In this episode of Now You Know Eagle Pass, we return with a community-focused conversation, live check-ins, and a special guest announcement. After a quick “reality check” on online bullying and fake profiles targeting local voices, we dive into local issues like bridge traffic congestion, toll hikes, and holiday travel backups. Our featured guest, educator Maribel Garcia Rodriguez—33 years in the classroom and former JP candidate—officially announces her run for Maverick County Commissioner, Precinct 4. She shares her platform priorities: public safety, better street lighting (modern, secured LED), tackling illegal dumping, neighborhood cleanliness, and strengthening coordination with law enforcement and neighboring jurisdictions. We also discuss the dynamics between city, county, and school district, and Maribel’s perspective as a member of EPISD’s safety committee on proactive campus security measures. She weighs in on the proposed Puerto Verde/“third bridge,” citing concerns about impacts to city revenues, neighborhoods, and uncertainty for residents. The conversation emphasizes respectful debate, grassroots engagement, and putting constituents first over political factions. We close by inviting all candidates to share their platforms on the show as election season heats up in Precinct 4.

[00:03:08] Unknown:
So today, we had an event kick kickoff? Yes. The kickoff.
[00:03:15] Unknown:
Was it a party, or is it a it's a campaign kickoff or it's a campaign It was a campaign kickoff. It was my first time going to one. So How did you like it? It was good. It was good? Interesting. That's that's why we're all in I'm all in the Yes. All. Business attire. We're all looking looking fabulous, looking cool, looking great. You know, state rep, Eddie Morales was there, gave you a kiss on the cheek, and he was kinda, like, holding a tray. And I wasn't sure if you wanted me to kiss him on the cheek. And I was just, like, no. I'm not gonna kiss you, man. We're good. No.
But anyway, so guys, before we get started, we do have a special guest. I mean, we we were gonna we had been canceling the podcast on a different occasions. So, of course, we wanna stay consistent with you all and, of course, keep the controversy going, not purposely, just letting you guys know. And, we got some good stuff going on. So we do have a special guest. Before we do though, I am gonna go on my reality check segment before we bring, this individual in. Just to let you know, we have had, whoo, we've had we've had some adventures going on, man. I don't know what's been going on with our public officials, when it comes to fake profiles or when it comes to just being straight up bullies. Guys, this isn't something that I'm making up. This isn't something that I'm just I just feel like doing because I just have no life. I do have a job. I do have a kid to to take care of. This is something that, you know, I feel it in me that I have to point out, especially when it comes to our public officials. Holding them accountable, should not make anybody angry. It should not make anybody mad, especially when you're not doing the right thing. Okay? And that when it comes to making fake profiles and sending threatening messages and all that good stuff.
You know what? I know that I'm not everybody we're not everybody's cup of tea, but, you know, we do it for you guys to so you guys can stay informed. I know a lot of people are kinda scared to to podcast with us because of all the controversy, and everybody says that we just love to do it because we just love to be in the middle of things. That's not true, guys. We, we're here to serve you, no matter what, and we're gonna take the hits. I'm gonna take the hits. You know, if you guys you know, whoever's out there, you know, wants to come at me, that's great. Go for it.
Don't come after the people that I love, though. I love Veronica. I love my fam. I love my friends. I love my spa or, you know, I don't you know, people that love to support me behind the scenes, my organizations that I have. Guys, you wanna go after that. That's the wrong wrong thing. I'll push back 10 times harder. And I think you guys have seen that now that I have exploited these fake profiles. You know, it it's it's pretty much set in stone. You know, if you guys wanna look at me funny when I'm at Chili's or when I'm at an event, that's fine. I'll still come to you and shake your hand. I didn't shake anybody's hands today. I kinda wasn't in the mood. So I just I was just having a good time at Anilu's, launch party. She is running for a commissioner Precinct 4, and we were just guests, and we were invited. We, you know, we'll we'll be covering her campaign as well as well as others, whoever's whoever wants to yeah. Everybody's. If you were all everybody's welcome to promote their campaign with us.
You know, just keep in mind that we we do wanna promote you, wear your shirts, wear rock your signs. We wanna get your message out there and magnify it since we are coming into the political season. Also, one last thing we wanted to talk about really quick, before I go. I know that there is some bridge things, Vero. I don't know. We have some bridge problems going on right now. Apparently, it's, there's been a lot of traffic coming back from Piedras Negras. Yes. Only two lanes open. Really? And that's such a shocker, but, like, isn't it isn't that normal? Isn't that what happens all the time, or is it just me? I think it's normal. I haven't gone to Mexico in a long time, but, yes, I think it's normal, you know, and especially on Sundays. So Yeah. I mean, that that's what I figured. But we have we're not gonna mention names. We do have some who are kinda like, oh my god. This is unacceptable.
You know? This is, we don't know why this is happening. You know, it it is CBP. I mean, that's why I dread going to Pia De Los Negras. It's just, I mean, I love going. Don't get me wrong. I like going to the restaurants and stuff and, you know, if I need to go to the dentist or whatever, you know, I I love going there, but it's it's it's coming back is the problem. And my big and I think the public's biggest thing is, you know, when why are we raising the bridge tolls to try to reduce traffic when the traffic on the other side is the problem? Mhmm. I think that's really hard. I think that's gonna we don't know how that's gonna subside unless we get more lanes. Right? I mean, is that something that's a big discussion with everybody?
[00:10:16] Unknown:
I think it is. And more now nowadays because of the holidays, Thanksgiving's coming up, Christmas, kids come out on vacations. You know?
[00:10:24] Unknown:
Yeah. Exactly. And we got the paisano's coming, so that's gonna be hectic. I mean, it's every year it happens. I think we get ready for it, and we're used to it. We'll have another talk about that on another segment. But first, I wanna bring in our guest at this time. I I don't wanna spoil anything. I think I'm gonna let her tell us why she's here. Alright. And she is Maribel Garcia Rodriguez. Hello, ma'am. Thank you for joining us. She's actually, actually, actually did run for, justice of the peace for Precinct 4. She did run for justice of the peace a couple of years ago. Of course. And, she is a prominent figure in the in the community. You know, you have she's come from a, a migrant family, and she's, you know, worked her way to the top.
You know, thirty three years, she's dedicated a career to educating and supporting children. She's consistently ranked among the top teachers in the grade level. You're a teacher. You're currently a teacher. Correct? Yes. I am currently a teacher. I
[00:11:27] Unknown:
teach at, first year at high school. Oh, okay. I was in elementary all my life, and I made the move.
[00:11:34] Unknown:
Was that sec did you do secondary before that? Or No. I actually did. I started with second grade grade,
[00:11:41] Unknown:
then I went, I did that for four years, I think. And then I went to sixth grade. I was there forever. Then I got moved to fifth one year, and then I just made the bold jump to high school English four.
[00:11:55] Unknown:
Yeah. I just kinda worked your way up to the top. That's gotta be tough, though. You know?
[00:12:01] Unknown:
It's got its challenges, but I love it. I love it. That's cool. Remember what they say that when you love what you do, you never have to work it in your life. Love what you do. My mother my mother. There you go. Madonika, would you ever wanna be a teacher? And if you would, like No. Thank you. Thank you. No. No.
[00:12:15] Unknown:
You you know, teachers Having enough with the children at home. Oh, yeah. I I have one I have one guy one kiddo at home and and, you know, I I love him to death. But, you know, when school comes around, like, hey. Have a good day at school and, you know, we'll do parenting when when you get back. So but it's good to have you on the show. Thank you. Thank you for having me. Of course. Absolutely. You're welcome. You know? Our pleasure. Yes. Definitely our pleasure. We definitely want to have as much guests as possible and, of course, talk about anything and everything. I know we're stealing that from my buddy Joe Roos today, but, you know, we we we do have some controversial podcast. I don't know if you've heard or if you haven't watched.
[00:13:00] Unknown:
It wouldn't be fun if it wasn't controversial. Right? It's excessively.
[00:13:05] Unknown:
Or, you know, people try to say that it's, like, it's I'm just doing it just to just to get the views or the likes or whatever. I I I started just kinda wanting to spread a message. You know what I mean? And I actually I I actually started, you know, wanting to be a conservative voice for, you know, for Eagle Pass since, you know, the Republican Party is not very strong out here. I am an open minded conservative, so that's why I asked, hey, Democrats can come on too. And and, you know, we can always have an open conversation. And, you know, we've had conversations with Eddie Morales.
You know, he's a Yeah. Democrat. And sometimes Helen and I would fight on the Internet, and it was fun. You know what I mean? And and then later, we we have respect for each other. So, I mean, I would fight for beauty about this country, though. We can agree to disagree and have our own opinions, and that's why. Right? I mean, it's Why we love this country so much. Yeah. Absolutely. And like like I said, I would fight with Eddie too, and then we'd have that same respect, and we'd shake chicken to their hands and, you know, we we talk, and then we had him on a podcast, and it was great. But speaking of speaking of politics, so we we got you on the show. Why don't you tell us why you're here?
[00:14:13] Unknown:
Well, I'm here because I heard there was a party at Precinct 4. I think, what, we're at 89 now. I don't know how many people have thrown their ad in there. There's quite a few, and, I I didn't know. I knew there was gonna be a couple, but, I've always been interested in helping the community. And so it I'm I'm getting towards the end of my education well, my teacher era era. So it only seemed fitting to slide into to public service and offer my, expertise in that.
[00:14:48] Unknown:
Okay. Are you making an announcement?
[00:14:52] Unknown:
I am making an announcement. I am running for Precinct 4, commissioner for Precinct 4, and I will humbly request, your and do not endorsement. That's crazy. Just the faith in the people and, hopefully, their votes.
[00:15:10] Unknown:
You gotta get endorsements too. Those are important. It's oh, yeah. Yeah. Anybody out there? Yeah. Of course. No. Of course. Well, good. Congratulations. Thank you so much for making that that choice to Yeah. Put yourself in there. To serve the community.
[00:15:24] Unknown:
Yes. Definitely. I mean, I'm all I'm I'm I've been teaching for thirty three years, like I said. And so it's like, yeah, it's getting towards the end of my career. So this is the the most natural thing, I think. I've I've I've been always helping or doing volunteering, doing something rather. So I see the need in Precinct 4, and, I wanna be part of that that change. It's, exciting to see what I can offer.
[00:15:55] Unknown:
Vero, how many how many how many candidates did they say that we got possibly? I believe six. Six. And not everybody has registered yet. Right?
[00:16:05] Unknown:
I will register by Wednesday, I believe. By Wednesday. Okay. I'm trying, some
[00:16:10] Unknown:
some relatives are trying to come in. Oh, okay. Very good. And I'm glad that there's a lot of candidates running for that Princeton meeting because it really does need the help. So
[00:16:20] Unknown:
Yes. Yeah. Well Yes. I've been walking. I've been going down there, and, there's some areas that, yeah, would there there's a lot of work. It's been neglected for a while. And, I think because I did start when I went to, Saint Edwards, my major was criminal justice, and I can see where the need, especially the security, I can see it's all crime of opportunity, which it could easily be targeted by just let's get some lighting out there, but not just changing the focal out there. We need to secure those lights and not those old lights that only focus on that area. We need, you know, LED. We need state of the art ones where it encompasses a larger area. And once that's in place, everything trickles down. Like, you'll be exposure. You'll see the I saw a lot of dumping out there, illegal dumping. I saw two king-size mattresses out there. Then when I drove around, somebody else had a couch out there, and I was like, Max, this is ridiculous.
Yeah. I was like, I understand the planting of trees, and we want the parks, but, hey. Let's get down to foundation. Let's let's work on what your basic needs Absolutely. Which is your safety, security, and the cleanliness of our neighborhood.
[00:17:36] Unknown:
So I want you to kinda educate us a little bit more of me anyways because I'm I'm still pretty new to to Maverick County, Eagle Pass. So Precinct 4, what does that cover?
[00:17:45] Unknown:
That covers oh my god. Oh my god. That, if anything, it covers downtown, part of downtown, part of, Flower Street on down, I think, behind bushes, all of I I part of I part of Ithon Road. I know Ithon Road this way where HB Gonzalez is, Loma Bonita. It it's a it's a it's two weird little map that I had to get familiar with last time I ran. So, it has, all sorts of, issues. Every every location has a different issue. But, definitely, the need is on the South Side. Yeah. Of course.
[00:18:26] Unknown:
I did hear, like, you know, there was some, you you know, there's some problems down there, especially when it comes to, you know, law. And, I hear it's a pretty rough area. It's a rough area, especially
[00:18:40] Unknown:
with, you know, our our sheriff is doing as much as he can, but, he needs help from commissioner support. He needs the the funding he needs. We have very limited officers down there. And I know, that when there's an issue that arises, you're talking talking maybe one of the deputies that happens to be on on call is all the way by Kickapoo, and he has to make his way down here. We do have, the constable that does an amazing job, constable. They're they have some volunteers that we we have there. So we're we are doing as much as they can with what they have, but they there's a lot of room for improvement. And that's what I wanna look into. And, I mean, I'm only privy to some information.
Look. Why would I see when I look at coming to your store? But there is room for improvement, definitely. And that's my main goal. I need that security to kick in because, there's that's no way of living.
[00:19:44] Unknown:
Right. And, of course, we all wanna make a change and and Definitely. You doing this and wanting to be the reason to change is that's that's that's brave. You know? And Yeah. Not not a lot of people can just go and say, hey. You know what? I'm I'm I'm gonna well, they can. They can say I'm gonna run, but it's it's the support. And Yeah. You have a lot looks like you have a lot of support. I mean, like, you got miss Rosie Alcantu here that's, put the thumbs up, and we know she's gonna run for something. So, hey, girl. You wanna come jump on? She's running for a precinct too. Yeah. You got a lot of good support here. Everyone's saying hello. Yeah. I believe this is is Monica is is this your daughter? Monica Rodriguez. Yes. Monica Nicole says, let's go, mom. I don't know if you can see the
[00:20:23] Unknown:
the I can't see. Let's see. Let me see. Are you on the phone, or does it I know I'm putting I'm on the phone, so I'm at a little disadvantage. I am I'm a little better, so I can't really see much. But yeah. Yeah. Worries. I'll I'll be in contact. Oh, thank you. Thank you. And and that's what I wanted to to tell the constituents that I am a mom first and foremost and an educator. And so as an educator, we we the state gives you only your keys, your room, and the material. So when you go into a classroom and you see it all decked out with lights and with all this fun stuff and bugs and extra stuff, Actually, it's under the teacher. Let's not forget. The this the state provides you with a limited the then you come in, and the teacher adds that little extra nadget.
So, I'm used to the sacrificing. So I think I know. I don't think I know I will make a difference because it's like, just just forget the nonsense. Forget the noise. Let's just get down to business. Let's get to what needs to be done. Forget all the discipline. Yeah. And that's I mean, let's just forget all the nonsense. What do we need to do? And I want the people to realize and to understand where I'm coming from. I come from San Luisito. I went to San Luis Elementary, and I was a migrant worker. And when we would go up north, the ranchers would put us in, like, literally chicken soups, and my mom made it magical.
Like, I didn't know we were we were I mean, we were humble, but I never felt it because mom made it extra special. And that's why, I guess, it carries through my classroom and make it extra special out. I've invested in novels and sets for my classroom. So, I mean, with that, I know I can make a difference. It's a it's a larger area, obviously, but I can make it happen. I know I can make it happen, and I need a I need the support there from the people to back me up, and,
[00:22:35] Unknown:
it's gonna take a little. It literally does. We gotta get back to basics basics. Yep. Absolutely. And and now that you mentioned it, you know, we we talk about, you know, previous, elected officials that have been here. I think one of the biggest things that I hear is when somebody is somebody to carry out someone's legacy or someone who's left a legacy for whoever where wherever it is, whether it's your precinct or whether it's your county or whether it's your city. In this case scenario, I mean, obviously, when you have people running, there's we we like to point out that in in in, at some point in time, you're gonna be either one, letting the asking the people or letting the people know why we wanna choose you instead of the other candidate.
And two, what's why are you running, and what what are the what are the main issues now that have not been fixed that you're ready to you're ready to capitalize on? I know you've done some your your research and stuff, which is why you're running. So I guess we'll we'll start with that. What what what do you see that's, you know, one of the biggest things you see that's wrong with precinct four? And what's your take on, you know, why it, you know, it hasn't been addressed?
[00:23:51] Unknown:
I don't, the biggest definitely is is the security part. The security has to kick in that that you can't get anywhere without having that in place. We need to start, investing some funds in that. We need to clean up that area. We need to put the lighting where it needs to be. Once you have that lighting, that'll cut down on that crime of opportunity. That'll cut down on that illegal we're investing money from what I see when I when and I watch the commission reports. Meaning, when I see it, you're putting money in, planting trees in airports. I understand. I I I love love that we wanna expand, Maverick County to get more jobs for the community. I get that.
But you're not gonna get anywhere if if you don't have those things in place. The the analogy that I I was just talking to somebody, and I said, it's like having your house and getting a 98 inch screen and having a leather, sofa set and your hardwood floor. It's all nice and neat. You invested so much so much. Yet the roof leaks. As much as you invested, it's all gonna go down down. So why are we investing in everything else? Let's take care of basics first, and then let's throw let's invest in other things. But but, the humans, we need to secure our safety, clean our areas, and have our children be able to walk outside without the fear something happening out there.
I heard, people wanted some speed bumps on certain areas. They're afraid of some of the neighboring. I wanna create, a website, not necessarily where tips come in and, like, hey. Let's look at this. Let's start, going to visit not going to visit the house, but targeted and see where those elements that shouldn't be there. Let's point let's let's go look at that. Let's see what's going on there then invest in the road. It does take a lot of money. It's easier said than done. I realize that. But if you work in conjunction, all of commissioner's court have one goal, and that's the safety of our constituents, then we'll be better off with that.
But we do need to get along, and we do need to leak check our egos at the at the door and work for what's right. Absolutely. And the and the neighbors have to we have to go back to basics, guys. We have to be able to know who lives next door and have more, neighborhood watches. That's the only way it's gonna work. We need to bring the neighborhood together again again. Yes.
[00:26:39] Unknown:
Right, you would you'd agree, Veronica, that safety is very important. Like Yes. It is. We we wanna feel safe here in the Eagle Pass, Maverick County. Definitely.
[00:26:51] Unknown:
Yeah. There's some streets that are that are it's black black. And and they tell me no. They come and fix it and they block well, then it makes us it does no good to just go put another light bulb. You need to invest something that can secure that light light. Obviously, you're wanting to get a different result by doing the same thing over. No. No. Look into it. There is grants out there where they can fund for LED lights. That's the main thing that we need to do also. There's a lot of ideas that I have. And, when I went to Austin, I have friends, that work in Austin. I'm like, I go to Del Rio, work with border coalition there, and I ask questions. I was like, okay, guys. What's the deal? I like to get informed first, and I think that's why I was so nervous nervous. My guys, I wanna know the issue before I even open my mouth. I don't wanna sound like a total loony out here. I and then that's that's in my like, in my job. I research it. If anybody knows me, when I worked at Liberty, I leave, like, at six when they kick me out. Right now, I'm leaving seven, eight at high school because I wanna get familiar with the material, and I wanna do the best.
[00:27:59] Unknown:
And I'm just competitive that way that way. Well, that's good. That's something that we definitely need, especially I mean, I'm in precinct one, but I do hear, like, feedback from precinct four, and, you know, the the the stuff that we that that that precinct is lacking. And and, you know, we that's what the people are looking for, someone who could fill those gaps. And Yeah. Especially and, well, I think not only just the precincts, but it also keep in mind, having a commissioner's court work together. You know? Definitely. I don't wanna point that out right now because I know that's think everybody knows. Everybody knows, how it goes when we see commissioner's court. There's been a lot of controversy. There's been a lot of drama in the past years.
Yeah. We're not. Crazy. And not to mention you mentioned neighbors. And I do wanna know I think and I think the community would love your take on this. You know, getting along with the city. Now I'm not sure what's going on with the county and the city. I know that we recently we recently had a debacle, when it came to EMT services and fire and EMT services. That was something that I had been strongly vocal about, you know, when it comes to getting getting the job done right away. Meadow, do I need to take you off the screen? Hey. Hey. Let me let me let me let her get her business done there. You good? You good? So,
[00:29:23] Unknown:
so no. We'd love to talk to you. That off? Is that what we're doing?
[00:29:28] Unknown:
Are you are you muted? You're muted. Oh, I can't I can't unmute the mic. There you go. Sorry, guys. Cheers. Anyways, I'm so sorry. So yeah. No. One of the I think that's one of the biggest is we don't know. We or we can see the the tensions, when it comes to, you know, whether it's the city, the count whether it's between the city and the county or when it's between, commissioner's court, whether it's the county judge, whether it's the other commissioners. We can see that. And Yeah. I I we I'm sure that that the public definitely wants, you know, some variety in there that's gonna keep everybody together.
Yeah. Make decisions based on the, you know, not just off of because of one person says or two people or three, but the good of the people. You know? Definitely. Definitely. That's something very important. And, you know, we just kinda wanna know how, I think one of the biggest another question would be how would you be able to, unify this commissioner's court even though let's just say, you know, let, for instance, if somebody was to be elected alongside you, that you might not be their cup of tea or they or, you know, vice versa.
[00:30:36] Unknown:
Well well, I'm a professional, and we would have to have a discussion whereas it it's not about your ego. It's not what somebody else wants. It's what's best for the the county county, our constituents. Leave everything to the side. Leave all the noise to the side what is best best for our constituents. Once you get to that and leave everything, every do not go for what, oh, I might hurt this group or that's why it's very important for me to do grassroots, to do I'm not being backed by anybody. I don't belong to a certain group. I'm not gonna offend anybody by I'm gonna vote what's right for my constituents. I'm not gonna say, oh, I'm a compiler, you know, No. No. No. No. No. I don't care about that. I care about the constituents in Precinct 4.
I wanna know and doing my job. Exactly. It's like, that shouldn't even come into play of, oh, who's still gonna back me up? Who's not? Who wants to endorse this? No. Because, I mean, look at, and I don't have to go very far. Look at our country. Why haven't we after the what happened in Uvalde? Why could we not get stricter gun rules? Not take them away. I'm not saying that. I mean, I I'm for weapons and but with restriction, there has to be some limit there. Like, why haven't we been able to? Because we have special interest groups whispering on on the politician's ear. Let's just we're a small town. We need to look out for each other. Let's not get boggled up in, oh, it's gonna affect that group. Oh, they're not gonna be able to buy. Oh, that development's not gonna go through. Forget all that. That doesn't matter.
It matters that you entrusted me with your money. These little trips, these little other agencies that get money left and right, that doesn't sit well with me because that's not their money. That's the constituent's money. How is that helping, somebody on Peach Street that have their half a block blacked out? And at one other corner, they have pretty much a living room growing out of there in a full size king-size mattress thrown in their own tires. So it doesn't sit well with me. It's pretty filthy. I'm like, I paid you. And, like, my mother-in-law and my parents, they're elderly, and they save every month. They save from their minimum tax. They have to save for their taxes to make sure that they have their home.
And so I see it from my mother-in-law. I see it from my my parents. They're on a fixed income. I don't take it lightly that money that is entrusted entrusted, not given, entrusted on us to do the right thing.
[00:33:29] Unknown:
Absolutely. That wouldn't fit well with me. No. Absolutely. I don't think it fits well with anybody. Yeah. I mean, you know, the the we we like our county to look good. You know? Definitely. It has to
[00:33:41] Unknown:
it has to for the safety and security reason. Yeah. And the health wise. I mean, you see those god knows what's going down there.
[00:33:49] Unknown:
Yeah. Definitely. So we touched on we we touched on security a little bit. Beto, do you have any topics you like to do you have any ideas? Anything you wanna ask?
[00:33:58] Unknown:
Because I know I talk to you all night. Just wanted to No. No. Honestly, I'm educating myself too, so don't worry about it. What do you think of all the people running?
[00:34:08] Unknown:
I think the more the merrier. For. The more the merrier. Right? I think it's good for the community because they get to listen. I just want them to really think about it. Make an educated choice. Don't go by, oh, miss Alauda. Oh, she does it. Oh, I guess, yeah. Oh, I'm gonna get this. Don't think that way. What is better for our neighbors that are less fortunate? How are they really gonna invest this money on what I need, or what better suits that group? Yeah. That's there's a lot of that going on, and that's a good question. Yeah. And to me, it's like, you know, I'll say hi to everybody. I mean, I've I don't I when I see that something's wrong, am I vocal? Yeah.
I mean, I've been I I vocal and I say what I think and I believe, and and that's our god given ride. That's our thank god. We live in in this great country that we can still do that as a as a last last that I checked.
[00:35:10] Unknown:
We have our our opinions, and we can voice them voice them. Yeah. Of course. Absolutely. And and I think speaking of voicing our opinions, you know, I think one of the biggest one of the biggest thing that we everyone's voicing their opinion on is. And I definitely wanna get your take on that. I know that there's been a lot of, a lot of controversy, a lot of questions about it. A lot of people would say that, you know, it's it's gonna be good for the community. It's gonna be something that brings jobs. It's gonna be a, new source of of commercial traffic, coming to Eagle Pass.
And then there's cons about, you know, the environment. I can hear the giggling. I know you wanna get at it. I just had to bring that up. You know, the environment's gonna kill the environment or, you know, it's it's, you know, people might get, I think it's something or people think it's something that it's gonna be to benefit others. So much coming in on that. We wanna know what your take is on that.
[00:36:08] Unknown:
Okay. So I am, against it because it's gonna take away and again from from I'm learning. I'm researching from what I know, from what I understand. It's gonna take away from our bridge that we're already expanding. And so I'm thinking if we're getting those funds for our city, for our park, for our our, infrastructure here in Eagle Pass. And if there is even 1% of that taken away and given to a private entity, and we're counting on that money, obviously, we're gonna have to raise taxes to now meet the deficit that is now going over to a private entity bridge is what I'm understanding.
So that doesn't sit well. Why am I gonna and it's not 1%. I'm sure it's a hell of a lot more. But, and then I have an issue with it going through an established neighborhood. Las Linas is an established neighborhood. From what I get, I remember where the plan is. It's too close to an established neighborhood, and I don't know I'm not very familiar with what it is that it's gonna transport or whatever. It's too close to, neighborhoods. I don't know if they're gonna have, chemicals or or what what what it is. I am not very well versed with that yet, but but yeah. No. I'm not I'm not feeling that feeling that. And like I said, I'm gonna research, do some more research on that, but as of right now, I I am not. I don't I don't I don't I'm not for it for it. Right. You're not the only one. And I know a lot of the citizens from Psycho Mines are not either. They don't wanna lose lose their house, and I don't know if the imminent domain will kick in in that, if they're gonna take over. I mean, I wouldn't want somebody to come and take my house. Yeah. So pretty much we're not we're not certain
[00:38:25] Unknown:
on on the fate of that area when it comes to Puerto Vallarta. And and I think uncertainty is is even scarier than,
[00:38:33] Unknown:
I mean, knowing what's not what's gonna happen. Yeah. Yeah. And as far as the job, I saw the number, the jobs that were coming in. Well, that's that's jobs that are skilled based. Once they bring in those people to do those jobs, yeah, they're from out of town, then they leave. There's that is, oh my goodness. Talk about a good PR there. No. Those jobs are that's not the number. And people need to be aware. Come on, guys. Let's do our due diligence. Let's really get informed and, you know, let's just do better, guys. This is our people. This is our neighbors. This is our families. Let's do for them. Yeah. We can do better. We can do a lot better better. Absolutely. I I try I try to play devil's advocate when it comes to Puerto Vallarta because, like, honestly, I'm not sure. You know? I'm not sure if if I'm Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. As of right now, I'm I'm I'm I'm yet to get convinced or maybe somebody can educate me on it. But the little I do know, it's like, yeah. No. Yeah.
[00:39:34] Unknown:
No. Yeah. Absolutely. And and, again, that's one of the biggest controversial topics, especially when our bridge, right now is the big moneymaker, for Eagle Pass, or Tire Maverick County for that matter. Having a competition bridge, I don't think we all think about that or, you know, if that's gonna I mean, we already we already raised the bridge tolls. So if we have competition, and we gotta raise more taxes and raise the tolls and whatever Yeah. You know, it it it could get worse from there. But, again, uncertainty is is scarier than what we already know. So It it is.
The question is, do we wanna wait and see that? Exactly.
[00:40:15] Unknown:
Before it's too late. Before it's too late. Yeah. So I'm I'm I'm just like I I'm always researching. I'm always asking questions. I'm blessed that I have, a lot of volunteers that are helping me. I was surprised. I mean, people, I guess, they want the honest, raw truth. Sometime, like you say, even though it pisses people off, but, I I have a lot of volunteers that are helping, a lot of organizations that are that are helping me pass the word along. I visited the. It's it's that's some. To me, it's like, let's just do what's right. Forget about the investment. Forget about all that. Let's just do what's right. Let's make Maverick County the, the jewel that it is. That it should be even more.
[00:41:01] Unknown:
Absolutely. Yes. And now that we think now we talk about when you run for office, the the bread and butter for any candidate is definitely a campaign team. How's that going for you so far? And and, are you confident that, you know, this team can take you all the way? Yes. I I have. I'm blessed that,
[00:41:19] Unknown:
through my thirty three years in teaching, I've put out lawyers, tons of lawyers, this one class. I've put out doctors, engineers, chemical engineers, and they all come back. And, as a matter of fact, when I met Liberty and the sixth graders or or or taught sixth graders and have the seniors come back, they always come back and, ask for their I always tell them write to your future graduate, and they always come back looking for their their letters letters. But I've I've thousands of kids. And aside from that, I also, had a cheering team. So I went through a lot of cheerleaders through that and, at Memorial when I worked at Memorial. So I have a lot of people that have that have called me because, hey. We're with you. Yes. We'll help you. What do you need? When you walk, I'm gonna be with you a lot a lot along with coworkers.
And it's like just let's help help spread the word and, and let's get this thing done done.
[00:42:19] Unknown:
Yeah. Absolutely. And I think, it's it's being a commissioner and working with commissioner's court in the entire county falls within even working with the city, working with the school district. I don't know if you've seen a lot of I'm sure you have. I mean, you're a teacher, and this is why it's great that we have a teacher that's here. There's been a lot of of controversy, you know, coming along with especially with all the incidents happening with Armando Serna and, of course, these these prank shooting threats, and then, of course, tensions between city and and and county and school district. And we have the school district getting attacked on things. And, of course, you know, you you have signs of, you know, people wanting Citi to get involved with the the ISD. It looks it just looks like a total struggle, there. So, I guess my question to you would be, you know, what's your take on all of this chaos, especially going on with with what what recently happened? We know that, we well, first of all, I don't know if you can talk about it. If you can't, I get it.
But, you know, we've had people that were that were disciplined for it. Mhmm. And yet there are still some entities that want more, whether it could be releasing a student's, info, which that's because that falls under FERPA. You know? That falls under FERPA. Definitely. Yeah. What is your what is your thought process on this, and how, if you're elected, how can you advocate for, you know, working with everybody, whether the school district or with the city, especially with something like that that's going on. I mean, I think we've seen we've seen a lot of, repercussions and and, you know, ISD, I think, in my eyes I know people are gonna get mad at me, but I I can see that the ISD is doing something about it. Some people disagree.
What's what's your take on that?
[00:44:19] Unknown:
Okay. Well, I'm blessed that I am in the safety committee that the district put together, shortly after, the the Uvalde massacre. I'm we meet on, I think it's every three week three weeks, three months. And it's a safety committee where they invite the city, the sheriff, the Kickapoo, DPS, I believe customs has been there, and, border patrol. There is all the entities come together. Mister Mijares, brings in. That's a committee where they start dialoguing of, hey. Let's set something in protocol. Every time something happens, the school district is very proactive in getting on it.
Let's, something came up. Let's add to it to it. Nobody is a 100% perfect perfect. You can practice. We do lockdown shelter in place place. You can practice that the shooter is gonna come in through the front door. You can only practice which what's out there in the in the nation, what protocol are we following, and the district does a really good job. On a yearly basis, our, our maps of the school are constantly updated. Every police officer has, an updated map, so you're not second guessing where anybody is. All, the DPS comes into our schools when they're off, or we offer them, I think, for lunch lunch. They can come in when they're on break. They walk through Liberty, and we're like, there's something going on. No. We're just making ourselves present.
At high school, they walk through high school. So I've seen it. And I see when something comes up, they're right there attacking it. Like I said, it's not a full proof. Nobody has a 100%, play program in place because you just don't know how it's gonna come about. We can say everybody, you know, stay in there. Or if there's a fire and everybody exits out through the window and they're waiting outside by the window, you just don't know. It's just and that's just just the nature of the beast. You don't know. You can prepare as much as we can, and they're very proactive at letting us get on. We have people that come into the district and, are constantly doing checks without ever anybody knowing. The state comes in. And, my, our doors are always locked where that was not what the state recommended.
The district took it upon themselves, lock your doors. So we did something a little more than was expected from the state. So, I know that every time the, what happened in Serna, there's protocol in place. And I think it's it's, my foremost interest is obviously the safety of the the children. Everybody is. I mean, they're my children. When they walk in that door, they're my children, and every teacher in the district can attest to that to that. That. We become very protective of our children. We call them when I say, oh, it's my kids my kids. My husband has to ask me, okay. Wait. Your school kids or your or your own kids? Go. They're my kids. And so the parents I I don't I don't think the parents realize how much how much my coworkers are my all the other teachers in the school district.
It's it's a it's a something very, internal motherly or or parent that that we protect our kids, our school kids. And, I mean, two teachers died. Many other teachers have died protecting their children. And that's just instinct that kicks in. We get the the protocol, the procedures in place. As soon as something, you know, goes out. Here's this is what we're doing doing. That's why you're getting more notices because something comes up, and that's why I believe mister Mijares says that because I like criticism because I know we're we're failing, and we need to implement it. We need to up the bar every single time. You live and learn learn. There is no full crew plan. You live and learn learn. But this malicious attack against the district is ridiculous because all the teachers work really hard. It's it's a different environment.
And, I mean, we go above and beyond. We're not in it we're not in it to be teachers to go against the the the kids or go against the parents. We're in it because, obviously, we love our jobs jobs, and we have some very hardworking teachers. The district, we compare with San Antonio, one of the Alamo Heights, and we are faired very well. Our scores also compare very strict. Our considering that being a border town, we should be ranked statistically, we should be ranked in the lower we're a big district. Liberty is an a district. We just got recognized.
It's it's I'm very proud of my school district because when I go to conventions and I'm I meet with other districts, we haven't had a rip a reduced in in force because they have enough foresight to save that money and to invest, and they are investing on the safety. They put everything in place. Something goes down, boom. Boom. It's taken care of. They're very proactive. So I think it's a fence when they attack the district because they attack thousands of teachers. So we're we're doing as best we can with what comes up as soon as it comes up, it's in place.
[00:50:06] Unknown:
I'm sorry about that. I wasn't meaning to interrupt you. Were you were you about to say something? No. No. No. And
[00:50:12] Unknown:
go ahead.
[00:50:14] Unknown:
Can you guys hear me? Yeah. I can hear you now. I wanna No. That is true. I mean, teachers are just doing their job. They take care of their children. They're educating little minds, big minds. You know? I mean, let them do their job. And instead of arguing and, you know, and attacking, get together and see if you can put in your ideas, but that's it. You know? Like
[00:50:33] Unknown:
Come in and let's cooperate. Let's not attack each other. Why don't you come and give me a suggestion? And mister Mijares opened it up for the parents. And that's what I like that hey. Open it up. He has an open door policy policy. And they come and they come, well, listen. This is going on. They, when you they question, well, what happened? Well, this is perfect, guys. We're not gonna tell on the kid. We're not gonna share the name. That's just that's juvenile. It's like there's laws in play. They have rights to Yes.
[00:51:03] Unknown:
Yes. Because you never know. Something could happen. Like, if they do reveal the the the child who wrote the note and don't want to send it, whoever, like, kids kids are,
[00:51:12] Unknown:
you know, they're I'm not I I I'm not dogging the kids. I'm dogging the parents. It always starts at home. Yeah. It's a kid who starts at home. And I was like, we have them for one year. We have them for one year. Sometimes I've had them twice.
[00:51:25] Unknown:
Yeah. But,
[00:51:26] Unknown:
you never know. If the parents tell them the rest of their lives.
[00:51:30] Unknown:
Yeah. You'll never know. These kids, if it is revealed and these kids find out, it's almost like prison. You know what I mean? They find out what they did, and then you get jumped for it or you get copied. You know what I mean? And then that's a good that's a good thing that, you know, that that that's there to protect the kids no matter what happened. Mhmm. It might not be we might not like what the kid did, but in the end, it is a kid. Again, it does start with the parents and it starts with the home. I can attest that, you know, mister Mihadez has an open door policy. I mean, Vero and I were there when we interviewed him, that whole debacle with the forget forgetting the chief of police name.
Honestly, I I know he had a brain fart, man. Everybody's got a brain fart. I have brain farts all the time. Yeah. He has a lot of things to do. You know? A lot of schools also. Yes. Exactly. And he has he has an open door policy. We see parents there. They're where are they? Who are you gonna go talk to? Oh, we're gonna go talk to the superintendent. Everybody was there for the superintendent. So he he and he reinstated himself. Like, yeah. I I mean, I whoever wants to come and talk to me on the door, that's why I'm here. That's why my desk looks like a mess.
[00:52:33] Unknown:
Well, Darrence, if you guys have an opinion, you guys wanna talk to him, go ahead and go visit him at his office.
[00:52:39] Unknown:
Yeah. But, you know, the I cannot help but feel like the attacks that are going on for the district, it's it's a move by one political group trying to get power. I'm calling it what it is. It is that's what it is. We just need to attack attack. I'm sorry. I'm gonna get matched with this, but that's I'm like, You're always coming out. Oh, let's go district this. Dude, we're we're doing a lot of good stuff. Mhmm. We we just had a a the football team, they did amazing. The kids are progressing. The kids are going to school. They're going to college. They're coming back, and and being professionals.
I was like, let's let's let's hype our kids up. It but that's what I see. And I was like, it's one, political group wanting to move on on parliament. Let's just work together, guys, at the end of the day. Like, why do we need this?
[00:53:31] Unknown:
I am, like, so glad that we're not the only ones talking about that. It's like, we dress the elephant in the room, and there it is. You know, we can go all night about that, but this is about you and your campaign. And I and I really love how, you know, we can compare this, how you're, you know, you're very dedicated to your job and your work. You even gave us, you know, some pros and some cons My dog needs a Oh, no. Don't trust me. I have my little dog here a little while ago, Lex. He was jumping at me right now. I had to pick him up for a little bit. This is cheap lado. I did see him. Yeah. Well, he's he's down there now. So but, like, I love how you, you know, you you kinda summarized, what goes on with the school district. And and, of course, nobody's perfect. That's I think that's the very biggest keyword is nobody's perfect. You know? Mister Mijares isn't perfect. There's some things that I disagree with, and he knows it. I've told him that before. He knows. Oh, yeah. He's he's cool with it. Like, okay. He doesn't agree with me. I can't I can't talk to others that way either. And I'm not This isn't about them. I'm not gonna mention them. But there are few that I've had plenty of disagreements with, and they don't like it. And that sucks because now now every time I see you, whether it's at an event or whatever, you just you get those looks. And They take it personal. I mean, we're not hating. We're just doing our job. Yeah. Absolutely. And we tell you know, we're telling the truth. And if there's something that you don't like, you know, you can always call me. That's fine. Or don't, you know, don't threaten me. If you won't threaten me, that's something else.
But, you know, you got my number. Say, hey. You know what? Let's talk about what you said the other day. And I'm gonna be like, well, is it true? And if you say yes, then that then we have nothing to talk about. So it is one of your
[00:55:17] Unknown:
Yeah. The good thing about this is that we have smart people out there. You know, they might think they're pulling one over, but we have smart smart people out there, and they see it. I mean, you have the blowing out of proportion of this. I'm like, come on. Let's move on. Let's get progress. Let's move on. Let's go on to the next thing. Let's let's try to just help each other. How can you make me better? How can I make you better better? Let's work together. At the end of the day, that's a successful
[00:55:46] Unknown:
Yeah. Unit. And doing this in a group with you and and, like I said, having you summarize things, like, in the school district and that, you know, that kind of well proves that you can do the same thing with the county, you know, with your precinct. Yeah. Yeah. And you can you can work together with others, and I'm sure you get along good along with mister Biati too, the constable. And Yeah. Yeah. You can put aside you're you're pretty much proven that you can put aside differences and work together with those. So I really like that.
[00:56:12] Unknown:
Yeah. You have to be after being thirty three years, I mean, you catch more bees with honey. But, I we have an end result, and that's to make Maverick County. Like I said, the dual that we know it can be. And that's what you're gonna get from this leadership. If I'm elected, you're gonna get a leadership that's not for sale, and that's for the constituents. I am gonna work for them, not for anybody else. Because I like I said, I'm a migrant. I I grew up migrant. I know what it is to work for your money. I grew up in one house. People ask me, where was I born? I was born in Eagle Pass, but but I was born across on on the across from the high school, the the the housing.
I was I think it's 57. So every time I walk by, I was raised I was, brought by a a midwife. So every time I passed through that, I was like, shit. Little me was born there. So, I mean, I come from humble beginnings, but that never shied me from hard work. I mean, I was working at 10 years old in the field field. Like like, five in the morning to five in the evening. We did that in April all the way till, I think, October when we drove back. We did we, did cucumbers. We did, which is the the the sweet the sugar beets. And then we did Minnesota. We did the Olympias. Then we went to California. My dad did the.
And then by the time we came back in Tegel Pass, was everybody had their clicks and you were the new girl again and, you know, all over again. What y'all do this summer? Oh, we went on vacation. We did this. Yeah. I did fields fields. You have the proof. And for the longest time, my kids kid me because I say, you know, I just don't like yellow buses. And they're like, well, why, mom? Just because I would see the kids in summer school singing that the wheels on the bus go round and round, and I'm always here falling and thinking.
[00:58:11] Unknown:
So I have a bad taste of the wheels on the bus because I was working. Oh, yeah. But that's always a good song to have in my head when I need to just, like, you know, meditate because the wheels on the bus just turns all the time. But, so we'll summarize that we're at we're at 58. So we're almost we're almost about to wrap up. But you know what? We definitely wanna keep an eye on your campaign. This is something that we're very interested in. And, again, we wanna keep an eye on everyone's campaign. If you have a launch party, let us know. We definitely wanna be a part of it. I sure will. And so we summarized. We talked about, why you wanted to run. We've talked about a little bit about your background. We've gotten your your in your insight on, you know, different political entities clashing with each other and, you know, and I I I just loved how you made it clear. I feel like the ISD just didn't have a voice at all. And, you know, we kinda wanna give them that voice a little bit. It just depends on if they wanna work with us. It's, you know I think mister Mijares was was really cool about, interviewing us. I really didn't think, you know, he would I thought he would be a little bit skittish about it, but he's just like, no. Come in. I'll, you know, throw that mic on. Let's talk. I'm like, okay.
[00:59:15] Unknown:
You know? So And that's what I like, that he's never afraid to to fix the music. If something happened, hey. Hey. Let's get better at it. And there was something we talked to Baltimore. Let's get a bit let's get a bit of the next time around. But, pretty cool.
[00:59:29] Unknown:
Yeah. Yeah. It was pretty cool. You know? Like I said, I mean, we've like I said, we've had our we've had our differences. You know? We've talked about stuff, and we've had, you know, some he'll tell me that, you know, I said something I probably you know, that he didn't like, and then, you know, he we, you know, we were at a disagreement. But then, you know, the next day or whenever, we'll come and we'll interview, and we're fine. We we let bygones be bygones. And that's the way it should be. Yeah. We should be we should be, as a parent and as constituents, should be allowed to give us to give our criticism on our leaders. You know? Yeah. That's our democracy. We get to question.
[01:00:02] Unknown:
Exactly. We get to question and where we don't like, we we go I mean, I brought several issues from teachers that come and tell me, and, we don't like this. We don't and I'll go in front of a school board and no question and and, he'll address it. He even had, meet the teacher not meet the teacher, meet the superintendent, and I invite all the teachers.
