I haven't. Not out of here. But I'm I'd I'd be excited to take a nice little three or five day to The Bahamas and that. Yeah. That'd be awesome. How long does it take to get down to The Bahamas from here? I think it's a two day trip, but Yeah. I'd have to look look into that.
[00:21:23] Unknown:
Cool. I love seeing the cruise ships going over when I'm going into the Hampton Bridge Tunnel. Yeah. Seeing those massive ships. Yeah. I've never taken a cruise.
[00:21:36] Unknown:
Oh, no. It's pretty.
[00:21:38] Unknown:
Is it?
[00:21:40] Unknown:
Yeah. I mean, depending on what you like to do. Right? Because there's a lot of them especially on the carnival lines, there's, like, the gambling and stuff with the kids and the shows and the and the pools and all of the food and all that cool stuff. Kinda get on the ship and forget about everything that's going on back on. She walked away a few days. It's how I like to do it.
[00:22:07] Unknown:
It'd be awesome. I'm jealous of one of you on.
[00:22:12] Unknown:
You got to.
[00:22:13] Unknown:
Did not know that it was called the Mermaid City, but, yeah, you see all those, and I wonder if there's, anybody that tracks where all those statues are at.
[00:22:27] Unknown:
That tracks where the what's at? Where all the mermaid statues are at because there's some awesome ones around here. There are some cool ones. I like to see how they're all painted different and stuff.
[00:22:39] Unknown:
If anybody knows where to find all the statues, like a map of all the statues so we can go around and look at them, that'd be a cool thing to know about.
[00:22:49] Unknown:
Or even maybe like a scavenger hunt. Yeah. Exactly.
[00:22:52] Unknown:
Yeah. I went to the library a couple days ago with my boy. Mhmm. It was so fun, actually. We I found out that,
[00:23:07] Unknown:
What'd you guys do at the library? That was fun.
[00:23:10] Unknown:
So they you can check out a pickleball set. Did you know that? No. I didn't. Yeah. You can check out all kinds of cool stuff like board games and video games, and we checked out a pickleball set because me and my daughter have been playing tennis. Mhmm. So we go over to the tennis court and see all these other people playing pickleball. It's, like, used a lot, the pickleball court is. Nobody's ever on the tennis court, which has kinda kept us away from pickleball. Yeah. Exactly. But you can rent out or is it renting or just checking out at the library? But we checked out a pickleball set. So once it warms up on Friday, get the sun out, we're gonna go try it out.
And they had all kinds of awesome stuff at the library. They had the pickleball set, and then there was a little thing for kids to make Valentines. Mhmm. And it was all set up with, some cut out hearts and crayons and pens and stuff to color, some Valentine's. And then there was a a seed cafe or a seed stand. So all the the master gardeners around here are going to some of the libraries and put it putting up a little stand that says what's the best thing to grow right now. And there was actually seeds of turnips because that's the best thing to start growing right now. And, you can take a sample of some seeds. Yeah. We took some. And then I realized I don't know much about tune ups.
So we're gonna learn about tune ups. It's a good time to learn. Alright.
[00:24:58] Unknown:
We're gonna grow some tune ups. Are like a a forgotten about resource, you know, because I know for me when I think about library, I just think about what I used to use a library for, right? You go in and not borrow, but look at the reference books because they never let you take them home and then go and read other stuff. You know, they just want it really fun fun. Right. But, yeah, I should go see what they what kind of things they're doing at local libraries these days. Yeah. It was really fun. And there was a three d printer.
[00:25:34] Unknown:
There was a couple of three d printers. So Right. Yeah. I looked into that. You can actually you just bring your file in, and you can download those printable files anywhere. And you bring that in and plug it into their three d printer, and it'll print it for you. Also have those I've never
[00:25:58] Unknown:
used the three d printer before, but I went to, my mother-in-law had a Super Bowl party at her house this weekend, and we went over there. And her and her husband are, like, really into Christmas. So they have, like, these huge Christmas villages with, like, all these little statues of people doing different things, like ice skating or working in a shop or hanging out on streets or doing snowballs or whatever. But she started making her own little miniatures for her Christmas village. And so she's, like, printing out all these little figurines and painting them and they're all cute. And I'm like, I was like, man, my mother-in-law knows how to use a three three d printer, and I don't.
I'm behind.
[00:26:43] Unknown:
Isn't that fun? Yeah. We got one, and it's fun to just print all the all kinds of stuff, fun stuff. I really I love it for, when it's really useful. Right? Like, I had a a light switch the other day. I was looking one side of it. There's no light switch in it, and the other side, there is. So try to find a plate where there's a blank on one side and a switch on the other. And I couldn't find one at Home Depot, so I came home and printed it. Just exactly the plate that I needed for covering the light switch. And then I volunteer over at, Katz.
It's, children's they're gonna kill me for not knowing. What is it? Children's
[00:27:44] Unknown:
Is it the assistive technology?
[00:27:46] Unknown:
Yeah. Children's assistive technology. I Googled it. I didn't know that. Yeah. You're faster than that. Good job. I volunteer over there fixing, like, wheelchairs and standers and all the, things to help kids with mobility and, speech. They have little the things that help them talk, like little computer screens and all kinds of stuff to help kids with assistive technology. So I go over there and fix stuff that's been donated so that it can be donated back out to kids that are in need and can't get insurance or whatever.
[00:28:25] Unknown:
That's really cool. Yeah. But the other day, they were gonna heard of this place.
[00:28:29] Unknown:
You haven't? Mhmm. It's amazing. It's a great charity in the area. Yeah. Currently, they're just in Hampton Roads, but or, no, they're all over Virginia. But, hopefully, they get bigger and bigger. It's a great place. But the other day, I had a wheelchair that they were just gonna throw away because the foot, the part where you put your foot on that swings around, it wouldn't swing because there was a bushing missing. And so I just came home and printed the bushing, and now you have this awesome wheelchair that some kid can use and get to the bathroom or go outside by himself or something.
It was really cool. So that's where I love the three d printing.
[00:29:22] Unknown:
So is the bushing like, a hard part to get?
[00:29:26] Unknown:
No. It's just just for that wheelchair. It was just where that thing sits. You just need something to fill up the space where the, foot piece is swinging around the side because the bar that goes into the wheelchair is smaller than the wheelchair bar, if that makes sense. So you need something to fill up that space so that it's not rocking around and falling out. Okay. So just came home and printed it. Really cool. The library also had cricket machines. You heard of those? They cut out vinyl
[00:30:05] Unknown:
pictures. Arts and crafts. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. My mother-in-law also has that. Oh, yeah? Another thing that I've never used.
[00:30:14] Unknown:
Yeah. I haven't used one either, but I'd like to try one. And then they have they had a career coach sitting there. I didn't go talk to him, but there's a career coach, with a sign over the door and somebody just sitting there waiting to talk to you about how to get a new career or change your resume or something.
[00:30:38] Unknown:
Okay.
[00:30:39] Unknown:
Yeah. And I was telling my wife about it. She said that the central library even has a cafe so you can go get a coffee or tea while you're looking at stuff or doing your three d printing.
[00:30:54] Unknown:
Tell you what, libraries sound a lot different than
[00:30:58] Unknown:
than I remember them. Right? It was really cool.
[00:31:03] Unknown:
