In this Sunday Bible Study edition, I walk through the final installment of our seven-week series on wisdom from Proverbs, focusing on the power of the tongue—how it can curse, lie, bare tales, talk too much, and speak too soon, and how, when surrendered to God, it can bring peace, offer wise reproof, deliver souls, teach the things of the Lord, and carry the gospel. We move briskly through dozens of Scripture references—from Proverbs, Jeremiah, James, Romans, and beyond—looking at real-life applications, everyday pitfalls, and practical ways to guard our speech and use our words for God’s glory. I also share updates on recent and upcoming show formats, invite your feedback and questions, and preview potential new series on Dispensations or Revelation starting next week. Wherever you’re listening, I pray this study helps us all bridle our tongues and build others up in truth and charity.
Resources and next steps: Read Proverbs 10–21; James 3; Romans 3; 1 Peter 4. Reflect on “a soft answer turneth away wrath” (Prov. 15:1) this week.
Share your takeaways or questions via the website contact form or comments, and let us know which series—Dispensations or Revelation—you’d like next.

We haven't, been together since, Thursday night when we had our show with, doctor Dave, And, that was, I I really enjoyed that show. I hope you guys were able to catch it. I hope you guys liked it. The, I know the audio downloads were really good on it. The video downloads are pretty decent too, so I appreciate everybody checking it out. But, if you haven't done it yet, go back and check it out. It's a really it's a good show. Doctor Dave is a just an overall wealth of information. And, I I don't know. I I I there's something about him. I just love talking to him. I I've learned so much from him just in these, these two shows that we did together. So, so I'm hoping you guys are able to go back and check it out at some point, if you haven't already. And, drop a comment. Let us know what you think about it.
Now, this coming week is gonna be an interesting week. We don't have very many guests lined up, so we're we're gonna actually get the opportunity to go back to, the old format that we we used to do, and talk politics, and some opinion, and some commentary, and so on and so forth. So kind of excited about doing that. A little nervous about doing that too, to be quite honest with you. Because, you know, I got so used to having guests on the show all the time. So it's it's like, you know, having somebody to talk to and to talk with is is a lot of fun. I enjoy that immensely. So, we'll see what happens. We'll we'll see how it goes. And and, Lord willing, we'll have some good, some good shows and, get back to the guests, very, very soon. But, we got we got some really good ones coming up too. So, you might wanna stick around and check those things out as we go forward. Now for the last, six weeks, so this is our last Sunday study on this particular subject. We've been studying wisdom on our Sunday afternoons, again, for the last six weeks. And, so this would be number seven, and it's a seven parts, study that we were doing. So, this will be the last one. And, we've been talking about wisdom, the book of Proverbs.
The book of Proverbs is a book of wisdom. And, over in Proverbs chapter number 21, in Proverbs number 20 chapter 21 and verse 23, whoso keepeth his mouth and his tongue keepeth his soul from troubles. Just think about that. Whoso keepeth his mouth and his tongue, keepeth his souls from troubles. Alright. Now that's a thought right there. That's a thought. Well, you know what we're gonna do this afternoon? We're gonna talk a little bit about that. You know, sometimes we we hear, a child say something, foolish, or or say a string of foolish things. And, you know, we kinda just, you know, push it off as, you know, you know, we recognize their immaturity, you know, their child. So we might say, well, you know, you know how it is. And but how often do adults actually fail to control their own tongue?
And, you know, I can't, you know, I can't emphasize enough how much we see that on the nightly news now. You know, some of these some of these politicians get on there, and and they're just acting like six year olds. I'm thinking about Schmucky, Schumer. You know, and of course, that's all just a violation of what God says. Alright? Now, and then there are several areas where the tongue can get us into trouble. Alright? It can mess with you. It can. It can absolutely mess with you. Now of course, before we get into that, we're gonna do some housekeeping stuff here. So if you would, head over to our website, joeroos.com.

Now, let's, let's take that bible and head over to Proverbs in chapter 30 for today. Proverbs in chapter number 30. Now, like I said, we've been in Proverbs now for, this is week seven. So you shouldn't have a problem finding Proverbs, but just in case. Just go to the middle of your bible. You'll find the book of Psalms, then turn one book over to your right. You'll get to the book of Proverbs, and you'll be all set. And then head over to Proverbs chapter 30 Proverbs chapter 30, and, head over to let's see. Proverbs chapter 30 and verse number, can't read my handwriting.
Verse number 11. Proverbs chapter 30 and verse number 11. There is a generation that curseth their father and doth not bless their mother. There's a generation that are pure in their own eyes and yet is not washed from their filthiness. There's a generation, oh, how lofty are their eyes and their eyelids are lifted up. There is a generation whose teeth are as swords and their jaw teeth as knives to devour the poor from off the earth, and the needy from among men. Our heavenly father, we wanna thank you for today. We wanna thank you, lord, for your book. We thank you, lord, for the word that you've given us. God, help us to use the wisdom that was contained here in and apply it to our daily lives, and we'll thank you for it in Jesus name. Amen.
Alright. So there's a generation. That's what the bible says. There's a generation. Now, this problem is not exclusively confined to young people by any stretch of the imagination. But, it seems like young people fall into a trap a little easier. They fall into the trap just a little bit easier, and, it's the trap of of cursing, according to the old testament. You know, cursing one's parents was considered a crime worthy of death. Alright. That's how serious God took it. Swearing was considered to be a source of pollution of the land. Alright. Go with me over to Jeremiah in chapter 23. Jeremiah chapter three. You're gonna go forward in your bible. It'll pass the book of Proverbs to Ecclesiastes, Song of Solomon, Isaiah, and then Jeremiah.
Jeremiah in chapter 23. I gotta turn that fan off over there if I can. I could find the remote because it is blowing the pages all over the place. Well, we'll just lower it down and see how that works. Alright. Jeremiah chapter 23. Alright. And, you know, where where is I said 23, so I'm in Jeremiah, Isaiah, Jeremiah. You know, and, I, I don't know about you. You'd you'd probably agree with me on this one, but, you know, I find it extremely irritating when when Hollywood produces a movie that is it has a potential of being a good movie, but they feel compelled to insert a ton of cursing into it.
You know, I've been watching I've been watching a lot of these old movies, from the fifties and sixties, you know, and just the difference in the in in the in the language, the in the forties, it was I I love watching old movies. What I what did I watch last night? I watched, the original Frankenstein. That was that was good. I I enjoyed that, you know? I I really did. But you didn't hear the cursing. There was no nudity. There was no no no no, you know, no no real violence in the movie. Yeah. There was some cheeky stuff, but, you know, nothing like it is today at all, you know? But today, they feel like they they just feel absolutely compelled to insert all of that stuff. The nudity, the sexual, the sexual content, the language, the cursing, the swearing, the blasphemy that that you hear throughout the whole thing, and it really it it serves absolutely no purpose, you know? It, it it it doesn't really accomplish anything, but they feel like they have to stick it in there, I guess, you know, for whatever reason there is.
I guess to appeal to the youth of the generation, I I don't know. Well, God says that it just absolutely pollutes the land. Alright. Now in Jeremiah chapter 23 and go over to verse 10, Jeremiah 23 verse 10, for the land is full of adulterers, for because of swearing, the land mourneth. The pleasant places of the wilderness are dried up, and their course is evil, and their force is not right. Alright? So there's something wrong with them. There's something wrong with them. They lose strength. The whole thing is polluted, you see? And that's because of bad mouths, and bad tongues, and bad thoughts, that that accompany all those things.
You know, I I, you know, I I've said to to more than one person over the years, you know, you you must have a very limited vocabulary if you keep repeating yourself. Now there was a guy that I worked with, back up in New York when when I was in uniform service, and I would get partnered up with him, from time to time. And, you know, we would, and we would have some conversations during the course of the shift, and about every third word out of the guy's mouth was a curse. So so one day I said to him and I was kind of a new Christian at the time. So, you know, I said to him once I said, okay, you know, that's enough.
You know, I said, you know, and and I can't really remember exactly what started the conversation, but but something to the effect of, you know, you must have gone to a really bad school. A real garbage school. And and I remember he looked at, he's like he goes, why do you think that? I said, because your vocabulary is so limited. He said, well, what what are you talking about? I said, every third word out of your mouth is a is a curse word. I I said, I'm glad you're I I'm glad you weren't the one writing the declaration of independence, you know, or, or the constitution of The United States or, you know, I I I preached to him for for a little sermon for about maybe five minutes. And and, and, you know, he did he didn't eliminate it, but he certainly curtailed it.
And, but you know what I noticed? Over the following weeks, anytime he would let out, like, this barrage of of of of of curse words, and all of a sudden he would stop. He would kinda look at me and apologize because he knew it was wrong. He knew it was wrong. He he knew that there was something wrong. You know, people can identify who you are and what you are a lot of times by what does or doesn't come out of your mouth. You know, I had a supervisor once, and, man, he had the foulest language ever. I mean, he was bad. He was bad. Other officers and I, you know, we used to hate to work with them, especially when he's been a when he was when he was in a bad mood, which is pretty much all the time.
And for some reason, he loved to assign me to be his driver. Now, in those day back in those day, I don't know if they still do it now if they're in New York, but but, a supervisor, a patrol supervisor had the benefit of having with the way of call a chauffeur. So, he would select a particular officer for the night, and that officer would have the responsibility of driving him around to check on posts and and, respond to respond to jobs and and on all that stuff. Well, one night he had me as, aside as his driver, and and about four hours into the night, I noticed that for some reason he just would not stop staring at me.
Just like just just staring at me and he and he had this, like, perplexed look on his face all the time. And so I asked him, I said, so what's wrong, Zard? And he goes, there's something strange about you. I'm like, well, you're not the first one to say that, you know, I said, but what's your point? He says, you don't curse. I said, now why do you think that is? Because you know, what I'm trying to do is I'm trying to play it cool here. I'm trying to, you know, just keep thing. Because, you know, if you come right out and tell people, you know, right up front in those circumstances and and start, you know, flinging bible verses at them, you know, sometimes you lose the opportunity, you know.
So he said, well, I don't know. So, I opened the door, you know, and I witnessed that guy for two hours that night. Two hours, and he just sat there, and he he took it all in, you know. He asked some questions, you know. It was a good conversation, and, you know, after that conversation, that guy cleaned up his language around me. Now sometimes what you say or what you don't say opens doors. Now what you do say, you know, we depend on greatly to open doors, but sometimes it's what you don't say. You know, what is cursing a sign of? What is cursing a sign of? Go over to first Samuel chapter 17.
First first Samuel chapter 17. So you're gonna go back in your bible to your to my left, your left. Right? Yeah. I get I get all confused. I'm sorry. But, you're gonna go back toward the front of your bible. You're gonna go to first Samuel. Alright. First Samuel what did I say? 17? First Samuel 17. Right? Oh, too far there. First Samuel 17. Right? Now now in this particular chapter, David it's it's a great chapter by the way. You should read this if you haven't already. This is a great chapter. And David goes out to meet the Philistine, Goliath.
Alright? And I'm sure we all know the story. You've I'm sure you've heard it. You know, if you spent any time anywhere near church, I'm sure you've heard the story David and Goliath. You know, but but but but here's an interesting part to the story. Alright? And you find it over in verse number 43. First Samuel 17 verse 43. And the Philistines said unto David, and the Philistine said unto David, am I a dog that thou comest to me with staves? And the Philistine cursed David by his gods. So the Philistine the Philistine, Goliath, is engaging himself in cursing, vile language, and he's thrusting all of these curses at David.
You see? Now now the the Philistine, of course, is is a is is a picture of, you know, the world. Worldly attitudes, worldly thoughts, worldly ideas. And so it's identification with the world is is what it really is. Identification with the world. But that's not all. Go over to the New Testament, the book of Mark in chapter 14. So you're gonna go over to your to your right well, to the back of the Bible. You're gonna go to the New Testament, Matthew, Mark, second book of your New Testament. Matthew, Mark. And you're gonna go to Mark chapter 14. Mark Mark chapter 14, and, it'll be verse 71. Now now now this is Peter.
Okay. This this is Peter, and and and, of course, you remember Peter, and, you know, the Lord's being tried here in this particular passage. Lord's being tried, and Peter's outside in the courtyard, and what's he doing? He's denying the Lord. And, it I mean, it really is when you read it, it's a it's a it's a very, very sad story. It's really it's a sad story. But in verse 71 of Mark chapter 14, but he began to curse and to swear saying, I know not this man of whom ye speak. I know not the man of whom ye speak. That's your first pope.
That's your first pope. Right? Catholic friends, that's your first pope. Alright? Now now you got it. Didn't you? The first pope was was was the first pope was cursing. He was denying the Lord. Isn't that what he's doing? Now, of course, you know, Peter repented of this. He got right, and, and and we all know that. And, you know, we're not gonna condemn him because he did get it right. He did get right with the Lord. So but, but you know what this is a picture of? This is this is a picture of a backslidden condition, and that's exactly what Peter was at that that's exactly where Peter was at that particular point in his life.
Alright? He he was he he was just as backslidden as he could possibly be. Alright? But that's not all. Go over to Romans in chapter 13, chapter three. I'm sorry. Romans chapter three. So you're gonna keep on going forward in your bible to Romans chapter three. So it's Matthew, Mark, Luke, John, Acts, and then Romans. You know, somebody asked me recently why do that? Why I I I read off the Bible, the books of the bible to you as we're turning there. And it's it's, you know, to help you get familiar with it. You know, some some people that are watching or listening right now may be new to this. They may be be new to a bible study.
They may not be adept at getting through the word of God. I know I wasn't when I first got saved. I had a hard time, and, you know, there's nothing wrong, by the way, with looking at the table of contents to find out where, you know, the books are, or if you're sitting with somebody at a church, or if you're having a bible study with somebody, you could ask them, hey, where do I find that? Nothing wrong with that whatsoever. I'd encourage you to do that. That's great. But I do it because I want I want you guys to be comfortable working your way through the bible, and, you know, sometimes I need the refresher too. You know, it's, it's it's always good to to to keep rehearsing these things over and over and over again in your head. You know, repetition, is is key to learning. So you wanna make sure you keep doing that. Alright. Romans chapter three, and, let's go to verse number 10.
Romans chapter three verse 10. As it is written, there is none righteous, no, not one. There is none that understandeth. There is none that seeketh after God. They are all gone out of the way. They are together become unprofitable. There is none that doeth good. No, not one. Their throat is an open sepulcher, and and with their tongues, they have used deceit. The poison of asps is under their lips, whose mouth is full of cursing and bitterness. Alright. Now now now who who's Paul talking about here? Do you know? Who is Paul talking about here? Well, he's talking about the unsaved world.
Alright? That's what he's talking about. He's talking about people that do not know Jesus Christ. Alright? And so so it's a picture of an unsaved person. Alright? So so what do we have? We have identification with the world, the backsliding condition, an unsaved person, and then finally in James chapter three. James chapter three. So you're gonna keep on going forward in your Bible. You're gonna go through all the Pauline epistles. Keep going back. You're gonna pass the Thessalonians first and second, first and second Timothy, Titus, Philemon, which is a great little book. Philemon then Hebrews, and then you're gonna get to James.
So right after the book of Hebrews comes James. James chapter three and, verse number five. James chapter three verse five. Even so, the tongue is a little member and boasteth great things. Behold how great a matter a little fire kindleth. And the tongue is a fire, a world of iniquity. So is the tongue among our members that it defileth the whole body and setteth on fire the course of nature, and it is set on fire of hell. For every kind of beasts and of birds and of serpents and of things in the sea is tamed and hath been tamed of mankind. But the tongue can no man tame is it is an unruly evil full of deadly poison.
Well, you know what? You read something like that, and you you know, it's no wonder your Bible's considered to be hate literature. It's no wonder. You know, God really doesn't have anything good to say about your tongue. He really doesn't. You know, the great evangelist, D. L. Moody, back in the eighteen hundreds, you know, and and Moody only had an eighth grade education. But, you know, he loved the Lord. He loved the Lord, and he he was he was a great preacher, and and God greatly used him. Well, a lady came up to him one time and she said, mister Moody, I counted 57 grammatical errors in your sermon.
And he said, lady, you see this thing right here? This thing right here? And he pulled his tongue out of his mouth, like he was holding his tongue in his hands. He pulled his tongue out. He goes, you see that thing right here? I'm using it for the glory of God. What are you using yours for? Whoo. Whoo. I am sure that was the end of that conversation. So so so so cursing and swearing, it pollutes the land. It identifies us with the world, the backslidden condition. It's the language of an unsaved person, and it's it's it's lack of self discipline according to James chapter three, which we just read.
Alright? What's the second problem with the tongue? Not only does it curse and it swears, but it lies. It lies. Go back to, to Proverbs in chapter 12. Proverbs chapter 12. So you can go back to the middle of your Bible again. Find the book of Psalms, then go to Proverbs chapter number 12. Proverbs chapter 12 and verse number 17. He that speaketh truth showeth forth righteousness, but a false witness, deceit. There is that speaketh like the piercings of a sword, but the tongue of the wise is health. The lip of the the lip of truth shall be established forever, but a lying tongue is but for a moment.
Deceit is in the heart of them that imagine evil, but to the counselors of peace is joy. There shall no evil happen to the just, but the wicked shall be filled with mischief. Lying lips are an abomination to the lord, but they that deal truly are his delight. Alright. So you you kinda get the impression that god's really not in favor of lying. You see, God hates the lying tongue. Alright. Go back to Proverbs chapter six. You're in Proverbs, just go backwards. Six chapters. Proverbs chapter six, it might just be a page or two, but go back six chapters. Proverbs chapter six, and, let's take a look at verse 16.
These six things doth the Lord hate. Yea, seven are an abomination unto him. A proud look, a lying tongue, hands that shed innocent blood, a heart that deviseth wicked imaginations, feet that be swift in running to mischief, a false witness that speaketh lies, and he that soweth discord among the brethren. Well, so the Lord's really not impressed with a lying tongue and all the lies that people perpetuate. Now you know, oftentimes the lie is really only covering for another sin. Look over in Proverbs chapter 10. Proverbs in chapter 10.
Yep. Here we go. Proverbs chapter 10. Now you you remember when you were a kid, and, you know, you did something you'd get in trouble for, you know, if you got caught. And so and so, you know, you you you said in there you're trying to to manufacture some kind of a some kind of a story. Alright. We'll call it a story. You know, that that that that wasn't necessarily the truth, or or you try to cast the blame somewhere else, except on yourself. You know, that kind of thing. You you know you know what I'm talking about. We've all done it. Some of us still do it. You know who you are.
But what is that? Really, what is that? Lies oftentimes are just covering for another sin. And, Proverbs chapter 10 and verse 18, he that hideth hatred with a with lying lips, and he that uttereth slander is a fool. Well, I can't say it any better than God says it, and he said it fantastically right there. Alright? Now there's a great story about that, and you find it over in Acts chapter five. We're not gonna turn there, but, it's a story about a guy by the name of Ananias and his wife Sapphira. I don't know if you remember that story. I hope you do. It's a good story. So, what, what the saints were doing there in in the early church in Jerusalem, is is they were kind of gravitating in a way. Let me be careful here. People just take this and run with it.
But they were kind of gravitating toward, a type of a socialistic com communal living. Alright? Now God never told them that they had to do that. Alright? They were just voluntarily thinking on those terms. And so, you know, people are selling their property, they're selling their goods, and this and that, and and they're putting it all in the pool of the church treasury as it were. And so this this particular couple said, hey, you know, we sold, you know, we we sold this, we we sold this, we sold that, and and and this is our gift to the Lord. Except except they kept back part of it.
They kept back a part of it, but the impression that they left was that that they gave it all to the Lord. And so God said, hey, you know what? You're in trouble. Dude, you're in trouble. And if you don't know the story, you need to go home and you read it. See, you know, you do. You need you need to go read it. Acts chapter five. Now remember, God never told them that they had to give it all. There was that was never the prerequisite. But what was the difficulty? What was it the difficulty was that they lied about it. Alright? That was the problem.
So oftentimes, a lie just covers another sin. Well, and, yeah. And and liars enjoy listening to one another. Alright? Proverbs chapter 17. Proverbs chapter 17, and, go to verse four. Proverbs 17 verse four. You know, I just just so you know, I I I have over 30 scripture references for you. So if it takes me a second to find it in my list here, you know, forgive me for that, please. Alright. But, Proverbs chapter 17 and verse four. A wicked doer giveth heed to false lips, and a liar giveth ear to a naughty tongue. Hey folks, you know what Washington DC is?
Washington DC is just one big giant liars club. That's exactly what it is. It's just I mean, you just talk about a a a a pool of pollution. Well, the Bible says, liars will be punished. Alright? Look over in Proverbs chapter 19. Alright? Proverbs chapter 19. Now now just keep in mind that Proverbs is a book of wisdom. Alright? Now, we occasionally in this study, you know, we refer to other passages, but the vast majority of of of, of what we're talking about is right here in the book of Proverbs. You don't really have to go outside of the Proverbs to find them. You know, to find all this information, but it's good as support. Okay? It's good to good for support. Alright. So in Proverbs chapter 19 and verse number five, a false witness shall not be unpunished, and he that speaketh lies shall not escape.
Shall not escape. Alright? Verse nine, nineteen nine. A false witness shall not be unpunished, and he that speaketh lies shall perish. You see that? Shall perish. So verse nine actually gets a little more radical than verse five. Verse five says, shall not escape. Verse nine says, shall perish. You you see the difference? So so God God doesn't look kindly on liars. Alright? And finally, over in, Proverbs chapter 20 Proverbs chapter 20, God has a has a very interesting way of of saying this in chapter 20 and verse 17. Proverbs chapter 20 verse 17.
Bread of deceit is sweet to a man, but afterwards his mouth shall be filled with gravel. Bread of deceit is sweet to a man, but it but afterwards his mouth shall be filled with gravel. Alright. Now let me explain that to you in modern twenty first century vocabulary. They're gonna eat their words. Alright? They'll eat their own words. And that's kind of what God is suggesting right here. They'll just eat their own words. And, and I'm I'm I know you've all heard that phrase before. We've all used it. We've all said it. We've all heard it. Alright?
They will eat their own words. So cursing, swearing, lying, those are those are areas that people get into trouble with with their tongue. Alright. But there's another one. Proverbs chapter 18. Proverbs chapter 18. You know, Proverbs Proverbs is a tough book. It's a it's a rough book. Not tough to understand, but it's rough. Proverbs chapter 18. I'll tell you why. Because it's constantly constantly hammering our behavior. Alright? That's a tough book, you know. That's tough. Proverbs 18 and, verse number eight. The words of a tale bearer are as wounds, and they go down into the innermost parts of the belly.
Right? Now Moses Moses warned the people about tale bearing all the way back over in Leviticus. So keep your finger here on Proverbs, but, go with me to to Leviticus 19. Alright. Now Leviticus is in the front of your bible. Alright. It's Genesis, Exodus, Leviticus, third book of your bible. Leviticus chapter 19. Leviticus chapter 19. Are you with me? You there? Alright. And everybody? Alright. Leviticus 19 and verse 16. Alright. Now this is clear back in the law. Alright. I mean, you know, this is this is this is pretty fundamental. Alright. This is a cornerstone of Christian behavior.
Thou shalt not go up and down as a talebearer among thy people, neither shalt thou stand against the blood of thy neighbor. I am the lord. So, like, wow. You know? So so the lord the Lord compares tale bearing to violence and shedding blood. Violence and shedding blood. So so you must not be happy about that. You know, some things ought to be concealed whether they're true or false. You've heard people say you've heard people say over the years, you know, good, you know, good Christian prayer chains. You know, well, when I want you to pray about about this, and well, you know, I I really don't wanna say anything about it, but it's true. You know you know what I'm talking about.
I have a great story, I'm not gonna tell you, I just don't have time for it, but it's a great story. It actually took place at a prayer meeting. Alright? The the there are there are some things that need to be concealed whether true or false. Alright. Proverbs chapter 11 and verse number 13. Proverbs eleven thirteen, a tale bearer revealeth secrets, but he that is of a faithful spirit concealeth the matter. Alright. That's pretty plain. That's pretty plain. Some things you just leave alone. Leave it buried. Don't dig it up. Alright. And then we take a step further and and go back to Proverbs chapter 10.
You know what real love does? Do you know what real love does? Proverbs chapter 10 and, verse number 12. Where are you? Proverbs 10 verse 12. Hatred stirreth up stripes, but love covereth all sins. Hatred stirreth up stripes, but love covereth all sins. I mean, think about it. If you love someone, if you truly love someone, there are just there were just some things you're not gonna rehearse, whether they're true or not. Make sense? Verse nine. Proverbs chapter 17 and verse nine. Proverbs 17 and verse nine. He that covereth a transgression seeketh love, but he that repeateth a matter separateeth very friends.
Now, you know, when we love others, you know what we need to be doing? When we love others, do you know what we need to be doing? We need to be seeking a way to help them privately. If they need help, help them privately. You know, not the famous prayer chains. You know? Well, did you hear? Oh, yeah. That's bad. We really need to pray for those people. You know? You have no idea how often that happens. First Peter, chapter four. First Peter chapter four. You know, just as an example, I'm gonna tell you a story anyway. One time I decided to have have some fun with with some folks that I knew just loved to gossip.
You know, I don't know if you heard this or not, but, the Baptist preacher, the Catholic priest, and the Jewish rabbi were all having coffee together. Alright? Yeah. They were kinda fishing buddies, you know, and they and, you know, they had their theological differences, but you know, they enjoyed friendship. You know, they enjoyed their friendship. And and one day they got into a really serious conversation, and decided that that, you know, maybe they should, you know, predicated on on what James said, confess your faults one to another. So the Baptist preacher said, you know, he said, well, he said, I'll tell you, he said, I hate to say this, but every now and then every now and then, I like to, you know, take a nip from the old bottle.
Oh, well, that's not good. That's not good, but, you know, we understand brother. We understand. You know, sometime the ministry sometimes the ministry can be very difficult, it can be very compelling. And so then the Catholic priest said, he said, well, you see, you know, this isn't real good, but but you know, every now and then, I just lift a few extra dollars out of the till, you know, support some of my habits. Oh, that's not good. That's not that's not good at all. They looked at the rabbi, and they said, well, he said, I have to tell you fellas.
He said, my frailty is gossip, and I can't wait to tell some folks. So so, so so anyway, so I played a trick on on a friend I I know back home, and I was visiting another another mutual friend. And I said, you know you know brother so and so, you know, he just loves gossiping about some of the brethren and and some of the preachers. And so I said, would you do me a favor? He said, what's that? I said, call him up. And in the most persuasive way you can, tell him this little tidbit of gossip. I'm not gonna tell you what it was. Alright?
But tell him this little bit of gossip about me, and let's see how long it takes to make the circuit. He said, oh, okay. Yeah. Let's do that. Let's do it. And so he did. He called, he said, hey, did you hear about brother Joe? What? What? What? What? What? What? What? Well, he went on with the story. He made it very very convincing. And boy, I'm telling you, I mean, that thing went around, and it wasn't even remotely close to the truth. Not even nowhere near it, you know? But, and that, you know, that was evil on my part. Right? It probably was anyway. I don't know. I was having fun at the expense of a brother, you know, but, you know, sometimes sometimes you just get a little carnal. Amen?
Amen? Alright. Now first Peter, let's go to, first Peter. If you if you if you're gonna help folks, if you're gonna help folks, you gotta do it the right way. Alright? That's the point, the right way. First Peter, let's see. You gotta go to your New Testament and tell you how to get there. New Testament, go all the way to the back. You're gonna pass Hebrews. Remember, we were in James, and then you're gonna go to, first Peter. Alright? Right after James, first Peter. Alright. Are we there? Are we there? First Peter chapter four and verse eight.
And above all things, have have fervent now now now there's one place one of the six places where the word fervent is used is right here. Alright? This is one of the six places that fervent is used. And above all things, have fervent charity among yourselves, for charity shall cover the multitude of sins. You know, good thoughts, good behavior, good actions toward the brethren covers a lot of things that undoubtedly need to be covered. You know, a lot of folks have been hurt over the years because of tail bearing, and and it really is a shame. It really is. Alright. Now now there's much more that we could say about that, but I've I've got a couple more points we wanna work through. So, go over to Proverbs chapter 12.
Proverbs chapter 12, so you can go back to your new back to your old testament. Right? You should probably just keep your finger in Proverbs as we're going through this. So Proverbs chapter what did I say? Chapter 12? Yes. Proverbs chapter 12, and, we're gonna go to verse number 13. Proverbs chapter 12 and verse 13. Alright? The wicked is snared by the transgression of his lips, but the just shall come out of trouble. Alright. Well, what does that mean? Well, let's go to chapter 18 and get a little bit more clarity on that. Proverbs chapter 18, and, we're gonna go to verse number six.
Proverbs 18 and verse six. A fool's lips enter into contention, and his mouth calleth for strokes. A fool's mouth is his destruction, and his lips are the snare of his soul. Alright. So you know what that's talking about? You know what that's it it's it's talking about talking too much. Alright? It's talking about talk I don't know if you've ever noticed it, but some folks just talk too much. A fool talks too much and gets himself in trouble. Go to Proverbs and chapter 10. Proverbs and chapter 10. We should be close. Right? Proverbs chapter 10 verse 19. In the multitude of words, there wanteth not sin, but he that refraineth his lips is wise.
In the multitude of words, there wanteth not sin, but he that refraineth his lips is wise. Alright? Chapter 13. Chapter 13 and verse three. He that keepeth his mouth keepeth his life, but he that openeth wide his lips shall have destruction. You know, John Wesley, refused, and I I adopted this policy. And not all not because of John. I didn't know it was John Wesley at the time that I adopted this policy. I I adopted it because my the pastor of my church, my senior pastor when I was serving under as a as an associate pastor, he he kept this rule, and I got it from him, and he got it from John Wesley. I guess, it just kinda shows you that that verse in Ecclesiastes where it says there's nothing new under the sun, basically means that if if you've thought of it, someone's thought about it before you. So, you know, that's where it came from. That this is the rule that I follow, I follow to this day. Much to the annoyance of a lot of people. There's a lot of people that just do not get this.
But John Wesley refused to have a conversation with anybody longer than twenty minutes. Okay. Twenty minutes. He his attitude was that after twenty minutes, it's all going downhill in the wrong direction. So so that was you know, I'm not saying that was right or wrong. I personally think it's right. You form your own decision. I'm not gonna tell you if it's right or wrong, but John Wesley was was a was a great man of God. And and I I think he he probably had a few things figured out, even if he was a Methodist. You know, we could overlook that, that's okay.
Because back then the Methodist were Alright. But God really used him. God really used him. No question about it. Alright. A man of few words is one of knowledge. Let's go to Proverbs chapter 17 and verse 27. Proverbs 17 and verse 27, if I could find it. I know I clipped it. There we go. He that hath knowledge, spareth his words, and a man of understanding is of an excellent spirit. Now right now, this verse is classic. This is a classic verse. I mean, just verse 28, just a classic verse. Even a fool, when he holdeth his peace, is counted wise. And he that shutteth his lips is esteemed a man of understanding.
So in other words, don't open your mouth and remove all doubt. You know? You you follow me? And, there there it is. It's just right there. Just talking too much. You see? Talking too much. Don't do it. Don't do it. Alright? Now what about, talking too soon? Uh-huh. Talking too soon. It's kind of a twin sister of that, but chapter 18 and, and verse 13. He that answereth the matter before he heareth it, it is folly and shame unto him. You know, how many times how many times have you talked to people who you got the distinct impression very quickly in the conversation that they weren't really listening to you?
They were thinking about, you know, what they were gonna say next most of the time. They're planning their conversation ahead of time. We've all had that experience. I have, you know, everybody has. You know what that is? That's talking too soon. That's talking too soon. You know what God wants you to do? He wants you to search a thing out, And part of searching the thing out is listening to what someone else might think about it or say about it. Alright. Go to Proverbs chapter 25. Proverbs in chapter 25. Alright. So I'm just going toward the back. Proverbs 25.
Proverbs in chapter 25 and, verse two. It is the glory of God to conceal the thing, but the honor of kings is to search out a matter. Search it out. Search it out. You know? I mean, that's not working too good in Washington. Really it's not, is it? Now, those are all, you know, and you know, that that's five negatives. Alright? I just gave you five negatives. Cursing and swearing, lying, tail bearing, talking too much, talking too soon. Alright? Those are all arenas where the tongue gets all of us in trouble. Alright? Now when a tongue is used for the right purpose, alright, there there are five positives, and and they're brief. So we'll we'll get through them really quick. I'm gonna run them through with you. Alright. Number one. Let's go to chapter 15.
God doesn't want you to just shut up and never say anything. Alright? God wants you to use your mouth and use your tongue, but he wants you to use it, for a right purpose. You see? Proverbs 15 and verse one, and here it is. A soft answer turneth away wrath, but grievous words stir up anger. Husbands, pay attention to that. A soft answer turns away wrath, but grievous words stir up anger. Don't pick a fight. Alright? Now I do. I have a problem with that. I have a problem. A a a guy just just just about ran me off the road the other day, on on my way on my way home. Alright. I did not have any soft words. Alright.
I didn't. Sometimes you say it and you repent later. Right? Alright. But you know what? You know what? You know what a good tongue does? It brings men to peace, is what it does. It brings men a soft answer turneth away wrath, but grievous words stir up anger. So if if you don't ever have any trouble with your tongue, let me touch you, please. Please. I mean, I I think I honestly I think this gets all of us. All of us. And and and it's all down to where we live. Alright? But that's not all. Chapter 25. Chapter 25. It gives wise reproof to the erring. Alright? That's what the right tongue will do, the right mindset. Proverbs 25 and verse number 12.
As an earring of gold and an ornament of fine gold, so was a wise reprover upon an obedient ear. So if someone is willing to to listen and take a little rebuke or a little reproof, and the words and the words are are framed correctly, then it's a good thing. It's a good thing. Chapter 28 verse 23. He that rebuketh a man afterwards shall find more favor than he that flattereth with the tongue. That's good. That's good. He that rebuketh a man afterwards shall find more favor than he that flattereth with the tongue. Alright? Now you have to be careful with these things. You have to be careful with things. Everything needs to be balanced.
Like we studied all the way back six weeks ago in our first lesson, a false balance is an abomination unto the Lord. Alright? That's not all. Proverbs 11. Proverbs 11. Yeah. I'm telling you, Proverbs got a lot to say, you know. Proverbs got a lot to say about what we say. It is a tough book, man. It is a tough book. Proverbs 11 and verse number nine. Proverbs 11 verse nine. An hypocrite with his mouth destroyeth his neighbor, but through knowledge shall the just be delivered. Alright. You know what? You know what? With the right speech, the right tongue, the right mouth does, it delivers lost souls.
Is what it does. Alright? Look in Proverbs chapter 14. Proverbs chapter 14, which which led Solomon, of course, to to say that he that winneth souls is wise. Alright? Verse 14 and, chapter 14 verse three. In the mouth of the foolish is a rod of pride, but the lips of the wise shall preserve them. Alright. Very good. That's very good. Alright. Verse 25, same chapter. Verse 25 of the same chapter. A true witness delivereth souls, but a deceitful witness speaketh lies. So one of the best things that you can do with your mouth is deliver souls.
Remember, he that winneth souls is wise. Alright? The number four, the right kind of mouth and tongue teaches people the things of the Lord. Go to Proverbs 15 and verse seven. Proverbs 15 verse seven. Now, you know, as as I dove into this into this study, I knew that God had, you know, well, you know, the book of Proverbs had a lot to say about our speech, about our tongue, about our lips, our mouth, you know? But I I honestly, I didn't realize how much. I mean, I knew it had a lot to say, but when I really started to look and catalog it and and and everything, I, you know, I I said, wow. God really puts a lot of emphasis on what we say or don't say.
Alright. Genesis chapter I'm sorry. Proverbs chapter 15 and verse seven. Proverbs 15 and verse seven. The lips of the wise disperse knowledge, but the heart of the foolish doeth not so. So in other words, if you're gonna say something, try to make it productive. If you're gonna say something, try to be productive. Try to make it useful. You see? Something that'll be a benefit to somebody. Alright? Chapter 16. Proverbs 16. Just a few pages over. Proverbs 16. And, verse 21. Proverbs 16 verse 21. The wise in heart yeah. The wise in heart shall be called prudent, and the sweetness of the lips increase learning.
Alright? Verse 23. The heart of the wise teacheth his mouth and adeth learning to his lips. And then, and so it teaches people the things of the Lord. Alright? When the tongue is used for the right purpose, number one, it brings men to peace. Number two, it gives, it gives wise, reproof to the erring. Number three, it delivers lost souls. Number four, it teaches people the things of the Lord. And then number five, it carries the gospel. It carries the gospel. Go to, chapter 25. Proverbs chapter 25. Proverbs 25. And you're gonna go to verse number 25. Proverbs twenty five twenty five.
As cold waters to a thirsty soul, so is good news from a far country. You know what the word you know what the gospel the the word gospel means? It means good news. That's what the word actually means. Gospel means good news. And so as cold waters to a thirsty soul, so is good news from a far country. Alright? So it carries the gospel. It carries that that's what an appropriate tongue, speech, etcetera, etcetera, etcetera does. Alright? So let's avoid the cursing and the swearing. Alright? And I'm I'm pointing to myself too. I I let I let him slip every now and then. So let's avoid that. Let's avoid the cursing and swearing, lying, tale bearing, talking too much, talking too soon, and use our mouth for the right reason.
Now you get over in James chapter five, you know, we just read a passage, but, you know, if if you if you read more of the context there, you know what James is talking about? And he said, you know, we put we put bits in in horses mouths to control them. Isn't that what we do? You know, you know, God's really patient with us. Isn't he? When you think about it, he he's just really, really patient with us. God I think I could say this. God doesn't really wanna have to put a bit in your mouth. You know, he's got one that'll fit you. You know, believe me, and some of them are pretty radical. But you know, he prefers just a little tug.
Just a little tug. God, take it easy on my mouth, will you? Let me use it for your glory. And that's what I think we all need to pray for, and that's what I think we all should desire to achieve. Our heavenly father, we wanna thank you again for the day. Thank you God for the wisdom of this great book. Thank you for the study that we've done over the last seven weeks. Father, help us to apply these things to our lives. Help us, lord, to stay away from the cursing, the swearing, the tale bearing, the lying, the talking too soon, the talking too much.
God help us, and then use us to glorify your son, the lord Jesus Christ, and we'll thank you for it. For it's in the precious name of our savior, the lord Jesus Christ, we do pray. Amen. Amen and amen. Alright. Well, that's brings us to the end of our study in the book of Proverbs, and I hope that was a blessing to you. I I really do. I really do hope that was a blessing to you. I hope that you got something out of that. I hope we learn something out of that, not just yourself, but even my even myself too. You know, when I do these studies, you know, don't think that that I'm I'm I'm pointing fingers at you only. I'm pointing right back at myself too. You know, sometimes I I do these studies and and and it's like God's telling me something about myself, and I saw a lot of that throughout the course of the study in various spots.
So I hope you're able to apply it to yourself as well. Drop a comment down below, let us know what you think. Shoot us an email at [email protected], or, head over to our website. Drop us a comment in the context in in the, in the contact form. Let us know what you think. Let us know what you think. Now, next Sunday, we're gonna start a whole new series. I think we're gonna start teaching, dispensations. So I'm I'm torn. There there are two directions I wanna go. I have I have both already prepared, the outlines at least. So, I wanna teach revelation, but I also wanna teach on dispensations because I keep mentioning dispensationalism, and and, I'm not sure if everybody understands what that actually is.
So I'm thinking we might do dispensational teaching first and then go on from there. Alright. So we'll see. We'll we'll figure it all out. But, either way, I I think you're really gonna get a blessing out of those studies, and so I'm excited to teach either one of them. So, I hope you're willing and able to sit through them. They're lengthy. I'm not gonna say they're not. I think, the study on Revelation is, like, twenty something weeks. It's a long one. Dispensations is about twenty seventeen to twenty weeks or so. So I I somewhere in there, I I don't remember the off the top of my head. So we'll see. We'll we'll decide. We'll pray over it over the week. Pray for it. Pray for me as we decide which one we're gonna do, and then we'll go forward.
