In this episode of The Joe Rooz Show, Joe dives into a discussion on the spiritual side of American heritage, focusing on the post-constitution era and the westward expansion. He reflects on the spiritual influences of early American leaders like George Washington and John Adams, and their belief in the role of religion and morality in the nation's prosperity. Joe also touches on the challenges posed by the introduction of various cults and doctrines during America's expansion, emphasizing the importance of staying true to biblical teachings. He highlights the role of circuit-riding preachers in spreading Christianity during America's early expansion and discusses the impact of Calvinism and other doctrines on evangelism.

So, folks, Ezra healing. Ezra healing is a substantial part of the new wellness paradigm currently being born in North America and, of course, around the globe. The global citizenry are no longer satisfied with the sick care version of so called health care. Band aid medicine, endlessly treating symptoms rather than root causes, must be abandoned as soon as possible. Patient centric care must be the priority, and we need to transition towards the do no harm model of private care that places humanity at the forefront of real health and wellness care. In this new model, your entire lifestyle is examined and analyzed to promote and support the totality of your body's integrated systems. Ezra Healing is a solutions based health promotion and disease prevention grassroots movement that is always evolving to best serve you and your family. And if you haven't checked them out yet, maybe you should. Head on over to ezrahealing.com.
That's ezrahealing.com. And when you get there, make sure you let them know you heard it here on the Joe Russo. Let them know their money is being well spent. Very well spent. Alright. Well, I am glad that everybody's here tonight. I'm glad that, I see the folks listening up there on the audio channels, and I see the folks listening up, watching up on on Rumble. Thank you so much for being here with us on Twitch, on Locals. Thank you so much. Really appreciate you spending your night with us, for your for a bible study night. This is fantastic. So, but, you know, I guess I guess we need to launch this ship. Right? And, and, get this thing started. Alright?
Father in Heaven, you have blessed us exceedingly. You have blessed us exceedingly, Heavenly Father. And we acknowledge how good you've been to us, and we acknowledge that all goodness comes from above. Lord, I pray as we study tonight that you would open our minds, open up our hearts to thus sayeth the lord, both in history, and for what we're gonna examine, as well as the scriptures. Father, we thank you for giving us the liberty that we've enjoyed. We thank you for those that have gone before us that had the foresight and the spiritual fortitude to establish a lot of the things, way back there. Two hundred plus years ago that have leapfrogged down through the decades to benefit us. Lord, of course, we do have some concerns because we see this country slipping down a very, very slippery slope in the in the absolute wrong direction. God, we really cannot blame anybody but ourselves.
We certainly can't blame you because you were so frequently reminding ancient Israel that as long as their obedience was there, your blessings would be there, and the same principle has been applied to America. Lord, disobedience is rampant. Father, I pray that somehow, God be at your will and your direction that some kind of revival might come to this country. But in the meantime, help us as your people to be faithful, and we'll thank you for it. In Jesus name, amen. Alright. Well, let's see. So we've kind of walked through this series on the spiritual side of the American of our American heritage and the American Revolution. So, we've walked through the events that led up to the revolution, and we talked about some of the major events of that particular conflict. We talked about Lexington. We talked about Concord.
We talked about, Bunker Hill, Breed's Hill, Trenton, the Declaration of Independence, the Constitution, the First Amendment, the Second Amendment. So then the question is, what happened after that? After all that was stuff was kinda cemented together and and sealed, what happened after that? You know, some of our forefathers, even even though, even though they may not have had a total comprehension of of what was going on, I think they had a premonition. And that premonition helped them understand that God must have a special and unusual design in his mind for America. Now, some some folks called that manifest destiny, and you might remember that from your your school days. I remember that. That was one of the few things that taught us an an act accurate American history.
Manifest destiny was a term that was utilized, way back then. And it and it's important, that, it's important for us to understand that they had some kind of comprehension that, that that the very creation and establishment of America was gonna play a larger picture in the framework of world events than any of them could possibly have imagined, or even comprehended. For example, George Washington. Methylene blue, babe. For example, George Washington. He said this, quote, of all the dispositions and habits which lead to political prosperity, religion and morality are indispensable supports.
Think about that. Think about what he just said. Can you imagine a modern day president saying that? Well, that's what George said. Quote, in vain, would that man claim the tribute to patriotism who should labor to subvert these great pillars of human happiness, these firmest props of the duties of men and citizens, the mere politician, equally with the pious man, ought to respect and cherish them. Now, if you don't understand colonial language, what what the guy was saying was, what what George was saying was, if you didn't understand these things, and embrace religion and morality, then you're not a patriot.
Think about that. That sounds pretty politically incorrect to me, and you know, we don't shy away from that here on this show, so we say it as it is. But that sounds pretty politically incorrect. He goes on, It is substantially true that virtue or morality is a necessary spring of popular government. The rule indeed extends with more or less force to each species of free government. Who that is a sincere friend to it can look with indifference upon attempts to shake the foundation of the fabric. So George Washington had a firm belief that religion and morality was, a very necessary cornerstone of a successful nation and a and a successful government.
And of course, you know, we spent a lot of time talking about, George and and, John Gano, who baptized him, the pastor of the First Baptist Church of New York City, baptized him in the Hudson River. We talked about that. We talked about all the eyewitness accounts to that that that kind of refute what modern history is trying to, to to spin on us now. But, when when when Washington declined to run for a third term, because you you know they wanted to make him a king. Right? And and and he he rejected that notion entirely. He said, that is not what this nation is all about.
That would just lead right back to, the tyranny that we just fought to leave. You know, so they said, well, would you run for third for a third term as president? And, and he said, no. He said, no. Two's enough. Two is enough. And so then, his vice president, John Adams, narrowly defeated the Republican challenger. And, do you know who the Republican challenger was? Thomas Jefferson. That's right. Thomas Jefferson. And, he beat Thomas Jefferson by three. That's it. Just three electoral votes. But president Adams was another early leader who often spoke of the very necessary role of the Christian faith in our nation, with reference to a greater heavenly purpose for America's existence.
And listen to what he wrote. Quote, I always consider the settlement of America with reverence and wonder as the opening of a grand, scene and design in Providence for the illumination of the ignorant and the emancipation of the slavish part of mankind all over the Earth. Now that sounds a lot of very, you know, almost like Shakespearean language. But if you understood how those guys wrote in those days, and and the and the total context in which he's writing, when he says providence, he's talking about God. When he talks about illumination, he's talking about illumination from the scriptures.
When he's talking about emancipation from the slavish part of mankind, he's talking about the new birth. Those are the things that he's making reference to. And he but he's just doing it in a very sophisticated language that that today would frequently be misunderstood, or probably not understood at all. Well, following Adams then, of course, Thomas Jefferson was finally elected as president, and, that's when the nation really began to expand geographically. In eighteen o three, do you know what happened in eighteen o three? That was a very that was very significant to the future of this country.
The Louisiana Purchase. Louisiana Purchase. And as a result of their Louisiana Purchase, did did you know that they they they they bought that land for only 3¢ an acre? Could you imagine that? 3¢ an acre. So, the Louisiana Purchase eventually, eventuated in 13 more states as a result of that of that purchase. And, of course, you know, a lot of people, you know, criticized it. They paid Napoleon $15,000,000 for for all of his American holdings. That was a really, realistically speaking, that was a brilliant strategy because what that did was that opened up the West.
That opened up the West. All the people in America were really pretty much, congregated on the Eastern Coastal Colonies. You know, all up and down the East Coast from from Florida to to New England. Alright. Now what that did was that opened up transits and highways across the Allegheny Mountains. And then in the West, and and in those days, not these days, but but in those days, the West was Kentucky, Tennessee, Ohio. You know, that was the West. Well, it opened up, and, before long, a million people. A million people out of 3,000,000 had migrated west, and then began to colonize those particular states.
So, so what was added? What was added? And, you know, not all of this was as a result of Louisiana Purchase, but but a great deal of it was. But from 1790 to 1820, during those thirty years, Vermont, Kentucky, Tennessee, Ohio, Louisiana, Indiana, Mississippi, Illinois, Alabama, and Maine were all added to the list of states. And so, so in thirty years, it was just an, a phenomenal expansion that was taking place. And and and this was all the way before Horace Greeley said in 1851, you know, go west, young man. Go west. Well, with this great expansion taking place, you know, the devil is not stupid.
He is not stupid one iota. And he could see the the the the great potential of this nation in its development stage. And so what he did is he introduced a lot of different factors to try to to try to, what's the word I'm looking for? I guess, to try to slow things down. I I guess, that would be the best way to to say it. To try to slow things down. Now, not necessarily in the geographical part of it, but at least in the spiritual part of it. Because as a result of it, prior to and immediately following the revolutionary conflict, there was there was a phenomenal spiritual influence in emphasis that was belabored by a lot of our leaders like Adams and Washington and, and just even to some degree, Jefferson as well.
And of course, you know, we talked about in in in in recent lessons about how many chaplains the Continental Army employed, and and Washington was absolutely adamant about having chaplains, bible believing chaplains, for the benefit of that army and in that conflict. And why? Why? There was a spiritual tenor, and a spiritual attitude in America that they felt was very necessary for them to win, and to succeed in what they were doing. Now, now during this period of time, between 1790 and 1820, in those thirty years, Louisiana Purchase, new states were being added and so on, but the devil wasn't asleep.
The devil wasn't asleep. Now, let let me just back up for a second here. Let me just also adjust this here because I'm getting some feedback. So let me take a look here. We'll get this squared away. Do you guys hear that? It sounds like a little bit of a pock a popping sound. Is anybody else getting that? Alright. Well, I think I got it. Okay. Clear that. So like we were saying, the devil wasn't asleep. Now, I'm I'm just gonna back up for one second here, and I'm just gonna, and I'm just gonna say this. You know, folks, Satan doesn't care if you go to church or not.
Okay. He he he really doesn't care. He didn't care. Satan doesn't care if you're religious or not. Alright. That's not the issue. Do you know what the issue with with him is? Souls. Souls. All of his primary motive is to detract from and water down and eliminate, if possible, all evangelistic efforts. Now you might be saying, why is that? Well, because he's a murderer and a liar from the beginning. He knows he's going to hell, and he wants to take as many people there as he can with him. That's that's just the bottom line of it. So there was a spirit of evangelism that had that had really cropped up in in in various places during those years, and he's doing what he can to squelch that spirit of evangelism.
Tragically, unfortunately, that's the fight that we have. It's a fight that we that we fought regularly, periodically, you know, all the time, basically. You know, and I was just thinking about this the other day actually. The thought occurred to me that over the years that I I've I've been in ministry, or or close to ministry, you know, I've encountered countless people, and periodically they have questions. Okay. Fine. That's great. What questions do you have? And people have questions about, well, you know, what's your church polity? And, you know, by that, it what that basically means is, you know, how's your church structured? You know, how's it set up? You know, you have deacons, you have trustees, you have, you know, you have this, you have that, And and and, you know, how does all that stuff work? That that's church polity.
Alright? And that's fine. That's it's not a bad question to ask. I'm I'm happy to answer those questions. Some people ask questions about, well, what's your financial structure like? You know, how does that work? Okay. Well, I'm I'm glad to answer that question also. Some people will ask, you know, what kind of children's programs do you have? You know, a lot of people are concerned about that. They wanna know, what kind of programs you have for kids. Okay. Great. But, you know, in in the in the twenty five years that I've served in a ministry or I've been close to to a ministry, I can't think of one time where anybody who visited a church that I was attending in, or involved with, or or preaching in, that said, I'd like to ask you a question. Well, what's that?
What are you doing to win souls? Not once. Not once. You know, they wanna know about all the other stuff, but they never ask about, what are you doing to win souls? I mean folks, isn't that the very existent, the purpose of our existence? Isn't that why we should be here? You see, so just by virtue of the lack of of of that question, you can see that in the minds and hearts of most Christians, that's not a top priority. It's not a top priority, and it's not. And I and I suppose that, you know, maybe three or four times I've been asked, you know, what would he do for missions? But But that's not a regular question either.
You know, it's it's just not something people think about. It's not something that most people are are even really entertaining at this period of time in our in our American history. There was some serious depletion in the ranks of Christianity, and as far as it's gone, it it it goes like a roller coaster. You know, it hits a peak and then it slides all the way back down, and then, and and then shortly after the revolutionary war, and the constitution went so off, it it it it took a a a pretty big backward step. For example, James Freeman planted the Unitarian banner in New England, with the American Unitarian Association being formed in 1825.
Well, do you know what the Unitarians believe? Well, Unitarians says that, well, you can believe anything you wanna believe. You can believe whatever you want. They have no real concrete prescribed doctrine, but they were established in New England. You know, many of the colleges were in serious trouble at that time. Writing of Yale in one of the old historians, Hartman says this, quote, Christianity was dead at one had once Christianity was dead at one had once been since grandest, proudest Connecticut fortress. Doctor Ashbel Green, who enrolled in Princeton in 1782 wrote this, while I was a member of the college, there were but two professions of religion among the students and not more than five or six who scuffled the use of profane language and common conversation.
So in other words, what he's saying here is that, you know, they all just liked to curse like a bunch of sailors. Alright. Now, that was an institution that, you know, not all that long before had been a very proud institution of training preachers and missionaries. Downhill. You see? Downhill. So much of this spiritual deterioration that was that was taking place was attributable to the atheistic writings of Thomas Paine. And, particularly his book, The The Age of Reason. The Age of Reason. And so, Thomas Paine wrote about how that reason ought to be wrote about how how that reason ought to be exalted above everything else.
It ought to be exalted even above scripture. And so, you know, God gave you, you know, he didn't he he actually didn't deny the existence of God, actually. He was a little more theistic than atheistic. But what he said was, is God gave you a brain, and and therefore your brain is what should be at the top of the heap. You know something, folks, I got I got news for you. Your brain ain't that great. Amen? Thus sayeth the Lord ought to be at the top of the heap. You know, and sometimes my reason doesn't always match with that book. Well then, if that's the case, then I better go with the book.
Ethan Allen, Not to be confused with the furniture place. But Ethan Allen wrote a 477 page book, attacking divine revelation entitled Reason, the only Oracle of Man. Now, you know, a lot of this was as a result of the French Revolution, and and it came over from France, you know, some of some of this stuff, and it was integrated into our society. But what these guys were doing was they were exalting reason. Now mankind, by his very nature, looks for opportunities to be exalted. That's just the nature of man. Alright? The sinful nature of man. You know, you you know, you kinda stick your chest out, and you get real proud like a peacock, and say, oh, aren't we something?
You know, it happens. It happens to the best of us. You know, you you stick your breast, you know, you you stick your chest out, you're, we're we're really smart. Look at what we have accomplished. Look what we have done. So all of that was in the mix. All of that was in the mix about that time. And then there were other key personalities involved in in in that, how do I I don't know how to phrase it. Well, there was there was a there was a man by the name of, Harry Dearborn, who was Jefferson's secretary of war. Let me let me go with that. Alright. Henry Dearborn, who was Jefferson's secretary of war, he he he was an avowed atheist.
And he said of America's churches, and now listen, here's what he said. This is a quote. So long as these temples stand, we cannot hope for good government. So as so long as these temples stand, we cannot hope for good gov Jefferson's secretary of war. That's what he said. General Charles Lee was was so violently opposed to the faith that that in his will, he stipulated that he'd not be buried in any church or churchyard, or within any within a mile of any Presbyterian or Anabaptist meeting house. He didn't wanna be anywhere around. And, of course, he was kind of a disloyal wretch who who who caused Washington an an awful lot of trouble.
If Washington hadn't had so much grace, he'd probably had him shot for treason. But you know what happened to that guy? He died a horrible death in a squalid Pennsylvania tavern. Think about that. So much for his religion. And so with America's new frontier going west, West of The Alleghenies, there was a lot of satanic challenges that had to be met. Alright. Now, let's let's fast forward here a little bit in our minds, just for a moment, out to the frontier. Alright. Again, Hartman, the great Hartman, the the the great old historian describes the rugged the rugged missions field of the frontier. And I'm I'm talking about Ohio, Kentucky, you know, you know, parts of Pennsylvania, Western New York, you know, Tennessee. Here's what he said.
Here's what he said. Because the awakening quote, because the awakening has not begun as yet, Sunday was used for hunting, fishing, horse racing, dancing, and anything else. Well, that sounds familiar, doesn't it? That certainly sounds familiar. On the whole, frontiersmen were a hardworking group. They were rough and ready in speech and patient with hypocrisy and ceremony and conditioned the severe situations with toughness. Their entire lives were simple and direct. Hunters might be seen with their long rifles over their shoulders, perhaps some small game hung from their belts, and a pack of, beardogs yelping after them. The day would be spent hunting or at work on the farm at hunting or at work on the farm, and the evenings given a storytelling interspersed with the consumption of hard liquor. For the most part, the frontiersmen were not determined against Christianity, but they had been in something of a moral and spiritual vacuum since they're moving to the frontier and leaving the churches behind.
Meaning, the pioneers had some knowledge, however, inadequate of Christian teaching. But on the frontier, to that time, the spiritual life was not cultivated. Bibles and other literature in the rude homes were few, and worship services fewer yet. Alright? So so that was life on the frontier. That was life on the frontier. Now now, of course, what happened on the trail, you know, on on the tail of all of that, all of a sudden was the introduction of of some pretty good things. You know, when you really study history, it's all it's almost like the devil and God playing chess. When you really study it, and isn't that what the book Job is all about?
You know, the devil says, alright, well, here's my move. Okay. God says, here's mine. Well, what was God's move? What was God's move? We call them circuit riding preachers. Alright. Now, the two groups that were most prevalent in sending circuit riding preachers to the frontier were the Baptists and the Methodists. Now, there was a sprinkling of Presbyterians in there, and and and others, but but the but really the two primary groups were the Baptists and the Methodists. They were sending out circuit riding preachers, and and they were a tough bunch. They were a tough front bunch. One of my favorites, was, and and I may have mentioned them to you before, but if I haven't, I'm I'm going to.
Not tonight though. But, Peter Cartwright. Alright. Peter Cartwright, he was one of those old circuit riding preachers, and and man, you wanna talk about a tough dude? This guy was tough. He was tough. And I'm just gonna give you one example, okay, because I love it. It's one of my favorite stories. On on one occasion, in in a in a in a in a he was told in a town that, he was heading to preach a meeting there for, that there was a big brawler, you know, and and he and he was tougher than than you could possibly imagine. And, and he made a statement that and he said that when Cartwright got to town, he was just gonna beat the snot out of him.
And Cartwright said, oh, really? Now he's a tough old frontiersman. So he got to he gets to town, he he marched into the tavern, he grabbed the guy, threw him on the floor, and just started beating him. Just literally beat the stuffing out of him. He didn't say yes. He didn't say no. No apology. Nothing. That's just what he did. And then he stood over him, and with an open Bible, he preached to him. Now I don't know if I'm I'm I'm not sure I'm really advocating that method, but that was Peter Cartwright. That's the kind of people that we're talking about.
You know, as as far as some of these circuit riders go, they were incredible, incredible men. Well, so the devil says, okay, it's my move. The Lord introduces circuit riders, the devil says, okay, it's my move. Well, what was his next move? It was the introduction of all these cults and bad doctrine. You know, the devil knows that that's a winner. Man, that's a winner. So in 1810, you had the introduction of cannibalism. In 1831, you had Mormonism. 1844, Seventh day Adventism. 1872, Russellism. Also, what we know today as Jehovah's Witnesses. See, all of that was introduced in that time frame. And when you really grasp that, you could say, okay, well, I I I can see where it's going, you know, here, you know, tit for tat.
And there's a reason for that, which we which we don't really have time to explain tonight, but, we'll we'll get into that in the future. But, I wanna talk more in the future about some of those circuit riding preachers, and and we're gonna do that, and and and some of the revivals that America's experienced. You know, America America is the only nation in the world with the exception of ancient Israel, clear back in the old testament, the only nation in the world that's experienced four major revivals. Four.
You know what that says? To me, that says God is merciful. God is a manifest destiny in mind for this country. He had a plan. He had a program. You see, he he was determined that it was gonna be fulfilled. And one of the worst doctrines to probably be introduced was, because it wasn't a brand new cult, it was it was a doctrine that really proliferated a lot of existing churches and groups and denominations and thought. I'm not gonna dwell on it too long though, but, I'm gonna finish the lesson tonight with just kinda helping you understand a little bit about this. And and we're gonna open up our bibles here in a minute. We're gonna search the whole thing out. But, this is what many people have referred to as Calvinism. Alright? You've heard it. Alright? You've you know people who are Calvinists. I know people who are Calvinists. It's a sad bunch, to be honest with you.
It's a sad bunch. Now Calvinism has been around, for for a long time, and it goes all the way back to a guy by the name of John Calvin, who was one of the so called, you know, quote unquote reformers back in the days of Luther and Zwingli and, you know, and those guys. But but Calvin came up with some, pretty hairballed theology, and the guy was meaner than a snake. I mean, he he was a mean, mean guy. I am not exaggerating. You know, he he had a fellow minister because because they disagreed on doctrine, a guy by the name of Servitus burned at the stake.
Did you know that? And and did you know that he also ordered a 15 year old girl beheaded because she slapped her mother? Yeah. That was John Calvin. That was John Calvin. So to me, it's kind of amazing when, you know, that that anyone would would would cling to any theology that that he put out. But they have, and they do. Calvinism has has invaded a lot of different groups and churches over the years. Now, the reason why I'm gonna lay this out to you just a just a little bit is just to illustrate how Satan has used bad doctrine to stifle evangelism.
Okay? Again, what's the heartbeat of God? God is not willing that any should perish, but that all should come to repentance. Isn't that right? For God so loved the what? Not the few, but the world. You see? That's the heartbeat of God. Alright? So so Satan says, if I can find a way to substantially stifle that, I will. And he knows that bad doctrine is is one of the one of the most, I guess, successful tools in his arsenal. You know how you know how he he he knows that goes all the way back to the garden. It goes all the way back to, yea, hath God said. Do you remember that? That's bad doctrine.
That's bad doctrine, and so and so it moves forward from there. Well, what is Calvinism? What is Calvinism? And you know, for for a little while, I I I actually kinda hesitated, even bringing it up because, you know, most of you probably really don't know, and you're better off if you don't know. But then again, you might encounter somebody someday, and and, you know, I don't want you to get hoodwinked. But Calvinism basically teaches, and and this is it in a nutshell, that God decided in eternity past, way back before the garden, before Genesis one one, way back in eternity past, whom he would save, and who he would send to hell.
God made that decision back then, and so consequently, folks, if you're not part of the elect, you're doomed. You're doomed. And that's Calvin that's Calvinism in a nutshell. Alright? Now the the focus of debate is centered around the historical attempt to reconcile the sovereignty of God with the responsibility of man. Alright? That's the debate. Well, Calvin came up with this five point idea, and, it's patterned after a little word called, TULIP, T U L I P, TULIP. Alright? So what does that stand for? What does TULIP stand for?
Well, the t stands for total depravity. Total depravity. Calvin said that man is totally depraved. He is so totally depraved that he can't even make a decision with his own free will and volition to trust Jesus Christ. So salvation is essentially forced upon him. Well, Calvin didn't even have total depravity right. You know, I believe in total depravity. I'm sure you believe in total depravity. Well, it well, it's just in a looser sense of the word. But in the strictest sense of the word, no. And let me show you what I mean. Take your bibles now. I know you've been waiting with bated breath to get into your bibles. I know, I understand. Romans chapter four.
Okay. Romans chapter four. And, let me show you how a few of these things work out. You know, some people would say, well, you know, you know, you know, you're totally depraved. Well, yes. Yes, you are. You are. In that, you received a depraved bloodstream or depraved DNA. Wherefore, as by one man, sin entered into the world, and death by sin, and so death passed upon all men for that all have sinned. Alright? Isn't that Romans five twelve? That's Romans five twelve. Alright. So you received something from Adam that's been passed down from generation to generation.
Alright? Now, you were born with that DNA that's ultimately gonna manifest itself in sin. It's like this. A duck isn't hatched swimming, but he's hatched a swimmer. Okay. Does that make sense? So so his nature is gonna take into the water, and he's gonna swim. He's gonna abide by his nature. Right? A bird dog. A bird dog is not born pointing. He doesn't come out like that. You know, he doesn't come out, you know. But if you if but if you watch him in the kennel, and about nine or 10 old, you know what that that what the real bird dog is doing? Well, he's starting to watch those birds.
You can't teach him that. That's his that's that's an instinct. He's either got it, or he doesn't have it. He's not born pointing, but he's a pointer. You were not born sinning. Calvin said you were. You see, that's his brand of total depravity. You were born sinning. No, you weren't. You weren't. But you were born a sinner. You see that difference? That's, that's, your, propensity. Okay? We can say it that way. You have That's your propensity, and given the opportunity, you went that way, didn't you? So the ultimate outcome is for all have sinned and come short of the glory of God.
Alright? Now Romans chapter four and verse 15. Romans four and verse 15. Because the law worketh wrath, for where no law is, there is no transgression. Alright. You can't say that someone disobeyed the law or broke the law, if they don't see the law. Alright? You know, you you go to a church, and you see, you know, all those little terrors in the nurse in the nursery. Right? They don't see the law. They don't see the law. It hadn't dawned on them yet. Where there's no law, there's no transgression. So you're not held responsible for a law that you can't see. You know, I have a I have a guy I know back in New York who who who loves to duck hunt, duck hunt, you know, and, it's his passion. He loves it. He loves to go out there, spends his weekends out there with his dog, and, you know, just having a grand old time.
So, one morning, before light, he he took his dog. He loaded up the dog, the the decoys, all, you know, and all the shotgun, and, you know, just everything. It's in the back of his car back of his truck, and, and he's going out to the swamp to hunt ducks. Well, and and and as he's going there, he he went through an intersection. Right? He didn't normally go through, and it went and he went straight through it. Alright? So again, so this this is a way so he went through an intersection, he, it was an intersection he didn't normally go through, and he went straight on through it, and, unbeknownst to him, he ran a stop sign. Well, it just so happened that there was one of those Barney five types, you know, around the corner, and then, of course, you know, here he comes, you know, pulled him over, and gave him a ticket for for running a stop sign. My my friend was infuriated.
So after he got done duck hunting, he went back and he looked at the intersection, took some pictures at a variety of angles. He went to court and he laid out he laid them out on the judge's desk and he said, you cannot hold me responsible for running a stop sign that the county has allowed to be obscured by brush and trees. He's right. He's right. And the judge agreed with him. He said, I can't find you for that. Well, why not? Because the law was obscured. He couldn't see it. Now, when the county comes out with their with their chainsaw, and all of a sudden you can see the sign, it's a different story. Right?
It's a different story. You know? So, you know, those kids grow up, and then and pretty soon they see the sign. Alright. Different story. Alright. Now go to Romans chapter five. Romans in chapter five, and let's go to verse, 13. Romans five and verse 13. For until the law was in the world, but sin was not imputed where there is no law. So imputed simply means, put to, charge to one account charge to one's account. Alright? So you're not held responsible for sin. It's not charged to your account, you see? Until you have some consciousness of what it is.
And that you're violating your you're violating through your conscience, God's law. You know, it's it's it's, you know, people have asked me over the years, you know, well, what about children? Do, you know, do do children go to heaven when they die? Well, of course they do. Of course they do. Based on that principle that I just showed you. But what about people that are severely mentally handicapped? Same thing. The same thing. It's the same principle. They've never gotten to the point where they can see the law. It, it just, you know, it doesn't resonate in them.
Alright? Go to Romans chapter seven. Romans chapter seven in verse nine. Calvin said, from the time you draw your first breath, you are totally depraved. Well, in a sense, you know, that you're packing Adam's DNA, yeah, that's true. That's true. But in the same sense that God's gonna hold you responsible for sin, it's not true. It's not true. Alright? Romans chapter seven verse nine. For I was alive. Now now notice this is personalized. I, Paul, he says, For I was alive without the law once, but when the commandment came, sin revived and I died.
Said I was alive once. Well, what do you mean you were alive once, Paul? What does that mean? You're alive right now, writing a letter to the Romans. Dead men don't write letters. I was alive without the law once, but when the commandment came, sin revived, and I died. Sin revived, and I died. Alright? Now now think about children. Think about children. You know what their deal is? They're alive, spiritually speaking. Alright? Let me prove it to you. Do you remember what Adam and, what what God said to Adam and Eve? He said, and and the day that thou eatest thereof, thou shalt surely die. Right?
They ate, and spiritually, they died. And what did they immediately do? Well, they made themselves some aprons. Right? Of fig leaves. And they covered up their nakedness. Isn't that right? So you take that little three year old and and given the opportunity, he'll run right out into the middle of the street buck naked. Won't bother him. You know why? Because he doesn't have a conscience to affect that yet. Alright? When he does, then things change. Then the things change. Now, I was alive without the law once, and the commandment came. I had a comprehension, and an understanding of the of the commandments of God, and I willfully broke them anyway.
And at that particular moment, I died. Alright? That's the real Bible answer for total depravity. You see, folks, you have a free will. Alright. Free will is a Bible word. You find that over in, Ezra chapter seven and verse 13 and verse 16, and you read about a free will. In Exodus chapter 35, several times we're told that God gave Israel the opportunity to participate in the construction of the tabernacle by giving a free will offering. So in other words, they didn't have to. It wasn't mandated. It was up to them. Free will.
Free will. You have a free will to say yes or no to God. Alright? T, total depravity. Alright. U, unconditional election. Alright. That's what Calvin taught. Unconditional election. Stressing that God arbitrarily elected certain individuals to salvation without any relevant conditions whatsoever. And so that's what he came up with, unconditional election. God elected you. Well, the word elect is in the Bible, but boy man, he had to take out of some pretty serious context to come up with that one. So so God said, you know, way back about 90,000,000 ago, he said, you know what?
Someday someday old Walter's gonna be born. Walter hadn't even been thought of yet, but Walt's gonna be born. I like the name Walter, so that's why I picked it. But Walter's gonna be born, and, God says, you know, I kinda like the, you know, the name Walter too, and so I'm gonna I I I believe Walt's gonna be a gonna be part of the elect. How about that? But that's not what happened at all. That's not how that happens. Walter had to make his own decision about trusting Jesus Christ. Alright? Now now go with me to Romans chapter eight. Romans in chapter eight.
You're in seven. Just just flip the page over. You don't have far to go. Alright. Now now now here's here's the part I mean. I I I I mean, I can't give you a comprehensive lesson on this. We just don't have the time for it, and and you probably don't need it. But I I really, I just wanna show you a couple of things here. Right? But here's the part. Here's how they come. Here's how Calvin arrived at the conclusion of unconditional election. Okay? This is how Calvin came up to it. Romans chapter eight and verse 28. And we know that all things work together for good to them that love God, to them who are the called according to his purpose.
For whom he did foreknow, he also did predestinate to be conformed to the image of his son, that he might be the firstborn among many brethren. Moreover, whom he did predestinate, them he also called, and whom he called, them he also justified, and whom he justified, them he also glorified. Now, Calvin read those verses, and he said, well, that's it right there. Unconditional election. Well, it's unfortunate that mister Calvin didn't just go a little bit further. Remember, I've told you this many times already, a text without a context is a pretext. Alright? So go to chapter nine.
Chapter nine. Romans chapter nine. You see, if you come to the conclusion put up too soon, sorry. See, if if you can come to the conclusion that that that who will be saved will be saved, and who isn't isn't, and there's nothing you can do about it, then there's no incentive for soul winning. There's no incentive for for for evangelism. Right? You know, why in the world are we messing around with the Bible? Why why why are we teaching a Bible study, show on a podcast? You know what we're trying to do? We're trying to get the gospel in the hands and the hearts of some lost people. That's the whole idea of doing this show.
Alright. Now Romans chapter nine and, verse twenty twenty one. Romans nine twenty one, hath not the potter power over the clay of the same lump to make one vessel unto honor and another unto dishonor? What if God willing what if God willing to show his wrath and make his power known endured with much long suffering the vessels of wrath fitted to destruction? And that he might make known the riches of his glory on the vessels of mercy, which he had afore prepared unto glory. Now, it's interesting to, you know, totally unplanned, but my pastor today, a church preached on the on this particular subject of the vessels. Now in in relation to the context, you could see just at a casual glance, you know, you might come to the conclusion, you know, where it says God makes some vessels one way, he makes some vessels another way, And, you know, that's that's the sovereignty of God.
And that's that. And actually, I I have a sermon myself on this very thing. It did I might have just dust it off and preach it one day. But, but the the text is out of Jeremiah 18, and he and he talks about vessels. And God said to Jeremiah the prophet, he said, I want you to go down to the potter's house. I want you to watch what he's doing for a while. So Jeremiah immediately goes down to the potter's house, and and the potter, you know, he's got his wheel and, you know, and his little treadle device, and and and, you know, he's he's working that thing with his foot, and he's turning that wheel round and around and around and around, and he's taking that clay and bang, he's taking some water, and he's throwing some water out, and he's starting to form the vessel.
Alright. He's starting to form it, to shape it. See how that thing works? And in the Bible, there's lots of vessels. Lots of different kinds of vessels, and God said to Jeremiah, you see that vessel right there? Yeah. I see it, Lord. Well, you say to Israel, cannot I do with them like the potters making the vessel right there? Okay. Alright. I get it. I get it. And what probably one of the probably one of the best books that I've ever got my hands on outside of my bible is a book called Strange Scriptures That Perplexed the Western Mind. Strange Scriptures That Perplexed the Western Mind. It It was written by a woman, by the name of Barbara Bowen, who lived in The Middle East for, like, forty something years.
I don't know if it's still in print anymore, but you might find it on Amazon or eBay or something like that if you're really interested in it. Fascinating book. Fascinating book. And and she goes into considerable detail about about all the different vessels that they made. In the Bible, you find a vessel of honor. You find a vessel of dishonor. You find a vessel of wrath, a vessel of mercy. Right? And four of them are mentioned right here in the text that we just read, and all of them have their own significance. Alright? A vessel of wrath.
Here here we go. A vessel of wrath. Alright? You see there? God has predetermined in eternity past who would be a vessel of wrath, and who wouldn't be a vessel of wrath. Now she said now you go down to the potter's house. Again, now this woman has has that observed the culture of the of people of these people for for most of her life. She'd watched this thing and and realized that on a rare occasion, but still it exists. There there there's sometimes, you know, that's that's all the the the Greek and the Hebrew in the world won't help you with understanding that Bible, because you'd watch.
Just a little understanding of the culture will do more than any of the languages do, and this is one of those occasions. You go out to the potter's house, and every now and then, every now and then, the back door will fly open, and and and a vessel will come flying out the back door. Do you ever try to start a weed eater, and and, you know, you wanted to throw it out the back door? Well, every now and then, you gotta understand that that that the potter, he would make, you know, you know, people that never engaged in making anything with their hands, you know, you you realize it doesn't always happen perfectly. Sometimes there's mishaps.
Sometimes there's foul ups. Right? I mean, you know, there's this, you know, this thing doesn't go the way that you want it to go, or plan a didn't work out the way you planned on it, and well, the potter's no different than end, you know, you know, and every now and then, a vessel comes out that's not to his satisfaction. Particularly after he's fired it already. And you know what they do? They they build another vessel. Now I I don't know if that's the proper word, you know, build, but, for for vessel building, but but that's it. And and what they do is they they they put it in the kiln, and they fire it, and they they subject it to intense heat that tempers it, that makes it strong, that makes it available for utilitarian use, you see? Alright. But but every now and then, one of those vessels will come out with a crack in it, even after it's fired.
Well, in in bible days, they weren't building vessels just to hold dry flowers in the dining room table. Okay? They had to hold liquid. They had to be utilitarian. They had to be useful. And so we said, okay. I get it. I get it. And then, that's when it comes out with a crack in it, and and that's when the door opens up and crash on a big pile of broken pottery out there. You know what that potter would do? That potter would fastidiously work on that crack with a very, very sharp instrument. He wouldn't just throw it out. No.
He would take that vessel, and with that sharp instrument, he would clean up the edges. And then he would apply an epoxy glue that he made, and the glue was interestingly made from two components. Very interesting. Two components. Ground up pottery. You know, he'd go out, pick up some some old shreds of pottery and grind them up with the mortar and the pestle till they were just dust, and and, you know, he would grind that thing up into a fine dust. And the other ingredient was, of all things, blood. Blood. And he mixed those two things together, and that was his glue.
And he very patiently tried to fill that crack with that, and then put it back in the fire, Fire it again. Sometimes the glue would stick. Sometimes it wouldn't. Then he'd throw it out. Right? No. No. No. Start all over again. Sharp instrument. Work and work and work. Take the glue, apply it, stick it in. Missus Bowen said, sometimes they would do that nine or 10 times before they finally given up and throw it out. And then it was a vessel of wrath. Now I want you to get the application here. I want you to get the application of that, the the ground up clay. That's Mary.
That's the virgin Mary. That's humanity. The blood? That's the God element. Didn't Jesus Christ carry God's blood? Acts chapter 20 verse 28. Alright. So, you know what the Lord did? He made Jesus Christ God incarnate with humanity and deity, and he put those together. That's the glue that's gonna fix the chasm of sin that runs down through the very soul of every one of us. But he prepared it with a sharp instrument. The Bible says the word of God is quick and powerful and sharper than any two edged sword. The preparation is the sharp instrument, and then the glue is applied and the vessel is given an opportunity to receive it or reject it.
Not one, not two, but over, and over, and over again. You know, I didn't get saved the first time I heard the gospel, or the second, or the third. Then I'm glad God was patient. I'm glad he was merciful to me. See, I'm glad that he was the the the the the patient potter. And so you see, mister Calvin didn't understand all that. This whole principle. You see? He was just determined that that some people were predestinated before the foundation of the world to go to heaven, and conversely, some were predestinated to go to hell. Alright?
T u l, limited atonement. That's what the l stands for. Teaching that Christ died only for the elect. He didn't die for the lost. He only died for the saved. But folks, there's so many scriptures that say to the contrary to that. So many scriptures. First Timothy chapter two verse four. Who will have all men to be saved and come to the knowledge of the truth. Who gave himself a ramps a ransom for all to be testified of in due time. First Timothy two six. Not willing that any should perish, but that all should come to repentance. Second Peter three nine.
The lord is not slack concerning his promises. Son men count slackness, but his long suffering to us ward. Not willing that any should perish, but that all should come to repentance. Let me actually, let me show you one, and then, I want you to look up second Peter. Alright? And, and while you're looking that up, first Timothy chapter four verse 10. For therefore, we both labor and suffer reproach because we trust in the living God who is the savior of all men, especially those that believe. Or what about Hebrews chapter two verse nine?
But we see Jesus who was made a little lower than the angels for the suffering of death, crowned with glory and honor, that he, by the grace of God, should taste death for every man. And what about Romans five six? Romans five six. For when we were yet without strength, in due time, Christ died for the ungodly. And then, I mean, you you want the the icing on the cake. I mean, first John chapter two verse two says it all, where he says, and he is the propitiation for our sins, and not for ours only, but also for the sins of the whole world. That's pretty conclusive. Wouldn't you say?
But let me show you this one. This is this is a good one. This is a real good one if you're ever dealing with a Calvinist. Alright. Second Peter chapter two and, verse number one. But there were false prophets among the people even as they as there shall be false teachers among you, who privily shall bring in damnable heresies, even denying the lord that brought them in, and bring upon themselves their swift destruction. You see, Jesus even died for the false teachers and the heretics. Isn't that what the verse says? He died for everybody.
He's not willing that any should perish. So limited atonement? That's a joke, man. That won't fly. So now here's the problem. The the problem is not many Methodists bought into this, because they're Armenian in their theology, which is the opposite end of the spectrum. But some of the Baptists did. Not all, but some did, and some still do. Do you know you know what we call Baptists that buy into that today? We call them hard shell Baptists. You ever heard that term? Hard shell Baptists? They're Calvinists. Reformed churches, they're Calvinists. You might see, you know, the reformed church of this, and reformed church of that, whatever.
They're Calvinist. They're not evangelical. They're not even they're not evangelical, they're evangelistic. I'll get that word out someday. But you see, that's why their churches are dying. You know, a few a few people rambling around, and and they're all about 90, you know? Well, I guess we're just predestinated to hold on to the end. You know, nobody gets saved. You know what lends excitement and enthusiasm to the body of Christ? Birth. Birth. I mean, there's there's there's nothing more exciting than the new birth. Nothing.
Nothing. Alright. T u l, we're up to I. Alright? I in TULIP is irresistible grace. Alright? So on the other side of the spectrum, limited atonement, irresistible grace. So the idea is when it's your time to go, God says it's your time to get saved, you're gonna get saved, and, and and not a there's not a blasted thing you can do about it. Well, that's a joke, and we all know that's a joke. When it came time for you to trust Christ, you could have gone one of two directions. Isn't that right? You you could have you could have said no as easily as you said yes. Alright? Steven said this over in Acts chapter seven in verse 51 speaking to Israel.
You stiff necked and uncircumcised in heart and ears, you do always resist the Holy Ghost as your fathers did, so do ye. Alright. So you can resist. You can resist. Jesus said this in Matthew 23. The lord cried out to Jerusalem. He said, how often would I would have I gathered thy children together even as a hen gathereth her chickens under her wings, and ye would not. So in other words, they were given the opportunity, and they denied it. They were given the opportunity, and they rejected it. Alright. So, the last point of Calvinism is the preservation of the saints.
Now, you may or may not buy into that, you know, depending on how you interpret what he really meant by the preservation of the saints. But, you know, without going into long detail, you know, we believe in the preservation of saints. In that, we believe in the security of the believer. Alright? We believe, I believe that once you're part of the family, that's it. You're in the family. Now, you might say, you know, well, I decided I don't wanna be in the family. Okay. Good. Tell the lord that. He'll just give you a weapon, and the Lord, you know, the Lord chasteneth him whom he loveth. He'll just whoop up on you a little bit.
You're part of the family. The preservation of the saints. Alright. Now, exactly how Calvin meant that is debated, and and and it is to be determined. But we know what we believe. I know what I believe. I believe, we believe that God will preserve the saints, and a lot could be said about that. But so what happened was bad doctrine got introduced into a lot of the tenants of Christianity back then back then, in that age between 1790, 1820, 1830. And the church was in serious decline, and the devil said, I got you now. I got you the bad doctrine. And the Lord said, I don't think so.
I got another plan, and we're gonna talk about that next week. God's next move. Lord willing next week. Alright. Folks, this is the Joe Russo. This is our Bible study Sunday episode of the show.
