Good evening, neighbors, and welcome to another episode of Tidewater Talk with your hosts, Brodie and Co. This week, we dive into the local happenings and share some fascinating stories and updates from around the Tidewater area.
We kick off the episode discussing the inevitable arrival of pollen season and the impact it has on our daily lives, from yellow cars to sneezing fits. Co shares a humorous personal anecdote about being behind on laundry, despite having fewer kids at home.
Co introduces a significant study from Old Dominion University, which analyzed the potential economic impact of a category three hurricane hitting the region. The study estimates a staggering $15.6 billion in direct damages and a temporary loss of over 76,000 jobs. We ponder the logistics and challenges of evacuating the area in such an event.
In lighter news, we reminisce about childhood memories with a correction about the character names in "Fox and the Hound," and discuss the surprising dust that traveled all the way from Texas and New Mexico to Virginia.
We provide a detailed weather forecast for the week, highlighting the upcoming Shamrock Marathon events and the expected conditions for runners. We also share some weekend events, including the Dinner Detective Comedy Show, the Harlem Globetrotters, and family-friendly activities at the Children's Museum.
Co shares a funny story about a cultural misunderstanding involving a cigarette offer, and we discuss the exciting developments at the beach, including a new venue and Wave Garden.
We wrap up with a discussion on the implementation of speed cameras in school zones in Virginia Beach, weighing the pros and cons of such measures.

[00:00:24] Brodie:
I'm Brodie, and I'm wondering when my car is gonna turn yellow.
[00:00:29] Co:
Oh, yeah. All the pollen.
[00:00:32] Brodie:
Yeah. It's coming.
[00:00:34] Co:
Yeah. You know it. And it covers everything.
[00:00:38] Brodie:
Everything. You know, it's you can see some of the buds starting on the trees, so
[00:00:43] Co:
you know it's coming real soon. Yeah. We have daffodils in the front Yeah? Already. So oh, yes.
[00:00:50] Brodie:
We got those white, is it cherry blossoms? It's not just cherry blossoms. It's other things around here that those white leaves blossoming.
[00:01:03] Co:
Maybe like what is it called? Like a something pear tree?
[00:01:07] Brodie:
Maybe. But it's the it's the pine pollen that covers everything. Right?
[00:01:15] Co:
I'm not sure. Yeah.
[00:01:17] Brodie:
I don't know. Allergy season is coming too, though. That's what that's gonna be bad. I probably already it's probably already came my way. Is that why you're getting a little bit of a cold?
[00:01:30] Co:
I don't know if it's a cold or allergies, but all of a sudden, I'm sneezing, and my, nose is stuffy. Yeah. Coughing. Yeah. So I will introduce myself. Hi. I'm Coe, and I'm behind on laundry.
[00:01:49] Brodie:
Behind on laundry? Yes. Isn't all your kids moved out?
[00:01:55] Co:
All but one. Oh, Yeah. And I don't do his laundry.
[00:02:05] Brodie:
No excuses then?
[00:02:08] Co:
None.
[00:02:09] Brodie:
Just kidding.
[00:02:10] Co:
None. I'm just telling on myself.
[00:02:13] Brodie:
No. It's just busy. It just seems like life is busier lately.
[00:02:17] Co:
It does. Well Now let's dive into today's episode. Let's dive into it. Alright. I'll kick it off. So I actually I have a study today to talk about. It's a study from ODU that began after hurricane Florence, which initially was thought to be headed towards Hampton Roads before it changed course and made landfall down in Wilmington, North Carolina. But that prompted the researchers at Old Dominion to ask the question, what would the economic impact be of a category three hurricane hit the region? So from the study, they estimated the cost would be 15,600,000,000.0 in direct damages, which is equal to 10% of the twenty twenty two regional gross domestic product.
And that's a a temporary loss more than 76,000 jobs. Wow. Yeah. They had a bunch of information in, like, how they did the study and came up with the numbers and stuff, but I was like, I saved that for another time.
[00:03:30] Brodie:
I Yeah. You just imagine that when they talk about what's your flood zone and what's this what would happen around here. I can't imagine having to get on the highway when they change all the the directions so that both directions are going one way and those entrance and extra ramp things come down.
[00:03:53] Co:
Just You mean, like, building it or when they, like, reroute it? Yeah. When they reroute everybody so that,
[00:04:01] Brodie:
all of the highways are going out of here instead of letting anybody in.
[00:04:07] Co:
Oh, yeah. I don't even know how they do the, what is it? The the lane. What the toll lane. Because they switch directions on that. Yeah. That sounds
[00:04:20] Brodie:
well, they would do that to the other lane the whole other lane too so that everybody can just leave. Yeah.
[00:04:28] Co:
But then, like, just, you know, different parts of the region are going in it, you know, different parts open, or maybe they do them all the same way at the same time, I'd imagine. I don't know. Yep. Never thought about it. But
[00:04:41] Brodie:
Yeah. I have too much. It's scary. I just can't imagine trying to pack your family up and get on the highway, and I don't wanna do that.
[00:04:52] Co:
Yeah.
[00:04:53] Brodie:
Guess it's kinda what what we're signed up for around here, though.
[00:04:58] Co:
Yeah.
[00:04:59] Brodie:
It'd be a 15,600,000,000.0 impact.
[00:05:04] Co:
Right. Yeah.
[00:05:07] Brodie:
That's a lot. I need to start off with an apology to you. Remember last time we were talking about, the fox kits? You said be the kid fox called a Kit. And I was like, really? From you didn't watch Fox and the Hound? And the character was Kit? Well, he wasn't Yeah. Was that just his name? I thought it was Kit, but it was Todd. Okay. So I was acting all smart. Did you go back and watch it? No. I just looked it up. But then I felt really bad for acting like I was all smart and Because you remembered the characters on Fox and the Yeah. He's named Todd. He's not named Kit. So I don't know why I knew that they're named Kit.
[00:05:55] Co:
Well, Kit would have been a better name. Yeah. Right?
[00:05:59] Brodie:
Mhmm. And then I have a weather news thing too. Do you notice that your car was dusty on Friday?
[00:06:08] Co:
Or when you woke up been dusty for about a month.
[00:06:12] Brodie:
Yeah. When we woke up on Saturday morning, there there was an extra layer of dust on it. And it's Mhmm. Because there was actually dust that came all the way across from Texas and New Mexico Mhmm. All the way over The US and dropped stuff all the way over here in Virginia. Really cool. It's amazing. Yeah. Yeah. You can watch it on satellite. There's those dust channels now where highlights just the dust particles. You can watch it go all the way over The US. Really cool. Are you ready for some weather? Oh,
[00:06:54] Co:
I am. Yeah.
[00:06:57] Brodie:
Right now, it is 69 degrees out by you guys
[00:07:02] Co:
on Chesapeake.
[00:07:03] Brodie:
Goodness sakes. It's 62 up by ORF and 65 out of Oceana. Wind out of the north, northeast, five knots. Tomorrow, we're looking at sunny with a high of 62 ish. Probably warmer for you guys again because it's still out of the north. And then, Thursday, got a little bit of increase in clouds and high of 59. And then Friday is high of six or 55 and mostly sunny. But then Saturday is the marathon start. We got the 8k on Saturday. And it starts at 07:30. It'll be 50 degrees, and it'll climb to about 55, 60 depending on how fast you run. I'm always at the back of the pack, so I mean, but slight winds, partly cloudy, that'll be an awesome day to run.
[00:08:20] Co:
Yeah.
[00:08:21] Brodie:
At 8k. The kids start at 11:00. So for that final mile, isn't that where the one where they do a a bunch of running with the schools, and then they come out and do the final mile?
[00:08:39] Co:
I'm not I don't know. I think so. And then like a thing that's a thing they do, like,
[00:08:45] Brodie:
everywhere, or you're just talking about for the Shamrock? Just for the Shamrock. So a lot of the local schools will participate and say they're gonna train for this, final mile. They'll do a bunch of running during the school year, and they're all training up. Then they come out for the, the final mile at the marathon course.
[00:09:11] Co:
Oh. Just do a mile Only did I only did this race once, so they probably came out before before I made it to the final mile. I was like, we gotta go home.
[00:09:26] Brodie:
Maybe. They're doing it after the eight k, though. So they'll do it at 11:00 on Saturday. And that'll be 60 degrees with slight winds, partly cloudy. So Saturday will be an awesome day for running. Sunday, when the marathon and half marathon are going, it'll be 62 to start, which is too hot for a marathon. Climbing to 70. I don't know. It is for me, at least. Climbing to about 70 by noon and raining. It'll, it'll be off and on rain, but it'll be gusty winds out of the south at 17 miles an hour, gusting at 30 miles an hour. So I know that course is terrible for the winds, and at least it'll be out of the South instead of off the water from the east.
Man, I did Yeah. I did that one year. I was guiding a blind marathoner that was pushing a disabled person, and he,
[00:10:33] Co:
This is like a a train of people.
[00:10:36] Brodie:
Yeah. With Ainsley's Marath Ainsley's Angels. It was a really cool experience. But we got to one spot that sand had blown up onto the course. There was sleet and freezing rain, and it was just the worst. And then he couldn't push through that sand. I mean, he eventually got it, but it was just horrible and hard. And Yeah. Man. So this one will be a little bit better than that, but it'll be hot, and we'll probably get some rain off and on. And then you still got that gusty wind. Mhmm. And then they have that upholstery celebration till 04:00. It's gonna be raining, but they usually got the good tents and, good soups and keep it warm.
It'd be fun.
[00:11:30] Co:
Yep. Are you going out?
[00:11:33] Brodie:
No. My wife is. She's Yeah? Yeah. She just had a back surgery on in end of November, so she's pretty scared that she's not ready for it. But I think she's gonna be awesome. Too. And I don't think she's But also
[00:11:54] Co:
yeah. Just to know that you don't have to do it. You know? Yeah. You're doing this for fun and because you want to. So if you get a little bit uncomfortable, it's no shame in walking off. Right. Exactly.
[00:12:07] Brodie:
That's exactly what she's thinking is that it won't hurt my feelings if I walk off of this one. So might as well go out and do it because I already paid for it. At least go and get the swag. Well, you probably already did that at the expo. Yeah. That's what she's most sad about if she walks off is she doesn't get the hat. Those hats are off.
[00:12:32] Co:
Yeah. Yeah. Well, for the folks not going to the marathon this weekend, I got a a few thing other things going on this weekend. So on the fifteenth, there is a in that Saturday, the dinner detective comedy show at Apex in Virginia Beach from six to nine. The Harlem Globetrotters will be at Chartway Arena on the fifteenth.
[00:13:00] Brodie:
Really? From two to six. Yes. I gotta go see them again. I saw them once when I was, like, real little kid. It was awesome, and I haven't seen them since.
[00:13:12] Co:
Yeah. They're always awesome. Just I don't know. I think it's cool. Yeah. I don't know what this is. Maybe you know your kids are younger than mine, but Andelos library?
[00:13:25] Brodie:
No? I don't know.
[00:13:28] Co:
Okay. Well, that's at the Children's Museum in Portsmouth from eleven to three on Saturday. And then on Sunday, Thomas and friends explore the rails at, the children's museum from 9AM to 4PM.
[00:13:46] Brodie:
Cool. I'm gonna have to will you send me a link you got for that one?
[00:13:52] Co:
Oh, I just put this in a word doc, but yeah, I'll send it to you. Yeah.
[00:13:59] Brodie:
Just at the end. I'm sorry. I just keep forgetting. Oh, sorry. Can you hear me clicking? Yeah. So let me do that right now. Sure. No. I just I keep forgetting to tell you, put together the show notes, and then I have to look these things up. Oh, I'm sorry. No. No. No. No. Not complaining. I just always forget. Value for value. Did I I didn't forget anything this time. Right? Okay. Cool. So we operate on a value for value system. If you get some value out of this, then we ask you give value back. And that can be in the form of time, talent, or treasure. If you have any artwork or you got some tips that we can share with our neighbors and or some, if you could make a intro or outro sound or something or monetary value, give that back to us. There's a place to donate on our website at tidewatertalk.com.
And I have the email address working now. So [email protected]. You can send your tips. And for monetary value, we'll read your note if you give something. So, it's kind of a way to advertise if you wanted to. Yeah. And and
[00:15:26] Co:
We'd be happy to read your notes.
[00:15:29] Brodie:
Right. Did a good one from my mom last week.
[00:15:35] Co:
I'll say thanks to her again. Right. Yeah. So, Brodie, last Friday, we met up with some friends that we knew when we were stationed in Japan. Yeah. Our friend, Hickey, he's his wife is Japanese. They, they were stationed in Spain before here, but they just got here, like, a week or so ago. But Keegan's, yes, good drinks and generous portions. They good. But I have a story from this night. Right? So Yeah. His wife's Hickey's wife's name is Sakura. And so Sakura goes outside to smoke a cigarette, and she's, you know, she's like, I'll be back. I'm gonna go smoke a cigarette. I was like, alright. Cool. She comes back to the table, and she's like, this lady outside asked me for money and said she was hungry, but I told her I didn't have any money because I don't have a job.
But I have a cigarette, and I asked her if she wanted one. And then she asked me what kind, and I told her camel, and she said, ew. And then she took one anyway. And then I said, well, maybe we can talk and get to know each other. And then she just left, and she was so upset because she thought she was making a friend. I told her, next time someone asks you for money, just say I don't have any money.
[00:17:09] Brodie:
She wanted to be friends with her. That's awesome.
[00:17:13] Co:
Yeah.
[00:17:14] Brodie:
I wonder if that where were they at? So cute and innocent. Japan and then where? And then Spain. Spain? And then they came here. Yes. That's funny. I wonder if they're more like that in Spain. Oh, I don't know. Or neighborly when they're asking for money.
[00:17:34] Co:
Yeah. I don't know.
[00:17:36] Brodie:
That's funny, though. We went down to the beach on just yesterday, actually. Because you were talking about The Dome last week. Mhmm. And I tried to look up things about it, and I couldn't figure out what was going on down there just by looking up articles. So I we I took the family down there, and there is a huge venue being built there and the wave pool and everything. It's really cool. It's actually the T For The Dome wasn't up yet, so it said He Dome.
[00:18:23] Co:
It's where He man goes for entertainment.
[00:18:26] Brodie:
Right. But it's a massive building. And there it looks like there's a parking garage and place for retail stores and then, venue for, different bands and stuff. That'll be awesome.
[00:18:43] Co:
Yeah. I think it is gonna be cool. And they're opening
[00:18:46] Brodie:
May 4, Star Wars day. It's May. Oh, yeah. That's right. Yeah. With Three Dog Night, like you said. That'll be great. Then I was looking up that wave pool. It's, what do they call it? I guess this company makes those things. Now I lost where I had it. It's a wave generation thing. And so every every few seconds or every minute or something, this huge wave will come out. And on one side of it, you got, like, this six foot wave, and not on the other side. It's just a small thing for for kids. So you got all the different, levels of surfers that can be out there.
And you can ride that wave all the way to the end or however far you can make it, I guess.
[00:19:38] Co:
Seems awesome. Sounds cool. Yeah. I'm excited about it. And that part of it's indoor or gonna be indoor? It's outdoor. Oh, so it's not like a year round thing? Yeah. It says year round.
[00:19:51] Brodie:
Uh-huh. I don't Okay. I mean, I'm not gonna be out there in the middle of winter. But
[00:19:56] Co:
No? I'm sure so. Like if it was like this winter. Right.
[00:20:01] Brodie:
And I don't actually know if that's true, if it's gonna be year round or not, but
[00:20:06] Co:
should be cool. I'm excited to go there. Yeah. I'm excited to check it out and just to have another venue. You know? Right. We have, like, concerts or comedy shows or or whatever. Yeah.
[00:20:21] Brodie:
There's a whole bunch. You can go on that. You can go look up what is gonna be playing there. There's a bunch of cool stuff. You know? Yeah. Excited for it. So I wanted to add a while we were down there, we had Beach Bully. Beach Bully Barbecue was really good. Heard of it. Yeah. We were trying to find a restaurant down there. I guess a lot of them close on Mondays, and we did not know that. So we found this one that was still open called Beach Bully Barbecue. We loved it. It was great. I had or my boy had mac and cheese and love he ate a lot more than he usually does. My daughter had the chicken tenders. That's awesome. And they were not like, the crispy things you get everywhere else. These were hand breaded and wonderful.
Mhmm. My wife had Brunswick stew. Loved that. And I had the sliced beef brisket sandwich. So good.
[00:21:28] Co:
I have to check it out. What's it called again? Beach bully. Beach Bully. Yeah. Write that down.
[00:21:36] Brodie:
I'll have it in the show notes. So, yeah, Tidewater Talk, you can look at all this stuff. Oh, more piece of news I forgot. We're gonna have a blood moon on Thursday night. Thursday night, just before midnight and then into Friday. It's a total lunar eclipse that we'll be able to see from here.
[00:21:59] Co:
Awesome.
[00:22:00] Brodie:
Yeah.
[00:22:02] Co:
I've been seeing a lot a lot more, like, of that type of stuff in the news lately. Like, what was it, like, a week ago where we're talking about, like, all of the plant well, like, six planets aligning? Yeah. Doesn't it seem like the there's been a big uptick in celestial events over the last couple years? I don't know I don't know if it's a uptick or if I'm just paying attention or if it's being reported more. That's just not something that I ever, like, really cared about in the past. So but I'm noticing a lot more of it now. Yeah. Me too.
[00:22:38] Brodie:
Yeah. For anybody that wants to look for it out here, though, I forgot to mention that during the weather, we'll have about 60 cloud cover during that. And it'll be in the fifties, so should be able to go out pretty, not freeze and probably catch a glimpse of it here and there through the cloud cover. Oh, one more. I guess you could call this a tip.
[00:23:03] Co:
Virginia Beach is joy is joining the list of cities that are implementing speed cameras in school zones.
[00:23:12] Brodie:
Oh, I saw that.
[00:23:14] Co:
Yeah. So if you get caught speeding in a in a school zone that has the cameras in it, you could get a ticket for, like, up to a hundred dollars in the mail. How do you feel about that? Well, I feel like you shouldn't be speeding. Yeah. Right? And and you shouldn't speed in school zones. There's kids. Right. For sure. So so I don't mind.
[00:23:42] Brodie:
Yeah. I don't mind that we want to slow cars down around schools. Yes. That should definitely happen. What I hate is that a lot of times, those are used for, revenue. Great. Seems like when I was living up by DC, it seemed like if you go into DC, you're gonna get a ticket in the mail. No matter what, doesn't matter if you drive perfectly or not, you're gonna get either a parking ticket or some kind of ticket in the mail. Ticket, Yeah. And you're not gonna get pulled over by anybody. There's no cops around. But you're gonna get something in the mail because they do it just for income, for revenue stream.
So those cameras, I don't know. I do like that they're going into, school zones, and hopefully, they're putting them in school zones that just have that issue. And they're using it just to slow the traffic down in those areas. And if it's well, advertised, like, you go into this area and it says, hey. There's cameras around here. You need to stay slow. Then I'm all about it. Yeah. I just hate when they do it for revenue.
[00:25:04] Co:
Yeah. But there's rules. Yeah. Like like, you you gotta pay when you break the rules. Like, you're not gonna get you're not gonna get a ticket if you're going the speed limit. Not not a camera ticket.
[00:25:23] Brodie:
True. But you're also,
[00:25:25] Co:
like
[00:25:27] Brodie:
so, like, the other day, I was going through a a a light, and I was cutting the yellow a little too close, and I knew it. Mhmm. But I was doing that because I had too much weight in the back of the truck. And if I try to slam on my brakes and somebody behind me had too much weight, they're gonna run into me. Right? Mhmm. Because it's it changed, and the person behind me, I knew wasn't gonna stop as fast as me. So if a cop saw that, he would think that I was okay to be cutting that close. Like, he would understand the reasoning behind what I did. But a camera is not gonna care. They're just gonna send you a ticket. You know what I mean? Like, I'm not breaking rules, but a camera doesn't care the circumstances.
You're gonna run into circumstances driving. Right? Mhmm. And you should be able to think through them and not just have a computer tell you you're wrong.
[00:26:36] Co:
I hear you. I think in in those one off cases, you can dispute it.
[00:26:43] Brodie:
Yeah. Try it. Sorry. I'm just trying to be more contrarian with you. We get along too often.
[00:26:55] Co:
I know. I felt bad about this exchange.
[00:26:58] Brodie:
What? Why?
[00:26:59] Co:
Yeah. I was like, oh, no. We disagree.
[00:27:02] Brodie:
No. We're supposed to. Remember? I was saying we need to. Know. That's why I took it further than I would have usually.
[00:27:09] Co:
It's all good.
[00:27:12] Brodie:
Cool. I think that about wraps us up then,
[00:27:17] Co:
I think so. Awesome. What you got here? Yep. Alright. Alright. And that wraps up another week's edition of Tidewater Talk.
