[00:04:49] Unknown:
And you know something folks, whenever and wherever you find yourself listening to us, it's always, always my prayer that you also find yourself in the grace and in the mercy of our Lord and savior, the Lord Jesus Christ. Welcome to the Joe Rooz show. And folks, you know, we are, of course, as always, transmitting to you live from the asylum studios, from the pimple on the backside of Texas, the beautiful city of Eagle Pass. And you know what, it's a beautiful Sunday. It truly is. It's a beautiful, beautiful Sunday afternoon here in Eagle Pass. It's wet, overcast, rainy.
We had some, thunderstorm a little earlier. I wanna say thunderstorm. We had some thunder a little earlier, and that was always that's always nice. I like that. Every every, you know, every time the thunder cracks, you know, I I tend to look up, you know, because, you know, the Bible says that, you know, lift up your head for your redemption draweth nigh. So I'm always looking to see where the thunder's coming from. This way, I know where to look. I keep my head up there. Keep looking. Keep looking. Keep looking. Well, folks, I hope you guys had a great week. I hope you enjoyed your Saturday, especially. We didn't do any shows on Saturday, so you weren't tortured with me on Saturday.
But, I hope you guys had a good weekend. I hope it was a good weekend all around for everybody, and everybody got some stuff done. We got, got a few things taken care of yesterday. We had a we had a really good conference call and, took care of some of the business of the show. You know, there is a business side to the show. We took care of some of that yesterday. And, it looks good. Looks good. I can't really talk about too too much because, you know, everything is still kind of in the works. But, once once we can, we will. We'll let you guys know all the juicy details and how things are developing here at the Joe Russo.
Also, you know, we got a full week coming up. It's gonna be, it's gonna be a busy week. We got a we got a full slate of guests. Got a we got a really good show for you tomorrow. Looking forward to this one. Gonna have some great conversation, and, I'm excited about that. And, you know, we got a lot of got a good things going on. Oh, we also played with the new studio yesterday. We were gonna run it today, but, we didn't do it only because, there seems to be a little bit of a limitation with the amount of, clips and, and, graphics that I could use. And, it kinda limits you to, like, 10 or or so. And I have for us today, since it's our Bible study show where is it? I have I have twenty three twenty three images or graphics to show you for the show today, and, couldn't load that up in into the other platform. So, I guess, you know, we won't be using that one for the Bible study show at least as long as we have that many, passages, scriptures that we're gonna look at. So we'll just, you know, we'll continue using the rumble studio.
And as I see the looking at the monitor right now, it's beautiful, crystal clear, sharp quality as always with the rumble studio. The pixelating, the color blobs, beautiful. Absolutely beautiful. I'm hoping that the other studio is better with this. It was. I mean, we we ran it out yesterday. It was it was pretty good. Did a test show, but I'm just aggravated with this thing to to no extent. But you know what? That's okay because we're not here for that. We're here for the word of God today. Now, last week, we had a, we began a a short series on the book of Proverbs talking about wisdom. You know, we we talked about what is wisdom? Where can I get wisdom?
Why do I need do I need wisdom? Why do I need wisdom? You know, and and you could ask a million questions about that. Tonight, what we're gonna do is we're gonna get a little bit deeper. It's right up there on your screen. Ezrahealing.com. Alright. Well, let's take our Bibles and let's get over that way to, the book of Proverbs and chapter one. Proverbs in chapter one. Just go to the middle of your Bible, you'll find the book of Psalms, then go one book over to your right, and you'll find the book of Proverbs. Proverbs chapter one. And like I said, you know, last week, we we began a series of lessons from the book of Proverbs, and of course, that's gonna, you know, cross reference with other passages, but, besides Proverbs, but, and it's gonna we can do that tonight. We're gonna bounce a few places tonight, just till you get the full picture of everything that we're gonna be talking about. But the, the basic idea and the and the basic concept of these lessons, these life related lessons are all initiated in Proverbs. All initiated in Proverbs. Alright? Now, Proverbs chapter one and verse one.
Proverbs chapter one and verse number one. Let's get back over here. There we go. The Proverbs of Solomon, the son of David, king of Israel, to know wisdom and instruction, to perceive the words of understanding. Now last week, we talked a great deal about wisdom. You know, where do you get it? How do you get it? Why do you need it? Right? We talked about all of that last week. Verse three, to receive the instruction of wisdom, justice, judgment, and equity, to give subtlety to the young man, knowledge, and discretion. To give subtlety to the simple, to the young man, knowledge, and discretion. A wise man will hear and will increase learning. A man of understanding shall attain unto wise counsels.
To understand a proverb and the interpretation, the words of the wise and their dark sayings, the fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom, but fools despise wisdom and instruction. Our heavenly father, we wanna thank you for the day you've given us. Lord, we thank you for your book. Lord, we thank you for the words of wisdom that you have you have here for us. Lord, help us to study these and apply them to our daily life. In Jesus' name. Amen. Alright. Now so the fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge. And, of course, you know, we can cross reference that to to other passages that say the fear of the Lord is beginning of wisdom, and and and so wisdom and knowledge are grouped together. Alright? They're they're basically twin sisters.
One needs the other. You know, you need some knowledge to gain wisdom, and I used the example last week. I said, I said, knowledge is knowing that a tomato is a fruit. Wisdom is knowing not to put it in a fruit salad. Alright? You need some knowledge to gain wisdom. Alright? Now the the fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge and wisdom. Well, now you might expect that, since since the fear of the Lord is the beginning, you know, actually, keep your finger here in Proverbs chapter one, but, flip over to, Psalm one eleven. Psalm one just go back a couple of pages to your left. The book of Psalms to Psalm one eleven, and we're gonna go to verse number 10. Psalm one eleven and verse number 10.
The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom. A good understanding have all they that do his commandments. His praise endureth forever. Now you might understand that, you know, if the fear of the Lord is the beginning, then it would be natural that fear would be under attack. And it is. In a in a in a lot of the new Bibles and a lot of the commentaries that I've consulted, you know, some of them just really can't stand the idea that that that God should or could be feared. And so what they do is they they they they they they they change it. And they're very quick to change it without any edit without any manuscript evidence to back it up. They'll change it.
They change it. And the usual change is they make it godly reverence or or or something similar to that. But but your Bible says over and over and over again that the fear of the Lord is a healthy thing. The fear of the Lord is a healthy thing. Alright? Now, people have fears. Right? People have fears. So tonight, like I indicated earlier, tonight's lesson is gonna be dealing with fear. The negatives, the positives of dealing with fear. Okay? Fear. People are afraid. But what are people afraid of? People are afraid of losing their health. People are afraid of losing their wealth. They're afraid of losing their loved ones.
You know? A lot of people are just afraid of life itself. You know? It's just it's just scary. It's, you know, everything about life can be scary. Well, dealing with fear. Are there any reasons are there any reasons that a New Testament Christian should fear? Are there any reasons? Now some people say no. Some people say no, that that a New Testament Christian shouldn't fear. They should have no fear about anything. Well, you're wrong. You're wrong. Look at me over in Philippians in chapter two. Philippians chapter two, your New Testament. Gonna go all the way over there. Gonna get into the, gonna pass the gospels. You're gonna pass the book of Acts, Romans, first Corinthians, second Corinthians, and then you're gonna go to Galatians, Ephesians, and then Philippians.
Okay? You know, I I tell you where the books are like that, you know, not not so much for you, but for me too. You know? Philippians Philippians chapter two. Now Philippians chapter so what what I'm gonna do tonight, what I'm gonna try well, what I'm gonna attempt to show you tonight is things you should fear, and things you shouldn't fear. Alright? Now Philippians chapter two, and, verse number 12. Philippians two verse 12. Wherefore, my beloved, as you have always obeyed, not as in my presence only, but now much more in my absence. Well, now wait a minute.
Hold on a second here. This must be a pretty good bunch. You know, this isn't like the Corinthians. You know, they were just they were just a bunch of screw balls. You know, they had a lot of problems over there in Corinth. Do you remember what you remember what I'm talking about? I mean, you know, in over in first I'm a try to think how to phrase it. In first Corinthians in second Corinthians, you know, Paul is just really trying to straight that straighten that crowd out. You know, they had a lot of a lot of doctrinal issues going on in that church. You know, you know, they're they're they're and they're not like the Galatians who went doctrinally south for a while. The Philippians were a good bunch.
I said I said doctrinal issues for Corinthians. Now it was more of moral issues for the Corinthian church, but, Galatians, you know, their doc they went doctrinally south, but, like I said, the Philippians are a pretty good bunch. They were pretty solid. He said they always obeyed whether Paul was there or he wasn't there. So, you know, that's an obedient bunch. That's an obedient bunch to the lords. And then he says this, he says he says this, work out your own salvation. What? With what? Fear and trembling. So the trembling just accents the idea of fear. Now he's not suggesting that we should we should, you know, run out a whole commentary on that, and we're not gonna do that. But, he's not suggesting that salvation is a process of works.
Alright? That's not what he's suggesting. What he's suggesting here is, if you have salvation, work it out. Work it out. You know, think of it like this. People say, well, I'm gonna go to the gym to do what? What do you go to the gym to do? You go to the gym to work out. Right? Now you've already got the body, you're just trying to add a little muscle to it. You're trying to tone it up. You see? So it's that kind of a workout. So he says, work it out with fear and trembling. Now I wonder why Paul connects fear and trembling to salvation.
Well, he does. He does. Common sense says that there there are some things that should be feared and therefore treated accordingly by making necessary provisions. Now, you know, for all the folks for all of us that were born and raised in this country, and, you know, maybe you're from maybe you're from Tennessee, maybe you're from Texas, maybe you're or or or or somewhere similar, from from the time you were a child, you were probably taught, or you should have been taught anyway, don't put your hand where you can't see it. Amen? You understand?
Don't put your hand where you can't see it. Well, think about it. Why? Well, you put your hand in a in a hole, you put your hand, you know, on under the porch, you can't see, you might get snake bit. You see? So you never know what's hiding where you can't see your hand. Right? And of course, there are spiders. I hate spiders. I don't like spiders. Alright? I don't have a deathly fear of spiders like a lot of people do. I just don't like them. They're creepy. But do you think it's wise that we should fear some things? You know, isn't that just common?
Well, see, what we've done is is we take for granted God, and and and somehow we get to thinking, well, you know, I'm a New Testament Christian, and he's eliminated all necessity of fear. Now there's some things, you know, there's some things that you fear. Why? Because God is a balanced God. He's a balanced God. Well, how do you deal with fear? How do you deal with it? Well, that's the question. Alright. Well, number one number one is you embrace it. Embrace it to the extent that you learn something, that God, you know you know, God isn't gonna change the time law the the the timeless laws of spirit of the spiritual universe just because you're one of his children.
Alright? You need to understand that. He is not gonna do that. Alright? For example, let me alright. Let me give you an example. Do you know you know what you should fear? Do you know what you should fear? You should fear the consequences of sin. That's what you should fear. The consequences of sin. Go with me to Galatians chapter six. Galatians chapter six. You're in Philip you're in Ephesians. Right? Or Philippians we were in. You're gonna go back Ephesians to Galatians. Galatians in chapter six. Galatians chapter six, and we're gonna get to probably, I think, first probably verse six or seven or so. But every believer ought to fear the consequences of sin because because Galatians chapter six is dedicated to believers.
Alright? There's no unbelievers in this reference. There's none. This is all to the believer. Alright? Let's look at verse seven. Actually, I was I was wrong. Verse seven. Galatians six verse seven. Be not deceived. God is not mocked. For whatsoever a man soweth, that shall he also reap. For he that soweth to his flesh shall of the flesh reap corruption, and he that soweth to the spirit and he he that soweth to the spirit shall of the spirit reap everlasting life. Alright? So sowing and reaping. Sowing and reaping. It's a universal law. You sow it, and sooner or later, reaping day comes. Harvest day comes. You see? So what are you gonna harvest?
Are you gonna harvest good, or are you gonna harvest bad? Now some people try to just, you know, only put that into a negative connotation, you know, or they put a negative connotation on that verse, which is which is a mistake. Alright? It's faulty. And let me tell you why. You sow bad things, you're gonna reap bad things. But if you sow good things, you're gonna reap good things. Isn't that right? Doesn't that make sense? I mean, so so so the idea is, you know, you know, Jesus told a parable about the tares out in the middle of the wheat field. Do you remember that one? And the disciples said, well, why why can't we just go out there and just just pick them up and burn them? And he said, no. Because you'll tear up the wheat tares also. Oh, the wheat also. I'm sorry. I said tares. I shouldn't have said tares.
Because the tare and the wheat are two different things. Alright? So the idea of that whole thing is is that you sow as much wheat as you can. Sow as much sow as much good as you can. Sow as much positive as you can to kinda overshadow and overrule the negatives that you've sown in your life. You know, some people fear the skeletons in the closet. You know what the best way to deal with the skeleton in the closet? Especially your closet? You sew as much good as you can to cover up the skeletons. You know? It's like that. It's just like that. It's just that simple.
It is that simple. Alright? So we should fear the consequences of sin. You know what? We should fear the consequences of foolish behavior. We should fear the consequences of foolish behavior. Go back with me to Proverbs and chapter one. Back to the middle of your Bible, Job, Psalms, Proverbs Proverbs chapter one, and right. Yeah. Proverbs chapter one. Now last week, we discovered, you know, second only to the Lord Jesus Christ, Solomon is said to have been the wisest man that ever lived. This guy was absolutely no dummy. None would not not in the slightest.
He was the sharpest tack in any box. Okay? So, and and we learn we learn a lot from from his Proverbs. Alright? Now in verse seven, once again, verse seven, Proverbs one verse seven, the fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge, but fools despise wisdom and instruction. Alright. So wisdom is set against fools as a as a diamond set against the garbage pail. You know? So don't be a fool. Avoid foolish behavior. Alright? That's one way to deal with fear. Fear, you know, pretty often comes because of foolish things that we've done, and you know that. We all know that. See, we've done foolish things. We've all done foolish things.
And now all of a sudden, we're reaping the fear that comes as a result of those foolish things. So avoid foolish behavior. Alright? This this isn't really something I want to camp on, although, you know, it's important. It's worthy of it. But, but really quick. Really, really quick. What do fools do? What do fools do? Now there's a there's a long list there's a long list, but here's the problem with teaching this lesson and dealing with fear. Alright. And I struggled with this. I did. When I putting this together, I struggled with this thing, and and and and here's why. It's not for lack of material. Alright? It's not for the lack of material. It's it's it's because there's too much.
There's too much material. I mean I mean, the word fear, but in and of itself appears hundreds of times in your Bible, in all kinds of contexts. All kinds of contexts. So so I'm going through and I'm trying to isolate, you know, different things, you know, that that are that are relevant and germane primarily to the believer. But I can give you a good one right now. It's called hell. It's called hell. There's a good reason for an unbeliever to fear. It's called hell. Now some people say, well, I got saved because I was overwhelmed with the love of Christ, and I say, good for you. Good for you. That's great.
I'm glad that it hits you that way. I'm glad that it does. I I I you know, I'm just a hard headed Sicilian. I got saved because a preacher preached a hot scathing message on hell, And that message literally scared the hell out of me. I mean, literally. You know? I said, woah, hold on a second here. I don't wanna go to hell. I don't wanna go to hell. And I could see that there was this this, there was a distinct looming possibility of that very thing happening because that preacher, through the word of God, convinced me that I was a sinner, and all of sin to come come short of the glory of God, and the wages of sin is death.
And then he laid that thing out step by step perfectly. And I said, boy, you know what? No. I I I can identify with with what Paul said, you know, little different context, but it resulted in fear and trembling. Fear and trembling. Alright? So what do fools do? Well, number one, they despise wisdom. And, in our text, right here in verse seven, but fools despise wisdom and and instruction. Fools despise wisdom and instruction. So so fools have no regard. Fools have no regard for wisdom at all. At all. But, you know, that's not all. Let's go over to, Proverbs chapter 14.
Proverbs chapter 14. Alright. Let's let's quickly run through this list here because we got much, much more ground to cover. Alright. In, they despise wisdom. And in in in verse 14 of and and in chapter 14 and verse nine, he says, fools make a mock at sin. Alright? Fools laugh at sin. Fools ridicule sin. They ridicule the very idea of sin, and sin will hurt you. Sin will hurt you. It does, and it will. It does, and it will. And fools ridicule that idea. They say, nothing's gonna happen to me. But folks, sin is sin. Sin is sin. Sin will hurt you.
I guarantee it. There's no question about it. There are people all over that sin is robbing them of the very lifeblood that they have. Sin is robbing them from the from the from from from breath, from decency, from good conscience. Sin is stealing them. Sin is stealing it from them, but fools make a mock at sin. Fools make a mock at sin. That's not all. Chapter 10. Proverbs chapter 10. Just a couple of pages over. Proverbs chapter 10. And, you know, I didn't necessarily put these in any, like, chronological order or anything like that, but it doesn't matter. It doesn't matter at all.
Alright. Proverbs chapter 10 and, verse number 18. Proverbs 10 and verse 18. He that hideth hatred with lying lips, and he that uttereth a slander, is a fool, is a fool. You know what fools do? They slander other people. And if you want a good dose of that, just turn on the news. You know, ABC, NBC, MSNBC, or MS Now, whatever it is, CNN, they all spend about 90% of the time slandering Donald Trump or conservatives in general. You know what they are? And and and the definition in the definition and in the light of God's word, they're fools. They're fools. That's exactly what they are. Now now I didn't say it.
Alright? God said it. You see? Do you understand? I did not the one who said who's calling them fools. God is. God calls them fools. Alright? That's not all. Chapter 20. Proverbs chapter 20. Proverbs chapter 20, and we're gonna go to verse three. Proverbs 20 and verse three. Don't be a fool. Don't be a fool. Fools end up in a great depository of fear. You see? If you're not a fool, there's a whole lot less reason to be afraid. If you're not a fool, there's a whole lot less reason to fear. It it's it's it's so simple. It it really it's just really, really simple. Chapter 20 verse three. It is an honor for a man to cease from strife, but every fool will be meddling.
Every fool will be meddling. Now meddling in the context has to do with meddling in other people's business. Alright? Don't be a meddler. Don't be a meddler. Fool's medal. That's that's what they do. They always have their nose in somebody else's business. You know, I adopted an attitude years ago in when I was act more active in the ministry, which I I think has helped kind of preserve me, this long, and and and that's this. And and I'll say this and I'll say it in a in a in a context, and and and I'm gonna try to qualify it in a way that you'll understand. The less I know about your personal life, the less I know about your personal business, the better I like it.
Okay? You follow me? Do you understand? I mean, I have known preachers that that feel like they have to micromanage everybody's life in their church. I don't like that. I don't like that. I mean, look, if you have a crisis, if you have a situation that you need some advice, or you need some help on, I look, I'm glad to help. I'm glad to do it. I'm glad to to lend whatever help I can. That's that's a whole other issue. That's in the ballgame altogether. Completely different story. It's just one of those, you know, those those strange things. Meddling in other people's business.
You know who does that? Fools. Fools do it. You see? Alright. Here's another one, chapter 17. Proverbs chapter 17, couple pages over. Proverbs 17 and, verse number 10. A reproof entereth more into a wise man than a 100 stripes into a fool. Alright. You know what a fool does according to that verse? You know what a fool does? He resists punishment for correction. He resists punishment for correction. You know, here's the way it comes out a lot of times. Well, you know what? I really don't deserve this. I don't deserve this. Really?
Maybe you deserve a lot more. You know, a whole lot more, man. You know? Now, did did did some of you grow up in old school homes, and and and and did dad ever take the belt after you? I mean, my friend my, my friend that lived next door to me, you know, gave me a little tip about that one time. He said and and we were just little kids, you know, we were just, you know, we weren't really very old at this point. He said, when you're gonna take a lick, the best thing to do is grab hold of your mom or dad's leg and hold on tight. I say, why is that?
He said, because they don't wanna hit themselves. You know? And it's true. It's true. I tried it. I tried it. But you know you know, the the Lord whips his kids sometimes. The Lord whips his kids sometimes. You know why? Because he loves them. Because he loves them. Go to Hebrews chapter 12. Hebrews chapter 12, New Testament. You know, it's the last book of, Paul's epistles. And go ahead. Challenge me on that one. You know? People say that we don't know who wrote who who wrote Hebrews. I am pretty convinced that it's Paul. Alright. Hebrews chapter 12.
When the Lord determines that it's time for you to get a weapon, you know, the best thing is just grab on tight. Grab on tight. Don't run away like the prodigal son did. Get as close to God as you can. Now the Lord isn't gonna hurt himself. Alright? You know that. You understand that. You get the idea. Alright? Now, verse five of chapter 12. Verse five of chapter 12. Let me put it up here for you guys if you don't have your Bible with you. Hebrews 12 verse five. And you have forgotten the exhortation which speaketh unto you as, as unto children. My son, despise not thou the chastening of the Lord, nor faint when thou art rebuked of him.
For whom the Lord loveth, he chasteneth and scourgeth every son whom he receiveth. If ye endure chastening, God dealeth with you as sons. For what son is he whom the father chasteneth not? Sometimes, the Lord whips us. You know why? Not because he doesn't love us, not because he detests us or hates us, dislikes us, but because he loves us. Because he loves us. Now fools resist the punishment for correction. Alright. Let's go back to Proverbs. Proverbs chapter 28. Proverbs chapter 28. So I'm I'm gonna I'm gonna wrap up this part of it at least, and then we'll move on.
But Proverbs chapter 28. Now now the verse that we're gonna read flies in the face of all wiz all the wisdom of the world. Just flies it is diametrically opposed to what you've been hearing all your life. Alright? And here it is. Proverbs chapter 28 and, where is it? Proverbs chapter 28 and verse 26. He that trusteth in his own heart is a fool. Is a fool. Don't trust your heart. Don't trust your heart. You say, well, why can't I trust my heart? Because your heart is wicked. Jeremiah said that, didn't he? The heart is deceitful and desperately wicked. Who can know it? Now, you know, if you ever really stop and think about it, you know, even just for a little bit, Because your heart will tell you, you know, one thing one day, and it'll tell you something else the next day. You know, you're basically your heart's on a roller coaster.
Isn't that right? I mean, it it it'll go wrong. It'll go wrong, you know? It it it'll end up taking you all over the place. You'll you'll all over the map. You'd you know, don't trust your heart with them. Don't trust your heart. Well, if I can't trust my heart, what can I trust? The authoritative word of God. That's what you can trust. The words of God don't vacillate. The words of God don't change. They're not maneuverable. They're steady. You see? So, so a fool a fool trusts his heart. Alright? Now what are things that we fear? Right. What are things that we fear?
Well, there are a lot of things that we fear. You know, just naturally, there's a lot of things. And what I'm gonna try to do is is is show you why we don't need to fear them. Alright? Well, here's the biggie. You know? And it's just natural, You know? What the human race fears, it's death. Death. So what do we do as human beings? We we make all kinds of maneuvers, make all kinds of plans to avoid it as long as possible. You know, I went to my doctor, and, you know you know, they they look at you, they listen to your heart, you know, they they they look in your ear, your mouth, your, you know, up your nose, and and so then then he turns around, he looks at his computer, and, goes well, you know, you know, we have this formula considering your blood pressure, your age, and your medication, and they, you know, they put all this stuff together and this formula and this computer, and then this computer says, well, you know, your cholesterol level says that you have a twenty one percent chance of a stroke and or a heart attack. So do you wanna take cholesterol medication?
I said, no. He said, why not? Oh, because I got I figured I got a seventy nine percent chance of not having one. Right? There's twenty one I got seventy nine percent chance of not having one. So he looked at me, he goes, well, I guess that's a good way to look at it. I mean, all I'm doing is playing the odds. Right? That's all I'm doing is just playing the odds. But, you know, you could take this pill and that pill and and the other pill, you know, and, you know, I'm I'm sure there are some pills that are necessary. I'm not gonna deny that, but, I mean, you know, a a lot of that stuff, you know, and we're just jumping through the hoops to do everything we can to avoid death.
Are we not? Everything we can do to avoid death. Go with me to John chapter 11. Gospel of John chapter 11. Forty fourth book of your Bible. Matthew, Mark, Luke, John. John chapter 11. Now in John 11, great story, great story. Jesus has a friend named Lazarus, and Lazarus died. And at this point, he's been dead for four days. And and he arrives at the home, of Mary and Martha and Lazarus, and and and Mary and Martha were Lazarus' sisters, of course. And in John 11 and verse 24. John 11 verse 24. Martha said unto him, I know that he shall rise again in the resurrection at the last day.
Jesus said unto her, I am the resurrection and the life. He that believeth in me, though he were dead, yet shall he live. And whosoever liveth and believeth in me shall never die. Believeth believest thou this? She said unto him, yea, Lord, I believe that thou art the Christ, the son of God, which should come into the world. Now that's a good confession. That's a good confession, Martha. Good. It's good for you. Good for you. Now the Orthodox Jews believed in the resurrection of the dead. Alright? And you could find that over in Acts chapter 23 verse six, but none of them believe that there could be a resurrection from the dead.
Okay? Did you catch the difference? They they believed in a resurrection of the dead, but none of them believed there could be a resurrection from the dead. You see, they believed that, that one day, after everybody's dead, there would be this universal resurrection. That's what they believed. Right? But but she just couldn't come along, just couldn't couldn't come along at a gravesite and say to this say to the guy, arise Lazarus. Except Jesus did. Jesus did. Alright? Now so so so folks, you know, they get nervous, and they get concerned about death because, you know, they don't understand that Jesus has the ability to raise you from the dead.
Now this whole passage, if you study it, I mean, carefully, like, really carefully, if you study it minutely, the whole passage is a picture of the rapture. It's a picture of the rapture. Look down in verse 28. Look down in verse number 28. John eleven twenty eight. And when she had said so, she went her way and called Mary her sister secretly saying, the master has come and calleth for thee. Man, that's rapture stuff. Isn't the rapture a secret? You know, we're not talking about the second advent when Jesus descends from heaven and he appears before, you know, before the whole world and he establishes the king his kingdom, you know, right after the battle of Armageddon. That's not what we're talking about. We're not talking about the second advent. We're talking about something that takes place seven years previous to that, the rapture of the church.
When the trumpet blows, you find that over in Revelation chapter four verse one, the trumpet blows, the voice of the archangel is sounded, and all the believers hear it, and then you disappear in a second, just a like a nanosecond, not even a second, less than a second. The Bible says a twinkling of an eye, and poof, you're gone. You're gone. And you meet the Lord in the air. It's a secret thing. It's a secret rapture. And so it's no, you know, it's it's no coincidence that the Lord inserted the word secretly in the passage in verse 28 saying, the master has come and calleth for thee.
That's far out, man. That's far out. Alright? So so the so at the rapture, you're gonna be resurrected as a believer from the dead. Alright? Now John chapter 14. Go to John chapter 14. Let's go just a little bit further. John chapter 14, people fear death. People fear death. Now I like what Billy Graham said, and he said this not not too long before he died. He said, I don't fear death, I fear the process of getting there. I get that. I get that. I understand that completely. But here you go, John 14 and verse number one. John chapter 14 and verse number one. Let not your heart be troubled.
Well, a troubled heart is a fearful heart, isn't it? That's what a troubled heart is. It speaks of fear. Let not your heart be troubled. You believe in God, believe also in me. In my father's house are many mansions. If it were not so, I would have told you. I go to prepare a place for you. And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again and receive you unto myself, that where I am, there ye may be also. Jesus said it. Jesus said it. Now either that's exactly what's transpiring, or or or Jesus is a great big liar, and I'm not gonna be the one to call on that.
You know, sometimes you come across, you know, older believers and, you know you know you know, 90. And, a frequent comment that you hear from folks like that is, you know, I I just don't know why the Lord's left me here so long. I I I know plenty of believers that have said that in that age range, But here's a good answer to give him. I don't know why the Lord left me here yet. Here's the answer you give him. God isn't done building your house yet. And if he's created if and if he created the earth in six days and he's been working in your house, you know, how long have you been saved? Like, seventy four years.
Well, that must be quite a house. It's quite a house. I mean, this thing's gonna be built with the perfection that that would just absolutely boggle your imagination. Can you imagine? I can't. Frank, I I honestly I can't. So people fear death. People fear death. But, that's not all. That's not all. What else? They fear sickness. They fear sickness. And, you know, understandably, I mean, who wants to be sick? I understand that. I get that. I mean, anybody in their right mind doesn't prefer illness. You know? They don't prefer maladies or infirmities and all that stuff that that goes along with it. Now as as strange it is as it is, there there there is some comfort in realizing that our bodies are under a curse.
So so it provides a certain explanation for sickness. However, there is a preventative cure to some degree. It's not a cure all, but there's a preventative thing that that that God has in place. Now, you know I mean, look. Let's face it. Let's face it. People are into preventatives. Right? We all are. I mean, look. Why do we take vitamins? You know, why do I drink methylene blue? You know, why do I take supplements? Why do I you know, why do you do it? You know, health food stores are are are are a booming business. Supplements are a booming business.
You know, we don't like to call it preventative maintenance, you know, or preventatives. We know we call it maintenance. You you know what I mean? Just little maintenance along the way, along the road here. But but all of the maintenance things that we utilize, preventatives, you know, whatever you like to call them, whatever you wanna refer to them as. It's amazing though how many believers or how few believers consult the word of God for his preventatives. Do you know do you know where they are? Do you know what they are? Could you find them? Could could you could you lay your finger on them?
I'm gonna show you one. Alright? Proverbs. Go back to Proverbs chapter three. Proverbs in chapter three, my friends. Proverbs in chapter three. Proverbs chapter three. Let's see. Okay. Proverbs and chapter number three, and we're gonna go to verse seven. Be not wise in thine own eyes. Fear the Lord and depart from evil. Alright? So departing from evil is a good thing, and and why? Next verse. And it shall be health to thy navel and marrow to thy bones. God says there's good health connected and associated with departing from evil. Verse nine, honor the Lord with thy substance and with the first fruits of all thine increase, so shall thy barns be filled with plenty, and thy presses burst out with new wine. So in other words, don't be stingy with God.
Don't be stingy with God. Stinginess does not produce good health. Don't be stingy with God. Be faithful with the Lord, with your substance, and what he gives you. Now some people say, well, you know, that, you know, that that, you know, you're just you know, that preacher is just talking about tithing. I'm not. I'm not talking about tithing at all. We talked about tithing at today at church, actually. You know, I I I'm I'm talking about exceeding the tithe. That's what I'm talking about. You know? Don't be stingy with God. I mean, it's it's it's a it really is. It's a good preventative for a lot of things.
Now, you know, Paul Paul calls our body what? He says our bodies are corruptible over in first Corinthians chapter 15. You know, sickness is going to come sometimes. It's gonna happen. Look to me over in second Timothy, your New Testament. Let's go back to the New Testament. Gonna go past Ephesians, Philippians, Thessalonians, and you're gonna get to what did I say? First Timothy or second? Second Timothy. Second Timothy and chapter four. Alright? Now we fear it, and we have every reasonable right to do so. That's not what we're questioning. We're not questioning that. Alright? We we pray for those that are afflicted. We're concerned about those that have physical disabilities and physical difficulties.
You know, the apostle Paul was used to the Lord to cure a lot of people. He cured a lot of folks. He even raised some some people from the dead. So, you know, that's what I call great apostolic power. Now now this is a dispensational lesson that we're that we're not really gonna linger with, but by the time Paul got to the end of his ministry, he couldn't heal anybody. You realize that? That that that that gift was gone. The apostolic signs were done with. You see, God gave apostolic signs in Mark chapter 16 and and stuff in the book of Acts for one reason. For one reason, to persuade the Jewish community of the validity of the gospel.
Why? Because the Jews seeks after a sign. Alright? So so he gave them every single opportunity he could. So by the time we get over here to second Timothy chapter four, and look what he says here in, in verse 20. Second Timothy four and verse 20. Erastus abode at Corinth, but Trophimus have I left at Miletum sick. What are you talking about, Paul? Well, Trophimus was a fellow traveler. He was an evangelist. He He was a great helper with you, and you left him at my lead him sick. Paul, the great apostle, the great healer, and you left him behind because he was sick?
Why didn't you just, you know, hover over him and sprinkle a little oil on him and say some some magic words and raise him up? All gone. All gone. Trophimus have I left at Miletum sick. And do you remember what he told Timothy? He told Timothy, take a little wine for thy stomach's sake, and I'd often infirmities. Now of course, you know, that's the one that's the one verse that every drunk in town knows. Right? They all know that verse. They say, man, that's good preaching. Right? Amen. Right? Preach. That's good. Well, in other words, that's the best that Paul can do.
So right there, that's an indication that's there. You know you know? People get sick. People get sick, and they do. They do. Now we believe in praying for folks. God heals some, he doesn't heal others. And that's, you know, the reason for that is the reason for that is is is, you know, we live in a corruptible body. We live in a corruptible body. Now what else what else do people fear? What else do people fear? You know what else people fear? They fear poverty. Poverty. Go with me to Philippians in chapter four. Philippians chapter four. You're in Titus. Gonna go back to your left.
Galatians, Ephesians, Philippians. Philippians chapter four. Where are we on time? Okay. Philippians chapter four, and we're gonna look at verse number 19. Philippians chapter four and verse number 19. But my God shall supply all your need according to his riches in glory by Christ Jesus. Now doctor Ruckman has a great note in his bible, in his commentary bible, on that particular verse, and I actually I transcribed it into my own here. And, but but but here's what it says at the bottom of the page. It says here, it says, the promise is that God will supply all your needs, not all your greed.
There's a difference. There's a difference, isn't there? Alright? Every man has four basic needs. One is salvation, two is assurance of salvation, three is wisdom, and four is comfort. Right? That's all you need right there. Salvation, assurance of salvation, wisdom, and comfort. With those things, you'll be able to you'll you'll be able to, make a living, earn money, stay in good health, and go to heaven when he dies. Money and health are not essentials. They're luxuries. They're luxuries. Yeah. Luxuries. Well, to that, I guess I'd say amen. Amen. Alright.
Poverty. Poverty. Well, I found a very interesting illustration on that. During World War two, the Germans forced many 12 and 13 year old boys into, into into signing up for this junior Gestapo or Gestapo. Alright? These boys were were they were treated very harsh. They were given inhumane jobs to perform. And when the war ended, most had lost track of their families and wandered around without food or shelter. And, as part of an aid program in post war Germany, many of these youth were placed in tent cities. And here, doctors and and psychologists worked with the boys in an attempt to restore their mental and physical health.
They found that many of the boys would awaken in the middle of the night screaming in terror. One doctor had an idea for handling that fear. After feeding the boys a large meal, he'd put them to bed with a piece of bread in their hands, which they were told to save until morning, and the boys slept soundly. They slept soundly because after so many years of hunger, they finally had some assurance that they'd have a meal the next day. Folks, god has given you assurance. My god shall supply all your need according to his riches in glory by Christ Jesus.
Do you know what he does every time we pick up this book? Every time we pick up this book, he puts a meal in our hands for the next day. Doesn't he? Doesn't he? Well, then, of course, you know, people fear man. Right? People fear man. Matthew chapter 10. Let's run over there really quick. Matthew chapter 10. Matthew is the first book of your New Testament, fortieth book of your Bible. Matthew in chapter 10. Matthew 12. I'm getting there. I'm getting there. I have a fan over here blowing it. It's blowing the pages as I'm turning them. Matthew chapter 10 and verse number 28.
And fear not them which kill the body, but are not able to kill the soul, but rather fear him, which is able to destroy both soul and body in hell. That's the devil right there. Alright? Don't fear them which can kill the body. Don't fear them which can kill the body. You know, some someone asked me some time ago, they said, you know, sometimes you say some pretty controversial and provocative things on the podcast. Do you ever do you ever fear that someone might, try to harm you? You know, maybe take you out or something like that? I like George Whitfield's attitude on this one. George Whitfield, if you don't know him, was an evangelist back in in the seventeen hundreds, and God used him in in an incredible way, an incredible way.
George said this, he said, I am immortal till God is finished with me. And I guess he was living proof of that, because, one time one time, and I think I mentioned this when we were teaching about the America's Christian heritage, He he was preaching, at one of those, open air meetings, which is like what most of his preaching was, these open air meetings, and and and he was standing up on a wagon, and there were about 10,000 people surrounding, in in in a field listening to him. Now just think about that. Can you imagine? No electronics, no microphones, nothing.
Nothing to amplify your voice. Can you imagine that? And he was able to preach loud enough that they could all hear him. And while he was preaching, a guy jumped up on the back, on jump jumped up back behind him with an old black powder pistol and pointed it to the back of his head and said, if you don't quit preaching, I'm gonna blow your brains out. George Whitfield didn't miss a lick. He didn't he didn't hesitate. He just kept on preaching. The guy said, hey. Maybe you didn't hear me. If you don't quit preaching, I'm gonna blow your brains out. And he just kept preaching.
He just kept preaching. And then the guy pulled this the guy squeezed the trigger, and the gun blew up backwards. It backfired. And all it did was singe George's hair. And he turned around and he pointed at that guy that was that was he would and he was he was wailing around on the ground, a bloody mess, and he said, you see that right there? That guy is on the cornerstone of hell. Don't you go. Good grief. Could you imagine that? And a whole bunch of people got saved. A whole bunch of people got saved. You know what Proverbs 29 says? You don't have to go there, right now, but it says this, in in the the the fear of man is a snare.
The fear of man is a snare. In other words, it'll trap you. It'll catch you. Now you know what's wrong with Washington DC? You know what's wrong with DC today? Fear of man. Fear of man. Now when this country was initiated way back in colonial days, and again, we just covered all this stuff, and prior even prior to that, the whole thing was predicated not on the fear of man, but the fear of God. When the Mayflower came to this country, emblazoned on their main sail, it said, in God we trust. On the main sail, there was no question about which god they were referring to.
There was no it wasn't Allah. It wasn't any other god of the pagans. It was the god of the Bible. Now when our forefathers began to collect writings and intellectual material and things, that they were they were fashion our country together with, the constitution, the declaration of independence, you know, all the other writings that have been accumulated over the years that that that that they they fashioned and and and put together, you know, the Federalist Papers, the Anti Federalist Papers, and and all the rest of it. There were two university professors some years ago.
One of them, name was Lutz, and I I forgot the other guy's name, but but but they did a ten year study on all of those documents and every one of them, every one that they could dig up over ten years. And what they concluded after ten years that 44% of everything that contributed to those documents came straight from your Bible. Came straight from your Bible. And do you remember Barack Obama said, we're not a Christian country, but we were founded on Christian principles, and that is absolutely irrefutable. It is absolutely undeniable.
So now back in those days, the whole thing was predicated upon the fear of God. Today, Washington DC is mobilized and and moves under the fear of man. It's what the lobbyists will say. You know? It's what will the news media say. It's what the campaign contributors will say. What they'll think. You see what I'm saying? It's the fear of man. Has nothing to do with the fear of God whatsoever. Nothing whatsoever. Second Timothy chapter two. Chapter one. I'm sorry. Second Timothy chapter one. Back in your new testament. Second Timothy chapter one.
Now here it is. This is it. This is the this is the this is the bread and butter. Alright? This is the nuts and bolts of the whole thing. Second Timothy chapter one and verse number seven. For God hath not given us the spirit of fear, but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind. Alright? Now here's the thing. Here's the thing. Catch this. Fear is a spirit. Fear is a spirit. Isn't that what it says? That's why I left it up. The spirit of fear. I'm pointing my cursor at it like you can see it. You can't. The the spirit of fear, for God hath not given us the spirit of fear. Now this this spirit must be overcome by a greater spirit, and the greater spirit is what?
The greater spirit is who? It's the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit. The spirit imparts three things. I wanna give them to you really quick. Alright. Go to Romans chapter five. Romans I'm sorry. Romans chapter 15. Alright. You go to Matthew, Mark, Luke, John, Acts, Romans, first epistle of the apostle Paul in your Bible? Romans chapter 15. Right? Yes. Romans chapter 15. Now fear abides in our lives, in our hearts from time to time for whatever the reason might be. You know, maybe it's some of the reasons that I mentioned, you know, death, sickness, poverty, mankind, maybe it's something else. But but but nonetheless, fear sometimes harbors great corners of our heart.
Sometimes fear plants itself as a seed in our mind. The only way that we can deal with that scripturally and biblically is we have to re replace the spirit of fear with another spirit, and the Holy Spirit aids and abets in that process. Now Romans chapter 15 and verse number 13. Romans 15 verse 13. Now the god of hope fill you with all joy and peace in believing that you may be that you may abound in hope through the power of the Holy Ghost. You know, the more hope you have, the less fear you've got. Say that again. The more hope you have, the less fear you've got. Now, New Testament hope is in the book of Titus, hope is synonymous with Jesus Christ.
He is our hope. He's not just a hope. He's our hope. Our hope rests in him. And so the more hope you have and you extract that from the word of God, then when you're full of hope, there's little room for fear. Alright? But that's not all. Look at Romans, 14. Let's go back one chapter. Romans 14. Let me just look at the next page like I did. Romans 14 and verse 17. Romans fourteen seventeen, for the kingdom of God is not meat and drink, but righteousness and peace and joy in the Holy Ghost. Joy in the Holy Ghost. You know what else the spirit does?
The spirit communicates joy to the saints. The spirit communicates joy to the saints. The more joy you have, the less fear you have. The more joy you have, the less fear you have, because hope and joy go together. They go together. I mean, think of it. Isn't it great to be full of joy? I mean, just to be overflowing with joy. Well, you know, maybe it's been a while. Maybe it's been a while. Maybe you need today to say, Lord, give me some joy. Lord, give me some joy. The the the fruit of the spirit is what? It's is love. It's joy, peace, gentleness, meekness, faith, long suffering. Amen?
That's what Galatians says in chapter five. And then finally, the spirit imparts the love of God. Romans chapter five. Let's go back a couple of pages to Romans in chapter five. First sip of coffee I'm having this afternoon, And it's cold. It's cold. Romans chapter five. The spirit imparts the love of God. Now I find it interesting though as, you know, that all these verses and and I've got companion verses over in Galatians and and and and and and so on, but all the verses that I'm giving you right now are all in Romans. And do you know what Romans is?
Romans is the first Pauline epistle. Romans is establishing church age doctrine and establishing church age doctrine for the saints. That's what Romans is all about. You know what Paul wants you to know? You know what the Lord wants you to know in in the first book that he wrote exclusively to you as a believer? Exclusively to you. Now, I mean, I we get all kinds of stuff from the gospel and and from and from Acts and you know, but those books aren't exclusively for us, the church, the body of believers, but Romans is. And you know what the Lord wants you to know?
He wants you to know, first book out of the box, exclusively for the New Testament Christian, is that the Spirit imparts hope. The Spirit imparts hope. The Spirit communicates joy. The Spirit imparts the love of God. Chapter five and verse number three. Chapter five, Romans verse three. And not only so, but we glory in tribulations also, knowing that tribulation worketh patience, and patience experience, and experience hope, and hope maketh not ashamed because the love of God is shed abroad in our hearts by the Holy Ghost, which is given unto us.
Now I've heard the saints say, don't say this, but I've heard saint I've heard the saints say, well, you know, I'm praying for patience, peep preacher. I'm I'm praying for patience. Do do you know what do you know what your book just said? Do you know what your tribulation worketh patience. So if you're praying for patience, you're praying for tribulation. The Lord said, do you wanna run do you wanna run that one by one more time? Are you sure about that? But tribulation does come. Tribulation does come. There's no question about that. Alright? So the spirit imparts the love of God. Alright? But here's the real bone cruncher with this whole thing. Alright? The the the real deal here, first John chapter four. Go to first John chapter four, please.
Matthew, Mark well, I'm not gonna read them all the way through. Go to Hebrews, first Peter, second Peter, and then you get to first John. First John chapter four. First John chapter this is our last verse for the for tonight. Alright? I promise. I know I said it before, but I promise. Last verse. First John chapter four and verse 18. Now it could not be said any more plainly than this. This is absolutely the killer right here. First John chapter four verse 18. There is no love in fear. There is no fear in love. Excuse me. There is no fear in love, but perfect love casteth out fear because fear hath torment.
He that feareth is not made perfect in love. We love him because he first loved us. We love him because he first loved us. Alright. Now here's the deal. That was verse 19. I didn't clip it. Now here's the deal. The more you fall in love with Jesus Christ, the more you sense his love for you, then there's less room for fear. It all hinges right here. Hope, joy, love, god's love. So we really don't need to fear. We really don't. I guess we're not given to the spirit of fear. Paul said we don't have to. Now there's some things that, you know, we've already indicated, you know, common sense would dictate that we fear, like, the consequences of sin. You know?
But when you're trying to do right and be right, you don't have to fear. Alright? Like like like I said before, and I'll say it one more time. The the problem with this lesson is not there wasn't too little information, but there was way too much. So what I tried to do tonight, I tried really tried to narrow it down, fine tune it in a way that I thought would, you know, perhaps be palatable. You know? Give you some bird seed for thought. You know? I can give you a little bit, but it's incumbent upon you. It's incumbent upon you to get the majority of your food.
