[00:00:21] Brodie:
And I'm Brodie, and I'm wondering how I got the best mailman in the world.
[00:00:28] Co:
What makes him the best mailman? Man, Javier.
[00:00:32] Brodie:
He's just the best. I wave at him every day, and he waves back. And then sometimes we just stand out front and talk for a little bit. And then today because he knows my boy loves the mail. Like, he'll sit out there in his wheelchair and just wait for the mailman for hours. And Mhmm. Today, we're driving up to the house, and the mailman was, just down the block a little bit. Hadn't come to our house yet. And I stopped so that bro so that my boy could wave at him. And he's like, wait. Wait. Wait. And you could tell he was reaching in his truck to find our mail and which is cool anyway. He's, like, gonna go out of order and find our mail and yeah.
But he comes over to the truck and he's like, you don't have any mail today. My boy is just like, oh, no. But he goes, but I got a surprise for you. And he hands him a sucker. I was like, oh my gosh. You're just the coolest guy in the world. Oh, that's sweet. Man, made his day. Yeah. It was really neat. That's very sweet. Great guy.
[00:01:48] Co:
Yeah. Well, I'm Co, and I have a stack of mail that I've been meaning to shred for a very long time. And it just keep and it just keeps piling up on top of the shredder.
[00:02:04] Brodie:
Nice. My boy loves to shred too. So luckily, I can just hand it to him and it's gonna get shredded.
[00:02:12] Co:
Yeah.
[00:02:14] Brodie:
Awesome.
[00:02:15] Co:
I'm a tackle that this weekend.
[00:02:19] Brodie:
Well, if you don't enjoy it, then it's harder to get to it. Yeah. He just loves watching the shredding going on, and it's fun. So I got a question for you. Uh-oh. Okay. What did you do for your last date? Like, what did you guys go out and do and have fun with?
[00:02:41] Co:
Let's see. The first thing that comes to mind is eating. We went out to the Amber Lantern. It's a, restaurant over here in Chesapeake. It's really nice. It's on the water. They had, like, one of those predetermined menus where, like, they have the appetizers and the and, like, two to choose from. And so we got one of each. This is nice.
[00:03:10] Brodie:
Awesome. My last one, we went to the Destruction Room. Oh. Yeah. That was a lot of fun. We, me and my wife went to the Destruction Room where you rent a room for, like, half an hour, and then depending on how long you do it is how many things they give you to destroy. They give you a baseball bat and a sledgehammer and all kinds of stuff. And then you get bottles and, things people have thrown away. So an old CD player and a television and stuff, and you just get to destroy it.
[00:03:48] Co:
It's cool. It's kind of fun. Yeah. I saw I haven't been to one of those, but I saw, like, a little place in Japan that where it was just, like, a small little room, and I think it was, plates that they were, like, just throwing into this pit so you get to break plates. Nice.
[00:04:07] Brodie:
That's awesome. I'm a do that one now. My wife had so much fun doing it too. It's not really her kind of thing, so I didn't know if she'd like it. But once we got in there, she was like, yes. This is great. Remember when I was talking about sister cities last week? We're sister cities with Miyazaki, Japan, and they helped us or because of that relationship, we set up the the Red Wing Park in Virginia Beach, and then they have a park that's dedicated to Virginia Beach out there. Mhmm. Well, another story came across this week about another sister city we have.
I was like, really? How many sister cities do we have? So I looked it up, and we have six of them, actually. Okay. I know. I did not know that. And so I looked up some other places around here. Chesapeake's, Chesapeake has one set up just for a pen pal thing, but, Hampton has one and nor Newport News has one or has a few. Sounds like all these cities have sister cities. It was pretty crazy.
[00:05:30] Co:
Are they all foreign cities? Or Yeah. Yep. Oh, okay.
[00:05:35] Brodie:
Yeah. It's pretty neat. It is neat. And I got all their all the sister city websites in the show notes, but the story that came up was, because of that, you've probably seen it, the Norwegian lady statue on the boardwalk in Virginia Beach. It's, there's just this lady standing there looking out over the beach. And this is March 27 was a hundred and thirty four years since the Dictator shipwreck. So there was a ship called the dictator that wrecked off of Virginia Beach. And, it was coming from Georgia back to Norway, but because of storms, they came up or no. They came up here to replenish before crossing.
And because this gale force winds came across and, wrecked the ship, most of them died. A few people got away. But then the the figurehead because you know those old ships used to have, like, a woman carved on the front. Like a ornamental thing. Yeah. Yeah. So that floated up, and somebody got it and put it in front of a restaurant. And it was a big thing out here for a long time. Like, it was this landmark. Everybody saw this figurehead of this, Norwegian lady, and then it got, stolen. So this figurehead was stolen from the city.
It was sad.
[00:07:18] Co:
Did they ever find it? No.
[00:07:21] Brodie:
So we became sister cities with Moss, Norway, which brings up so my the news story I was really wanting to get to today is that the taste cow was stolen.
[00:07:36] Unknown:
A popular sandwich spot in Virginia Beach wants its mascot back. A giant replica cow that stood outside Taste Unlimited on Shore Drive is no longer there after the manager says someone stole it.
[00:07:54] Brodie:
So somebody stole that big cow that was in front of Taste Sandwich Shop.
[00:08:00] Co:
What do you do with it? I don't know. You just keep it in your garage.
[00:08:06] Brodie:
How did you get it? Off to your friends. Right. And how did you get it? You just pull up with your truck and steal it in the middle of the night?
[00:08:18] Co:
I don't know. You'd probably have to, I I'd imagine, hoist it up. So because it can't be light. You know?
[00:08:26] Brodie:
Right. They said it was fiberglass, but it's still not light because it's huge. And now what are you doing with it? You got it in front of your house? Yeah. Like, I could see some teenagers want they're like, I want that cow. I want that. But then what are you gonna do with it? Because you know that everybody around here knows exactly what that cow is. You're gonna get turned down eventually.
[00:08:53] Co:
I think I'm under, underestimating how big this cow is. This one Oh, you're
[00:09:00] Brodie:
rush. It's like six foot tall. It's as tall as I am.
[00:09:04] Co:
Okay.
[00:09:05] Brodie:
Yeah. It's big. It's a huge cow. I think most people know what it is. They've been you've been to Taste before. Right?
[00:09:15] Co:
I have. And no. I was thinking it was bigger than that after I don't know. Oh, really? Know why. Yeah. I don't know why I was thinking it was bigger than that.
[00:09:26] Brodie:
But you know what cow I'm talking about? You remember seeing the cow? Yeah. It's funny that it got stolen, and it was a pretty cool little video they did. The manager, the cute lady was like, we just want her cow back. She needs to be here. Pretty cute. Yeah. So we have a history of these things being stolen around here.
[00:09:52] Co:
Yeah. I guess so. So I have a article about a new business coming to Chesapeake, LS Greenlink. They are a subsidiary of LS Cable and System Ltd, and they closed on the purchase of a 96.6, acre property in Hampton Roads in the city of Chesapeake, which I already said. So they will house a new submarine power cable manufacturing facility spanning seven fifty thousand square feet and 606 foot vertical continuous organization tower that is expected to be the structure in the state when it's completed.
[00:10:43] Brodie:
Wow. That's very good. Jobs it'll bring?
[00:10:46] Co:
Let me keep reading. So it's gonna involve more than 681,000,000 investment, be fully operational by early twenty twenty eight. They'll manufacture insulated power cables at the facility that'll be used to connect offshore wind farms, such as Coastal Virginia offshore winds, which is already underway in Virginia Beach. Nice. I'm not seeing how many jobs that it'll bring, and that's the end of it. Like, 2028.
[00:11:20] Brodie:
That's good. Twenty twenty eight. Yep. We need, more jobs. Yeah. Wanna talk about the weather?
[00:11:30] Co:
It was weather time. Weather.
[00:11:33] Brodie:
It's, it was really sunny today, but it didn't seem hot. No. Seemed hot for the last few days, but today was a lot better. And too much time outside
[00:11:44] Co:
the day when I got home. It was a little bit chilly already.
[00:11:49] Brodie:
Breaking up a little bit again.
[00:11:51] Co:
Oh, I said I didn't I didn't spend much time outside today, but when I got home, it was a little bit chilly already.
[00:11:58] Brodie:
Yeah. It was. Right? Yeah. Tomorrow is gonna be about the same. High of 63, climbing to 85 Thursday, 86 Friday, and we got rain showers Friday and Friday night. And then 82 on Saturday. Doesn't look like too bad of wind for the week. Yeah. But you see the temperatures on Sunday?
[00:12:21] Co:
Sunday, 84. Oh, I got 88. Really? In Chesapeake.
[00:12:26] Brodie:
Yeah. Yeah. It's getting too hot already.
[00:12:29] Co:
You said too hot? Too hot. What do you do in 88?
[00:12:32] Brodie:
Can't go for a run? You gotta get up early to go out and exercise outside.
[00:12:37] Co:
Yeah. Get up early, go hang out at the park or walk around or run or
[00:12:45] Brodie:
what else. Go ride your motorcycle or go boating, fishing. If you have any tips from our neighbors, we would love to have them and talk about them. We're getting tips and news stories from our neighbors because, we wanna talk about Tidewater and what's going on around here. It's a value for value show. So if you get any value out of it, then give some value back. You have, yeah, like I said, tips or some art. Try to do a new art piece for every show, but I'm just using AI right now because I have no artistic abilities.
[00:13:28] Co:
Me neither.
[00:13:29] Brodie:
My daughter does, but I can't get her to draw for the show. And or if you had any intro, outro sounds or something, that would be awesome. Or you can do a monetary value back to us, @tidewatertalk.com or email the tips at [email protected]. I wanna talk about my tip, but I got a long story to get to it again.
[00:13:56] Co:
Okay. I'm listening.
[00:13:59] Brodie:
So I don't wanna get too political, but the budget came out this week for Virginia Beach.
[00:14:06] Co:
Mhmm.
[00:14:07] Brodie:
And they didn't they increased the meals tax, brought back the boat tax, and brought this and increased the stormwater rate tax. And I know that my home assessment tax always goes up every year, so I'm always paying more homeowners tax. And I'm like, what are we spending on? And don't get me wrong. I don't wanna get too political, so I wanna make sure that I'm on the other side too that I love a lot a lot of things about Virginia Beach that cost a lot in taxes. Like, I love the boardwalk. The parks are amazing. Mhmm. The aquarium's great. I've talked to a lot of the police, and they are they've always been amazing people.
Some of the emergency responders I've talked to have been great. So and then but now I'm seeing things like the dome and the wave garden. And I don't know if you've driven by Mount Trashmore lately, but there's new slides that go down this down the mountain. It looks cool, but my account is that what it why they're increasing taxes when they just had, like, $42,000,000, windfall in or extra money last year, but they still need to increase taxes. So when does the public get to talk about this stuff? Right? So I went and did some sleuthing through the Virginia Beach government site and ended up in the mayor's office, his site, and saw this thing about his committee for persons with disabilities.
I'm like, well, I got a disabled kid, so I wonder what that's about. And there's this funny part on there that says that, Ober Oberndorf Central Library loans materials to people with disabilities, including books in large print or braille and audio cassettes, as well as playback equipment for audio cassettes. I'm like, really? We're spending money on audio cassette. Well, when's the last time you updated this? Right. He was the submitter was voted in in 2018. No. I wouldn't have no audio cassette in in 2018. So I'm like, what is this for real? It can't be these cassette tapes from for the from the eighties. Right? Right.
So I went and I'm like, I'm just gonna ask for one of these because it says they'll mail them to you. So I'm like, I'm gonna ask for one. So I go to fill out a form to ask for audio cassette books, and it says, if you have if you're having a hard time filling out this form, then you can ask for assistance by filling out this form. What? What is going on here? Like, this can't even be real. So, actually, me and my boy took a field trip today. I'm like, I'm just gonna be part of this committee then. Mhmm. Right? I'm gonna go be part of the what I call it, the, committee for persons with disabilities.
So we went down to the mayor's office today with this with the application to be on the committee, and they had no clue what this was about. We went to the front desk, and they're like, you wanna do what? Like, I wanna go to the mayor's office because it says on this application to return it to the mayor's office. He's like, just a minute. He, like, makes this call. He's like, yeah. They they said they need to come to the Mayor's Office. I don't know. He's like, okay. I'm gonna send you upstairs. Go to Floor 2 and take a left and go through these glass doors. So me and my boy were you know, I'm in a t shirt and jeans, and he's in sweatpants, and I'm just pushing him through the through the Capitol Building and get to the right office. And there's all these people with you know, I didn't realize how big of a I don't know. I guess Virginia Beach is pretty big, but I didn't realize how big of a deal is it Maynard's office was, I guess.
Because there was all these people in suits and ties and the police were all in, like, their dress uniforms.
[00:19:08] Co:
And He was like, I wanna speak to the mayor. Yeah.
[00:19:16] Brodie:
So I we rolled up in there and we're like, I just need to give this to the office of the mayor. This lady's like, what is it? Like, it's a application for the committee for persons with disabilities. She's like, he's in a meeting. I'm like, well, I don't need to talk to him. I just need to give you this application. He's like, oh, I'll get it to his office. I'm like, great. Thanks. So we left and then went to the library. So I'm like, I still gotta figure out what these, cassette tapes are about.
[00:19:59] Co:
You are really digging in. Right. These people at the at the, is it City Hall Yeah. Where the mayor's office is? Right. They were probably like, who is the this guy is crazy. Like, you're in there with jeans going straight to the mayor Yeah. Through the security. That was awesome. You were on a mission.
[00:20:26] Brodie:
Right. And so got to the library, and I'm asking them, do you have cassette tapes with books on them, like, books on tape? And she's like, well, I think so over there at the disabilities resource desk. I'm like, okay. We'll go over there. So go over there. And this lady says, yeah. And she pulls out this. It's actually awesome. So it totally changed my mind that there's this this device with huge buttons. Right? It's got, like, a big green triangle and a big red button to stop and big, like, volume up and down, and they all have braille on them. So it's actually a really cool audio device that they'll loan out to people that can't see or can't read in normal ways.
And the cassettes are actually, they're almost like USB devices, but they're these cartridges. And you plug them in, and they actually have, like, a big handle on them with hole in it so that anybody that, you know, can't handle things very well could be able to push this thing in no matter what. And then it plays and you can control all of it and hear your book no matter what. Right? So now you're not Mhmm. Because you can't read braille on a on a iPad or something. So this is actually a really cool device for people with disabilities. So changed my mind. I went full circle from, like, what in the world is the mayor spending money on tapes
[00:22:20] Co:
for to, like And I'm proud of you for following up because most people would have read that and thought, you know, cassette tapes like like you first thought and Yeah. Just, you know, kinda pushed it to the side and never thought of it again, but you actually went and found them, and they turned out not to be what you thought. That's cool. Yeah. It was fun. That's very cool. It was neat. We had a good time.
[00:22:45] Brodie:
So that's my Tidewater tip for the day is that you can get if you have disabilities, you can get this really cool device, and they'll mail it out to you. I asked her about the forms because that's still I was like, what? Follow-up. Why do I need to fill out another form to have you help me fill out the first form? She's like, oh, yeah. That's worded really badly. We'll help you fill it out no matter what. If you wanna call or email or anything, we'll get you hooked up. So pretty cool.
[00:23:23] Co:
I saw this in the news today, and I just wanted to bring it up because I think it's important for, folks to know. [00:24:59] Co:
the Virginia Beach anime festival or anime fest will be at the Crowne Plaza Beach or excuse me, Crowne Plaza Virginia Beach Town Center. And that is on Saturday, April 5 from ten to five, ten AM to 5PM. And there's going to be a digital art portfolio workshop, and that is at Dart Center at 740 Bausch Street in Norfolk. And that's on, the April 5, also Saturday. But it goes through the twenty sixth, so I guess it's a entire workshop. I might need to sign up for that.
[00:25:39] Brodie:
Yeah. I gotta get my daughter signed up for that. She's got so much awesome digital art, but how do you make a portfolio out of that?
[00:25:48] Co:
Yeah.
