In this episode of the Joe Rooz Show, Joe delves into a deep exploration of America's spiritual history, focusing on the Christian heritage that has shaped the nation. Joe reflects on the importance of understanding America's spiritual past, emphasizing the biblical principle that "righteousness exalts a nation." He shares insights from historical figures like Andrew Jackson and Sam Houston, highlighting their contributions to America's spiritual and political landscape. Joe also discusses the influence of religion on America's development, touching on the role of Protestantism and the challenges posed by Catholicism in the nation's history.
Joe continues by examining America's innovative spirit, attributing the nation's advancements in science and technology to a foundation built on biblical principles. He recounts the contributions of inventors like Benjamin Franklin, Thomas Edison, and Samuel Morse, illustrating how a belief in God and adherence to biblical teachings have propelled the United States to the forefront of global innovation. The episode concludes with a call to return to righteousness to restore America's standing and influence in the world, underscoring the show's ongoing theme of intertwining faith with national identity.

Transmitting live from the asylum studios, deep in the bowels of Southwest Texas, it's the Joe Rooz Show. The show where we talk about anything and everything, where nothing is sacred, nothing is watered down, and nothing is PC.
[00:04:55] Unknown:
Well, hey, folks. This is Joe Rooz, and it is great to be with you once again as we open up and study the precious word of God, your King James Bible. And you know something folks, as always, whenever and wherever you find yourselves listening to us or watching us, it's always my prayer that you also find yourself in the grace and the mercy of our lord and savior, the lord Jesus Christ. Welcome to the Joe Rooz show. And folks, we are, of course, as always, transmitting to you live once again, at the asylum studios from the Pimple on the backside of Texas, the beautiful city of Eagle Pass, and it is a beautiful, beautiful Sunday afternoon here.
Reminds me of the old, Bob Murphy, commentator from, the New York Mets back in the day in the sixties, seventies, eighties, into the nineties. How, he would always say something to the effect of, you know, it's a it's a balmy 84 degrees here at Shea. White billowy sky, I blew it. It's a balmy 84 degrees here at Shea. Beautiful blue skies, white billowy clouds above. It's a beautiful day for baseball. Well, it's a beautiful night for a podcast. It's a beautiful beautiful night for a Bible study. But and I look forward to this. I was looking forward to this throughout the course of the day. And, you know, we've been studying over the last, oh, I don't know, eight weeks, Maybe more than that.
Maybe more than that. Last eight weeks, we've been talking about, God's plan and purpose for The United States Of America. We talked about the history of this great country and the heritage, the Christian heritage that this country was founded upon. And, it's been it's been a great study, and, you know, I've been asked why are we studying something like this. And it's important though. It's important. We have to understand as Americans and as Christians that America has a spiritual history that few countries have ever had. And what we're gonna do with tonight, we're gonna get into a study of of God honoring his word when he says, righteousness exalte the nation.
But as always before we do that, we're we're gonna get into some housekeeping stuff first, clean up a few things here, and, hey, did you check out the show yesterday we had with, our crypto psychic, our resident Chris crypto psychic, Marissa Lee. Great show. Really interesting, information passed on there. So we we really appreciate and, and and thank, Marissa for her time and, getting on the show here with us, yesterday. And, we'll we'll be meeting up with her again, September 20, I believe it was. So not, so not next week, the week after, the week after that. So, that's gonna be a a very interesting conversation. We're gonna see where things are in the world at that time, especially in the we're talking about the crypto world. We we don't really wanna talk politics on the Sunday show because it you know, we talk politics pretty much all week long, and, we don't wanna get too too heavy with it. You know, we need a little break every now and then, and that's why we do that. That's why we do it on that's why we do this the show on Saturdays, with the, the the crypto and the finance stuff. That's why we do the bible study on Sundays, you know, kinda break away from it. So we are basically doing six shows a week. Do you realize that? Six shows a week. And, you know, I need to get a wardrobe person because I don't know if you saw it. I was coming in here. I was cleaning up the the collar and all that stuff. I was I looked a mess, you know, but, I like the shirt, so that's what it is. Wanted to be relaxed and comfortable tonight.
But, we'll get that's alright. Don't don't mind me. I'm just, I've been I've been sucking down too much of the methylene blue today, so I'm I'm kind of, kinda mellow and relaxed and chill and all that stuff. Did they still use that word chill? I I don't know. I don't know. But, we're gonna get into our bible study here in a second. So let's, let's do some housekeeping. Let's get some of the stuff out of the way. So if you would, head over to our website, joroos.com. That's joroos.com. It should be up there on your screen momentarily. Joroos.com.
Open up the contact section. Open up that web form. Send us over a message. Let us know whatever's on your heart, whatever's in your mind, any questions, comments, cares, or concerns that you have, any issues, anything that you wanted to let us know about, and, any ideas for a show, guests, or topics you wanna discuss. Like, just like this past, this past Tuesday, we did a special show. Well, not a special show, but our our regular show with our CEO, of, Ezra Healing, with us, Svetlana Ryilkov. And the show was, specifically geared towards, a particular subject that that it was recommended to us by a listener. So, we enjoyed doing that. It was a lot of fun. Not exactly my area of expertise. You know, I don't really know too much about menopause and things like that, but it was an interesting conversation. It branched off into many different things, and we we really enjoyed that. So, so check that out if you haven't checked it out already. It's a it's a really good show. And then, so you let just let us know. I mean, we might pick your subject to do a a specific show about, and it could be about anything. It doesn't have to be specifically on health care or anything like that. It could be whatever. Just let us know if you have a guest in mind that you like us to try to get. We'd be happy to oblige and try to get you the guest that you'd like to see.
So I'll be in to please. That's that's the main thing here. That's what we try to do. Alright. If you don't wanna use the web form, fine. You can always email me directly at [email protected]. That's [email protected]. And then also, if you would, when you get to the website, please take a look at the, support page. We have a support page on our website. If you'd like to help us out with a donation, you could do that in many, many, many ways. We have them all listed there on the website. So you could take a look at that, and just remember that this is a value for value show. And all that basically means is that if you receive anything of value from what we're doing here with the show, we're asking that you return that value to us in the form of a donation. It could be a one time donation. It could be recurring donation. It could be, in any of the cryptos that you see listed up on our website. Our all of our wallet information is up there and available to you as well. Or, you could sign up for one of our producer tiers, and they're all listed right there in the website. And we'll go into more of that later on, toward the end of the show before we wrap things up, like we have been doing.
Alright. Folks, I mentioned Ezra Healing, our sponsor or one of our sponsors. Ezra Healing is a substantial part of the new wellness paradigm currently being born in North America and around the globe. The global citizenry are no longer satisfied with the sick care version of so called health care. Band aid medicine, endlessly treating symptoms rather than root causes, has to be abandoned, and it has to be abandoned as soon as possible. Patient centric care must be the priority. We need to transition towards the do no harm model of private care that places humanity at the forefront of real health and wellness care. In this new model, your entire lifestyle is examined, analyzed, and analyzed to promote and support the totality of your body's integrated systems.
Ezra Healing is a solutions based health promotion and disease prevention grassroots movement that's always evolving to best serve you and your family. For more information, just head over to ezrahealing.com. That's ezrahealing.com, and, you can check out their website right there, ezrahealing.com. I should've put it up sooner. I apologize for that. But check them out. And when you do get over there, if you do reach out to anybody, let them know that you heard it you heard about it right here on the Joe Russo. Let them know their money's being well spent. We're we're actually meeting our obligations and commitments and promises, and we try to do our very best to keep our promises. Right? Right.
Alright. So ezrahealing.com. Check them out. Alright. Now if you would, take your Bible. Got mine right here today. Take your Bible and head over to the book of of Proverbs chapter 14. Proverbs chapter 14. Alright. And I don't know why it seems so dark in here tonight. Right? Is it me? I I don't know. But Proverbs chapter 14, I had maybe it's I repositioned the lighting. Maybe that might be doing it. But Proverbs chapter 14 Proverbs in chapter 14. And, again, if you're just tuning in, if you're just saw a couple of numbers pick up a little bit there. So if you're just tuning in, we've been doing a series on the spiritual side of American history.
We kinda we we really launched into into this with the study of the American Revolution, and we've gone we've gone through that. We studied, some things about the declaration of independence, the constitution, the first and second amendments, in particular, and and so on, and we went down the line. And, moving on now, we've covered some other ground, but I think it's important that as Americans, and as Christians it's gonna bug me. But I think it's important for us as Americans and as Christians to understand that America has a spiritual history that few countries have ever ever had.
And the more we get that, the more we comprehend, and the more we comprehend that, I think the better prepared we are to defend our conservative ideals, our conservative values, because they're built on the book. They're built on the book. Now Proverbs chapter 14 and verse 34. Proverbs chapter 14 and verse 34, and if you, don't have your Bible here, here it is. Righteousness exalted the nation, but sin is a reproach to any people. Well, I think that's pretty clear. Right? Righteousness exalteth a nation. Alright? How about we, go to the Lord in prayer? Father, we would we would add we would ask you to please add your blessings on the examination of our history today, And, Lord, we ask you to bless it as as it is confederate with your word.
And, Father, we can we please give us the opportunity to join these things together with a real sense of appreciation for what you've done for us? And we'll thank you for it. In the precious name of our savior, the lord Jesus, we do pray. Amen. Alright. Well, one thing though, by the way, I wanna tell you is that while I was going through my notes last week, I I realized that I had forgotten to pass on something to you, the last time we were together, last Sunday night. And if you remember, we were talking a little bit about Andrew Jackson. You know, Andrew Jackson was a great mentor of Sam Houston, and, he had a he had a real affection for Sam Houston.
And as a result of that, Sam desperately wanted his young son, Andrew. Wanted him wanted his young son to meet Andrew. But when they arrived at Hermitage to see the general, they found out the day before that he had died. And so he was, as you would imagine, rather grief stricken about the whole thing. And they went into the room where Andrew Jackson was stretched out in the casket, and he and he said he said to his son, he was my son, try to remember that you've looked upon the face of Andrew Jackson. Because in the estimation of Sam Houston, Andrew Jackson made an incredible contribution to America.
And last week, we talked a little bit about Jackson's conversion, and his faith and trust in Jesus Christ, and, his profession to that late in life. Now Sam Houston, as as you probably well know, that's that's a name that's not unfamiliar to most people, especially down here in Texas. He made a great contribution to America as well. And, you know, he led, he led a great victory in Texas's war of independence from Mexico, outnumbered 1,600 to seven forty. Houston was able to route Santa Ana's army at the San. I'm gonna say it wrong, and I'm gonna get corrected by everybody, the San Jacinto River on 04/21/1836.
Now that fight actually took twenty minutes. That was it. Just twenty minutes. Sam Houston was pretty sharp. You know what he did? He waited until 04:00 in the afternoon to engage the Mexicans when it was their traditional time for a siesta. And so while they were sleeping, the the the cry of remember the Alamo was going strong, and and so the battle didn't really take too long. Santa Ana was essentially, an opium smoking dope head. You know? So much for marijuana. Right? So he so he he was in a state of, like, you know, who knows where. It was somewhere between Venus and Mars, during a a great deal of that fight. But as a result of that, Sam Houston was inaugurated president of the Republic Of Texas in the 1836.
And he said this, and Andrew Jackson agreed with him. He said, Texas is the key to our future safety. Texas is the key to our future safety. And as much as it was then, it is now. Because in other words, Texas was viewed as a safety zone between the rest of America and Mexico. So Jackson rejoiced with Houston at at at the formal entrance of Texas into the union in March 1845. Now Sam Houston, as as, as Sam Houston reached his senior years, he became a lot more reflective just like his mentor, Andrew Jackson, did and that we talked about last week. And, and so an old church historian named Elliot described it this way, and I quote, Houston's conversion was doubtless due primarily to the remarkable influence of his devout wife, who was Maggie Lee, prior to their marriage in 1840.
He did not make a public profession of faith until 1854 when the united when he united with the Baptist Church at Independence and was baptized by a doctor RC Burlson November 19 of that year. He then became a regular attendant upon preaching and prayer meeting service. He led up he led in public prayer, and when he laid dying at his home in Huntsville, he expressed to his family and his friends his implicit faith in the savior. Alright. Now what we're gonna do tonight is we're gonna launch into a study of God honoring his word when it says, righteousness exalteth the nation.
You know, when God says when when God says something, he obligates himself to honor it. He obligates himself to honor it. You know, God God doesn't forget stuff like you and I do. You know, he remembers every little jot, every little tittle, doesn't he? And so a a lot of what we're gonna see here tonight is a result of that, of just that, you know, people believing the word of God and acting on it. And so, you know, some of the great names in our annals of history have made public professions of faith and trust in Jesus Christ. Regardless of whatever denominational preference they may have had, they were very explicit in their faith and confidence in the finished work of the Lord Jesus.
Well, upon recommendation of president James Polk, Congress declared war again on Mexico on 05/13/1846. Now we've had a couple wars, you know, with our our southern neighbors. You know that. Right? California at that particular time, the Californians, were getting a little upset with, the Californians are getting a little bit upset with the Mexican government, and they said that it was, it was a lack of courts, lack of police, and, schools and postal service and, you know, among other the grievance that they had. And the the Mexican government really, you know, kinda just treated them like, you know, the, the red headed stepchild down there. You know? And so, they were essentially on their own. And so the animosity then continued to grow. Now you have to understand, the problem then, as I as I think it's it's it is to a great degree now, was never with the Mexicans.
It wasn't with the people. It was with the government. It was with the government. See, a lot of Mexican people live in Texas, and they lived in Texas. And we're all for the departure of Texas from from Mexico. You know? The that the the the cloud of influence, the same, and and the same identical ins the same identical situation existed in California. So those folks saw that it it would be greatly to their advantage to separate from Mexico because of the government. Now at the risk of sounding very politically incorrect, you know, you know, I always worry about that. Right?
So at the risk of and and and and we're gonna address this more a little bit later on, but the number one problem with the Mexican government was the Mexican religion. That was the number one problem. This is probably something you haven't heard, but, you know, in your public school education. But, you know, the war is primarily with Catholicism. You see? And and and you'll see more about that as we develop this. But, just just stop and think about that for a moment, though. America, as we're gonna see, was making great strides under predominantly, protestantism or or a a protestant kind of people and thought and religion.
People that honored the word of God. Now can you can you think and and, you know, anytime you talk like this, you know, some someone's gonna get a hold of it and say, you know, boy, that preacher hates Catholics. You know, that guy hates which is probably the dumbest thing in the world when you think about it. I came from a Catholic family for crying out loud. I know what it is to be Catholic. See, 99% of Italians are all Catholic. That's the religious heritage that we're born into. So to say that I hate Catholics is to say that I hate my family.
You know, I I still have I have an awful lot of family members that are that are Roman Catholic. You know, and believe me, I've done everything I know how to do to help them understand that Catholicism alone will not save them. That will not regenerate them. It will not get their sins forgiven. It will not be a guaranteed trip to heaven. Only Jesus Christ can guarantee that. Amen? Can we agree to that? Alright. But the contribution that America has made to the world are so astronomical, they're almost beyond number. And when you compare the contributions of America to any Catholic country you wanna name, just you could name any one of them. It doesn't matter. You'll see that that's that it is so overwhelmingly lopsided because Catholicism majors in ignorance.
Catholicism majors in ignorance. They attempt to keep people in the dark spiritually, and spiritual ignorance leads to intellectual ignorance. I'm kinda get way ahead of myself here, so I'm gonna let me just kinda back this back this train up a little bit. Alright. So now so the Californians raised a flag called the Bear Flag Republic. Alright? It was a white flag with a bear and a star painted on it. And, and and general Taylor, went down and he captured Monterey, Mexico, and, Wilfred Scott eventually took Mexico City. And when formal peace was finally secured, it was secured in February 1848, and The United States had acquired, in addition to California, the present territory of New Mexico, Utah, and Nevada for for roughly, 918,000 square miles. So a lot of territory was added to these United States, you know, at that time. So, you know, it it seems, you know, as as and and then, of course, you know, you know, the Oregon territory was not, you know, wasn't too long after that, and, and there and there there was something that was that was stated way, way, way, way back in, in the constitution days by a mandate doctor Doctor Witherspoon, and he said, my vision is a is a turnpike to the Pacific.
That's what he said. My vision's a turnpike to the Pacific. So in other words, he envisioned North America from the Canadian line all the way down to the present line of of Mexico being joined together under these United States, from the Atlantic to to the Pacific, consequently inspiring Catherine Bates to to to pen from sea to shining sea. You know that song? Well, now now is that just because God said, well, you know, it'd be a nice thing to do? Take your Bibles and get over to Genesis chapter nine. Genesis chapter nine. You know, you and I have a have the privilege to live in a land of manifest destiny. We talked about that.
And unless something radically changes unless something radically changes, it's all gonna it's it's it's all about to go down the toilet. But God but but, you know, a lot of people confuse prophecy. Let me let me phrase it that way. They think that all prophecy is a, is a is a divine endorsement, which isn't necessarily the case. God prophesies that evil things will take place as well as good things. Does he not? So in prophetic anticipation, God says this, speaking to the three sons of Noah, Shem, Ham, and Japheth. And if you look at these three boys, these three these three young men are the progenitors of the three races in America.
Alright? Shem is the oriental race, Ham is the black race, and Japheth is the Caucasian race. Alright? And, and he has something to say about every single one of those boys. Alright. And he says this over in Genesis. Let me get over there. Genesis and chapter nine and verse 27. He says, God shall enlarge Japheth. So, historically, Japheth landed up in what we call today Europe. Alright? He was the European Caucasian, but God said somewhere down the trail, he's gonna enlarge Japheth. Right? He says, and shall dwell in the tents of Shem. Now the American Indian the American Indian is a Shemite.
See, he he's he's not Japheth, he's Semitic, which, by the way, if you ever get into a conversation with an American Indian, they'll say they have no regard for the white man's religion, speaking about Christianity. Now let me give you a little ammunition here. Your Christianity your Christianity is not white man's religion. You got your religion from Shem. See, Japheth didn't invent Christianity. A Jew is a Semite or a Shemite. So you know where our religion came from ethnically speaking? It came from Shem. It came from Shem. So I guess you could say we borrowed it.
You know, thank God in Romans chapter 11, God said that we could. You know, thank God you can get in on the act. You see? So so so Japheth and Ham are both borrowers of Shem's religion. Every major religion in the world came from Shem. Shem is a mediator. He's, sorry, not a mediator, a a meditator. Shem is a meditator. He's a thinker. You see? Along along those lines. So you talk about Buddhism, Shem, Islam, Shem, Hinduism, Shem, Christianity, Shem. Shem's the guy that sits around on the top of the mountain and ponders things. And so so God, understanding that, made his revelations to Shem, and then to pass down to the other two races. Now I'm glad I got in on them.
I'm glad we got in on them. Now so we said, God's gonna going to expand Japheth. He's gonna enlarge Japheth. We see that in the verse. If it'll come up. There we go. God shall enlarge Japheth, and he shall dwell in the tents of Shem. Now just because God said that Japheth is gonna dwell in the tents of Shem, and that and that's and that's what that's what we've done. That's what Japheth has done for the last four hundred years. It's it's not a direction that Shem should be abused or mistreated in any way. You follow me? And and in some cases, he has been at the hands of Japheth.
Shem has sometimes been horribly mistreated by Japheth in North America, and that's a tragedy. It's an absolute tragedy. But, you know, only a fool would expect a nation of flawed humans to evolve into a utopian society this side of New Jerusalem. Amen? Because you know what we are? You know what we are, honestly? We're just flawed humans. The greatest king that ever lived was king David, and he had his flaws, didn't he? He he had his flaws. And we have, as Americans, have had ours. And, you know, if you want, as as as long as you wanna talk about our flaws, you gotta stop and think about a minute about the issue of slavery. Alright. Now the Bible doesn't endorse slavery as we generally think of it, historically and traditionally.
The Bible does endorse servitude, but in the Bible days but in Bible days, a man could sell himself into servitude, and that was intended to pay his debts. And that's what the year of jubilee was all about. The year of jubilee would come along, and then you would you'd start from square one all over again. The guy would either walk out the door and go free, or he could re up his contract and, you know, that's kinda the way the system worked back then. But back in the days of slavery, Japheth imported a lot of slaves to this country, and some of them were absolutely horribly mistreated.
But here's a thought that no one ponders. Here's a thought that no one really thinks about. If those slaves were so horribly mistreated, and some were, absolutely no question about it, some were. But if they were so horribly mistreated, why did they en masse, adopt the white man's religion? There were 4,000,000 slaves at the time of the emancipation of this country. Only only about a 100,000 of them converted to Catholicism. The vast majority to this day are called Baptists. Isn't that right? So you see what they did? They accepted a religion. You know, there was a great preacher by the name of John Jasper.
And, listen let I want you to listen to this story. John Jasper. John was a slave, but his masters allowed him to travel on Sundays to preach to other black churches, across the plantations. He lived in Virginia, which you know, the Richmond area. Well, when at the emancipation, of course, John Jasper was set free, and so he established a church instantly in Richmond, Virginia, which grew exponentially. They even built a building. They've a large built a huge building by all standards. And on Sunday nights, the balcony was filled with white folks because they wanted to hear John Jasper preach.
Because all accounts are, that boy can preach. He could preach. I mean, he was a preaching machine. And so they came. They came. They left their more staid, traditional, formal churches that they attended on Sunday morning. And on Sunday night, they said, man, let's go here and hear John Jasper preach. Now the question is this. God uses tragic circumstances sometimes, bad circumstances, to accomplish something right and good. Take your Bibles. Go to Romans chapter eight. Romans chapter eight. You know, as as tragic as some of the consequences of slavery were, and they were.
In the larger picture, in the final analysis, dying in Africa under the under the dark influence of of a witch doctor or dying on a plantation having heard and received the gospel of Jesus Christ. What's better? What's better? I mean, you gotta look at it that way too. You see? That's the larger picture. Romans chapter eight and verse 28. And we know that all things work together for good to them that love God, to them who are call who are the called according to his purpose. Alright? So there are many offenders. Many offenders.
Well, America has a manifest destiny. America has been a great country, but it had its flaws. No question about it. It has not been perfect. And and, again, you you can't expect perfection out of imperfect human beings. But the Bible the Bible, that book assures us where sin abounded, grace did much more abound. Now initially and and let me rewind for a minute and and and talk about Indians. You know, we talked about slaves, but let's talk let's go back and talk about Indians for a minute. Did you ever hear of, did you ever hear of a guy by the name of David Brainerd? Well, David Brainerd was an early missionary to the Indians way back east. I'm talking colonial days way back in Pennsylvania.
And that guy, I mean, he sold out lock, stock, and barrel to win Indians to Jesus Christ. And he did an incredible job, a masterful job. And if you haven't read his life story, you need to. It's a worthwhile read. You'll get more out of reading about David Brainerd than you'll ever watch getting you'll ever get out of watching a football game. I promise you that. I mean, that guy had a love in his heart for the Native American, for the Indian. But a lot of other missionaries came westward with the same kind of zeal and and at the same and and and and that same kind of resolution to win these Native Americans of Jesus Christ. And one that you'll never read about in the history books, one you'll never hear about on the History Channel, is an Indian that everybody's heard of, and he trusted Jesus Christ as a result of a Baptist missionary witnessing to him incessantly.
And that guy's name happens to be Geronimo. Geronimo is in heaven today based on his faith and trust and testimony in the lord Jesus Christ. Now I now you won't, like I said, pick that up in in in any history book, but you gotta understand that America has a spiritual history that is ignored. Ignored. You know, the Bible says over in Luke chapter 16, that which is highly esteemed among men is an abomination in the sight of God. That's what God cared about. The way back when those pilgrims landed at Plymouth Rock, and and and and we assessed this early on, in in in the Mayflower Compact and some of their writings, what they said was this, we came to America for two reasons.
Now people will say, well, they came because of religious persecution, and not precisely true. It's not precisely true. Okay? They left England. They left England because of religious persecution, But they didn't come to they didn't come to America from England. They went from England to Holland, and they spent eleven years in Holland. Eleven years. And after spending those years in Holland, they said, you know, we got a problem here. And the problem is that the Dutch people were so worldly that they're having a negative influence on our children. How does that sound? That sound familiar?
It should. Hello, America? You out there? And so they said, we've gotta do something else. And so they listed two reasons. That one plus another one, why they made the decision to come to America. And and and, you know, you know, they came here. They tried to make a go of it here, but number one number one, they wanted to escape that worldly influence of the Dutch. They didn't feel like, you know, they they could go back to England because of the religious persecution they had originally experienced there. But they said there's a second reason.
There's a second reason, and here it is. We understand that there's a native pagan people there, and we feel a compelling need for evangelism, and we want to expose them to the gospel. You see, they they they don't teach you that. They don't teach you that in history book. They don't teach you that in public schools and a lot of private schools. They don't teach you that. You don't get that. But all you have to do seriously, all you have to do is read what they themselves wrote. That's what they said. That's not extrapolating or guessing. That's what they themselves said.
So this concept of evangelism has always been a common denominator, a thread just woven into in the fabric of America right from the very beginning. That's been an existing thing that God has honored. Righteousness exalteth a nation. Alright? So God's not all that concerned about, you know, nineteenth century America and and and that that the history books write about. God doesn't care about, Aster's millions or or Hawthorne's novels or Audubon's birds or Wright's architecture or or Whitman's paintings or or or or or, Holmes or or Holmes philosophy or or man's educational fantasies.
God doesn't even really care about Doubleday's creation of baseball. Right? He doesn't care about any of that stuff. You know what God cares about? Do you know what God cares about? He's not willing that any should perish, but that all should come to repentance. That's what God cares about. That's God. That's what God cares about. Well, that threat of theological philosophy, if you wanna call it that, has always been here, has always been in America. Now for for a long time, anything beyond a 100 miles inland from the Atlantic Coast was a virtual wilderness. I mean, you know, nothing but forest.
And as one writer said, phantoms moving through the forest. Another historian, Virgil Bop, wrote this, quote, up until about 1840, the Baptist movement in America was highly evangelistic. Strong home and foreign mission development, preferring denominational work, but willing cooperate interdenominationally if needed, concern for education, and desiring to keep the West from Catholicism. So that was a major motive. That was a major motive. Let's keep the West from Catholicism. He goes on. Now such was the Baptist growth by 1844 that Torbit's report total membership of seven hundred twenty thousand forty six and nine thousand three hundred eighty five churches with 6,364 ministers.
Alright. So that comp he goes on to say that computes out to an increase of 360% from 1814 to 1844, during which time the population growth in The United States was at a 140%. Alright. So so this this phenomenal expansion, missions wise, the the first non Catholic church West Of The Mississippi, permanent church was the Bethel Baptist Church of Gerardo County, Missouri. That was the first one. And that one was organized on 07/19/2006. Now that goes all the way back to the Lewis and Clark days. That's a long time ago, man. That's a long time ago. And and the Baptists were concerned with spiritual education.
The first Sunday school in America was founded by Samuel Slater, who was a Baptist layman, on 09/15/1799 in Pawtucket, Rhode Rhode Island. By 1850 by 1850, there were five Baptist institutions of higher learning in the East. Alright. Now I'm gonna I'm gonna read to you some names that that that that you're familiar with, but you didn't know that they were Baptist colleges initially. Alright? Brown University, a Baptist college initially, Waterville College, now called Colby, Madison University, now called Colgate, Columbia University, Louisburg University, now we know it as Bucknell.
Those were all Baptist colleges started just like Harvard and Yale were started, you know, with the primary purpose of training young men for the ministry of Jesus Christ. It's fascinating. It it really is when you when you read and you study this, it's fascinating. Later on, it was Baylor, Furman, Crowes Theological Seminary, the University of Chicago followed all of, you know, follow all of these were Baptist institutions. So so the great emphasis on foreign missions was also in the mix. The Baptist Missionary Society of Massachusetts was formed in eighteen o two. In the year 1812, the Salem Bible Translation And Foreign Mission Society was organized followed by the Baptist General Convention for Foreign Missions in 1814.
In 1824, the Baptist General Tract Society was started in Washington DC. So the Baptists were at the forefront of of pushing into the West, the wilderness, at the same time. And at the same time, they they were doing what they felt like they could do and should do in foreign missions. But the Baptists weren't the only ones. They weren't the only ones. Alright? They they were they were they were kinda like spearheading a lot of it, but there were but there were some others that came along. We talked a little bit last week about the Methodists. You know, there there was a there was a great evangelist of yesterday named Charles Finney.
He was a Presbyterian. And probably the biggest reason he was a Presbyterian was he he was converted in October 1821 through the influence of the Adams County Presbyterian Church in Adams, New York. Now, he was already well recognized as an accomplished attorney at the point of his conversion. And even though the Presbyterians, primarily clung to the doctrine of Calvinism, which we talked about, a couple weeks ago, Finney rejected that. He rejected Calvinism. He said, no. I'm not a Calvinist. I'm not into this, predetermined, salvation stuff. You know?
I believe that everyone has an opportunity to accept or reject. In fact, he stressed that the sinner's personal accountability and he stressed the sinner's personal accountability and and and publicly invited his listeners to use what he called the anxious seed. Interesting. Right? The anxious seed. I've never heard that term outside of a Presbyterian or or or, outside of Finney's ministry. Back it up that way. The anxious seat. But when I stopped and thought about it, you know, in in in in preaching the gospel and telling people without Jesus Christ, they're lost and they're going to hell, I've watched a lot of people get anxious and nervous.
Like, really, really anxious, man. So, someone wrote someone wrote this, quote, his preaching his preaching exploits read like the book of Acts, having married Lydia Andrews in October 1824. Their honeymoon had to be delayed six months. Now how would you like that, ladies? How would you like that? Because he goes on. Because a revival broke out where the groom happened to be preaching. He said, I can't leave. I can't leave. On another occasion, a factory owner got so burdened that he shut down his plant so that the visiting evangelist could proclaim the gospel to his needy employees. Now now Finney's primary area of of evangelism was what you and I would call today, the Erie Canal. Alright? So he basically he traveled, up and down the Erie Canal from Buffalo, New York down to Rome, New York, Utica, Albany, Syracuse, Auburn, you know, up up and down that whole stretch through Upstate New York. Now I'm I'm familiar with it because I've lived in New York most of my life.
So, I I kinda I know where these areas are, and I've been to to several of those of those areas. But when Charles Finney conducted meetings and a meeting in those days wasn't like a meeting we have today. You know? A meeting a meeting in church today is well, you know, let's go to church tonight, and, you know, some churches, they got really revved up and hot, you know, you know, they might have an extended three or four night meeting. You know? But now now, Charles Charles Finney's meetings ran for six months. Six months.
You know, people had to make, you know, different arrangements. They had to figure out, you know, when to cook, when to cook meals, you know, how to do their laundry, and, you know, and so on. He held two meetings in Upstate New York, each one for the duration of six months. And between those two meetings, over a 100,000 people professed Jesus Christ as their savior. A 100,000. It's estimated that that Finney put a 100,000 members into the Northern Presbyterian churches and influenced another 500,000 decisions to trust Jesus Christ.
That's estimated. Lawson, who's another historian, stated this. 85 of Finney's converts remain true to their professions of faith. 85%. You know you know Billy Graham, great modern evangelist, they estimate that Billy Graham's success rate and and and I'm not blaming him for it. You know? I'm I'm blaming the the times as much as anything else, but they estimate that his success rate was only about 11%. That's a big difference. That's a big difference. 8511%. So I know you're probably sitting there saying, why are you bringing all this up? I'm bringing all this up to show you that America is steeped in Bible based evangelistic history, and that thread runs through it from one end to the other.
You know, sometimes seeds are planted that, you know, don't pop out of the ground for years and years and years. You know, out in Death Valley, they say that, you know, in one of those rare years when they actually get some rain and it might be ten, twelve, you know, fifteen, twenty years in between, then all of a sudden the valley floor is just covered with flowers. Alright? Now spiritual seeds are very similar. You know, do does anybody remember the name Alexis de Tocqueville? You should if you're a conservative. Alexis de Tocqueville.
Well, he he was a Frenchman who came to America, and, de Tocqueville made some very acute observations about America. Here's what he said among other things. He said this, quote, upon my arrival in The United States, the religious aspect of the country was the first thing that struck my attention. He also made the astute observation that legitimate Christianity liberates the intellect by stating this, quote, in The United States, the influence of religion is not confined to the manners, but it extends to the intelligence of the people.
And as he traveled through a bible literate nation, a country where where the citizens were literate in their Bible. De Tocqueville was simply witnessing the marvelous fulfillment of of John eight thirty two, which says you know what John eight thirty two says? John eight thirty two happens to be the most misquoted verse in in in scripture, or one of the most misquoted verses in scriptures. John eight thirty two says this, ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free. A lot of people change that to set you free, but it's not set you free. It's make you free. You know what the Bible does?
You know what the Bible does? It frees up intellectualism. It doesn't stifle it. It opens it up. And I'm I'm gonna give you some examples of that pretty soon. But, you know, tragically, many other religions, including what the Protestants considered their primary competition or adversary, Catholicism didn't do that. Did you ever hear of Galileo? Well, you know, Galileo had to fall on his knees to avoid a papal death sentence, signing with his own hand the retraction, quote, I abjure, curse, detest the error and heresy of the motion of the earth. Now Galileo was just an astronomer, and he was studying what was going on out there, and and he came to the conclusion that the earth moves.
Pope said, no. It don't. No. Don't. And if you don't recant this heresy, we're gonna kill you. And this was verified by five cardinals. And, so, bible believing Americans were challenged to expand their horizons by such scriptures as Proverbs ten fourteen. Wise men lay up knowledge. And verses like Proverbs twenty four five, a man of knowledge increases strength. Pope Gregory the sixteenth was admonishing the faithful on 08/15/1832. Here's what he said. Quote, if the holy church so requires, let us sacrifice our own opinions, our knowledge, our intelligence, the splendid dreams of our imagination, and the most sublime attainments of the human understanding.
So in other words, suppress it all if the church tells you to. Wait a second. Hold on a second. That Bible says knowing God, trusting God, believing God will give you insight, and God will give you information into things and revelation you have never experienced. And I believe that to be so. I believe that to be true. All you have to do is study the prosperity of America. Righteousness exalted the nation. Righteousness exalted a nation. Again, the Lord was obligated by his own word to reward these soul winning evangelistic efforts that were taking place all across this country. Now America, and we talked about a couple of these, but America has been privileged to see four revivals.
Four revivals. And like I said, we've we've already talked about a couple of them, but, you know, we got a couple to go yet down here in the future, but these revi these revivals incited a phenomenal interest in the things of the word of God. Now the question today is, will we ever have another one? Honestly, I don't know. I don't know. But but but but think back with me during the colonial era. You know, manufacturing was pretty much not an issue in America. We manufactured very little in the colonial days. You know what happened? England, who was dominating us in the colonial times, prior to the revolution said this. They said America is purely for the purpose of providing raw material, and the raw material is to be shipped on English ships back to England, and all the manufacturing took place in England.
And then they manufactured it, and they sent it back to us and sold it to us. Alright. So after the war, England said, okay. You're gonna pay the price now. We're just gonna cut you off. You're on your own. We're not gonna sell you anything. And so Americans had to become rather ingenious. And, and and the term was initiated at that particular point in our history, jack of all trades. I'm sure you've heard that. You know? And you think about it, Americans have have historically been been pretty ingenious in coming up with stuff. Amen? You know? And when I say Americans, I'm talking about Americans of all kinds, all ethnic backgrounds.
I'm talking about I'm talking about black, yellow, white, purple, green, blue, red, you know, got you know, God is no respecter of persons. What God blesses is those that honor his word. Now here's some here's some amazing things. So America went through a time after the revolution where they were they they were hurting. You know? They were hurting. They had very little goods. England refused to send manufacturers good manufactured goods back, and so America had to figure out, okay. Well, how do you make this stuff? You know? How do you do this?
You know, when you when you when you're doing without, you can produce great things. You know, I'm amazed. I you know? And I don't I don't watch them much, but, you know, you have these young couples on TV looking for a house. Right? You know, they're in their late twenties, early thirties, and they want this million dollar house, and and it has to have granite, and it has to have this, and it has to have that. You know? And I'm thinking, you gotta be kidding me, man. Where in the world did this entitlement mentality come from? You know, it really it just blows your mind.
It blows your mind. You know, they want what what's taken mom and dad forty, fifty years to accumulate, and they want it right now, this minute. It's a strange thing. See, it's it's it's it's a strange thing. To do without produces great things. No question about it. Well, you know, a young nation of rugged individualists began to harness the doctrine of soul liberty soul liberty, and that's what we as bible that's what we believe as bible believers. You know, we're taking we're we're we're we're talking of sole liberty in relation to their goods and services. Well, the old world soon took notice of a new and emerging dynamo known as Yankee ingenuity.
You've heard that. All of a sudden, Yankee ingenuity began to really get ahead of get ahead of steam going. You see? And once again, we're reminded righteousness exalted a nation. You know, Ben Franklin and, you know, and and he was way back there, you know, and he and he he gave us, a vocabulary of electrical terms. Ben Franklin gave us this vocabulary, you know, battery, battery condenser, conductor, charge, discharge, armature, electric shock, electrician, positive, negative electricity, you know, concepts of plus and minus charge. All of that came from Ben Franklin.
Wow. Just think about that. Wilson writes this, quote, the true story of Franklin's work on lighting is further proof of his superiority to all other eighteenth century electricians. For almost half a century before him, men had been suggesting the identity of lightning and the an electric spark. However, no one had ever worked out the means of proving it. Franklin not only suggested an actual experiment, but he was able to explain lightning in rational terms and not as an awesome supernatural manifestation. He could actually explain it.
Quote, even at the age of 83, this long time scientific contributor was was working at it. You know what? At age, you know, at age 83, he said, I'm getting tired of changing my glasses. I gotta have one pair to see out there. You know, I gotta have one pair to see up close. I gotta have one pair to see further out there. So what did he do? He invented bifocals. How many of you got those? I have them. I had the no line ones, but I got them. Well, let me tell you about some other things. Oh, and by the way, Ben Franklin created that bifocal in 1784. Progressive lens. That's what it is. Gotta think for a second.
Progressive lenses. So 1784, he created the bifocal. Three years later, John Fitch gave us a steamboat, and then Robert Fulton Claremont improved the same in eighteen o seven. Eli Whitney invented the cotton gin in 1793, The world's first factory to convert raw cotton into cloth by powered machinery within the walls of a single building was begun in Waltham, Massachusetts in 1814 by the Boston Manufacturing Company. John Henry, excuse me, Joseph Henry was credited for, in 1831 for his discovery of electrical induction and the principle of induced current. An accomplished American artist by the name of Samuel F. B. Morse perfected the Morse code.
In 1838 and in 1844, he strung a test line of 40 miles between Washington and Baltimore for the nation's first telegraph service with the initial message. The first words to come across the telegraph were what hath God wrought. First words. The first words. In a conversation with professor Morris, inventor of the telegraph, the reverend George w Hervey asked this question. He said, quote, professor Morris, when you were making your experiments in your room in the in in the university, did you ever come to a stand not did you ever come to a stand not knowing what to do next?
Oh, yes. More than once, he said. And at said times, what did you do next? I may answer you in confidence, sir, said the professor, but it is a matter which the public knows nothing. I prayed for more light. And the light generally came? Yes. And may I tell you that when the flattering honors came to me from America and Europe on account of the of the invention which bears my name, I never felt I deserved them. I had made a valuable application of electricity, not because I was superior to other men, but solely because God, who meant it for mankind, must reveal it to someone and was pleased to reveal it to me.
Wow. You know, when you look at it from that perspective, it's not surprising that the inventor's first message was, what hath God wrought? You see, God and the very idea and concept of God was so intertwined into the thinking of these people that God was obligated to honor his word. Righteousness exalte the nation. America's steam original steam locomotive was built by John Stevens in 1825, while Peter Cooper produced a more practical engine in 1830 known as the Tom Thumb. For the first time since the Garden of Eden, men can now travel faster than 18 to 22 miles a day.
The age of running to and fro from Daniel twelve four was inaugurated in America a mere fifty years, just fifty years after the constitution was signed. Now God didn't say don't don't misunderstand. You know? What what I mean is, you know, God didn't say that running to and fro would would all be bad. He just said it would be that way, and boy is it. Have you ever been to a major airport? I'm sure you have. John Deere. John Deere invented the steel plow in 1833 and Silas McCormick, the reaper, in 1847. Charles Goodyear gave us vulcanized rubber in 1839.
An American physician, doctor Crawford Long, introduced anesthesia into the medical community in 1846 while Elias Howell invented the world's first sewing machine the same year. This marvelous forward motion continued through the second half of the century as well. Hammond and Davis refrigerated a boxcar in 1867. Glenn and barbed wire in 1874, the first typewriter in 1873 by Scholes, Glidden, and Sewell. In 1872 1872, the air brake by by Westinghouse, Bell's telephone +1 876, and the amazing contribution of Thomas Edison who was sent home sent home by his teacher at age six with a note that said, this child is too stupid to learn.
You know, there's a little phrase in your Bible periodically that I just absolutely love. I absolutely love it. It just says, but god. But god. Well, you know about Thomas. Right? I hope you do. The phonograph in 1877, the incandescent lamp in 1879, the motion picture in 1889, just to name a few. But interestingly, here's something you may not know. You probably knew all of that, but but Edison, whose family attended a Baptist church in Lewellen, New Jersey, was able to see the bigger picture. Here's what Edison said, quote, he said, no one can study chemistry and see the wonderful way in which certain elements combined combined with the nicety of the most delicate machine ever invented and not come to the inevitable conclusion that there is a big engineer who is running this universe.
That was his conclusion. The horse's carriage in 1895 closed out the nineteenth century with the incredible flying machine of Kitty Hawk in nineteen o three that inaugurated the twentieth. Alright? Now, folks, name another nation. Any nation that has made those kind of contributions. Not one. There is none. And, you know, I've only named a few of them. I mean, that's just a handful. But you know what the genesis of all that is? It's this bible and a belief in that bible and the people that were willing to be proactive in regard to the admonitions and commandments of that bible.
But perhaps one of the greatest contributions America has ever made is America is the first country in the world, the first country in the world, where you could generally, no matter where you are, depend upon clean water, drinkable water. I would say that's pretty essential, wouldn't you? Doctor Tan says this, at present, quote, at present, impure impure water, not scarcity of water, is the world's major hazard. Each year, ten million deaths result from waterborne intestinal diseases, and over one third of humanity are debilitated as a result of impure water.
A pure water supply could slash the incidences of cholera, diarrhea, dysentery, and typhoid up to seventy five percent. About $21,000,000,000 were pledged by the family of nations between by the family of nations between 1977 and 1980 to provide safe water. But the World Bank estimates that estimates that it would take about twice that to twice that sum to eliminate most of the Earth's water problem. America came up with safe water. America was the pioneer in good water, and civilized nations around the world have now come to utilize those techniques and simply adopted plans that came from this country.
This country. What hath God wrought? Folks, this Bible will broaden all kinds of things, not just spiritual senses, but intellectual senses, in science and every other way. God is not anti science. No matter what they tell you in school, God is not anti science. God is pro science. He's pro science. All God says, though, about science is to be careful about science falsely so called. You know, Hezekiah in your Bible was a scientist. Solomon was a scientist. Some of the great personalities in the Bible were scientists, and God showed them things. You You know, I personally believe that there's a cure for every disease that's out there, and God knows what it is. God knows what it is. And in the millennium, he's gonna show us.
He's gonna show us. What hath God wrought? Well, righteousness exalted the nation. Now you can see a direct correlation there, can't you? As righteousness diminishes in this nation, so does the influence we have on the world stage. So does its ability to tackle its own problems. Righteousness exalted the nation, and that comes from a people that believe God's word. Heavenly father, we wanna thank you for today. Thank you for the teaching of your word. Lord, thank you for this lesson throughout history. God, help us to find our righteousness once again so that you may once again exalt this nation.
