Hiring a Podcast Editor

You're almost ready to start talking with editors. Over the past few episodes, you've gone through the process of clarifying the goal you're shooting for and any gaps that might exist. You've identified some things you'd like an editor to help you with and even started prioritizing things.

But before you start looking for an editor, manager, or producer, there are three things I think you should consider. We're going to cover the first one this week.

What will you focus on next?

Or put another way, what will you do with all your free time?

While this might seem like a "throwaway" question, it's incredibly important because it not only helps you identify the value of bringing a podcast editor, manager, or producer into your production, but it also helps you actually maintain your focus as you navigate the transition you're about to go through.

You've gone through the process of getting clear on what you're looking for in an editor,

and that actually sets you up pretty well.

A lot of people don't do that.

And I would say that you're probably almost ready to start talking with editors over the past few episodes.

You've gone through the process of clarifying the goal that you're shooting for.

You've highlighted some gaps that might exist.

You've also identified some things that you'd like to have an editor or a producer or a podcast manager help you.

And you've even started prioritizing things, but before you start going out to find that best editor, that manager,

that producer, there are three things I think you should

consider.

We're going to cover the

first one in this episode, and then we'll cover the other two in the next two episodes.

The

first one I'm going to ask you to

consider is.

What will you focus on next or put another way?

What are you going to do with all

your free time?

Now I realize, say that kind of jokingly, because there may not be a lot of free time, but you will

be getting back some portion of your time and some portion of your focus and that kind of stuff.

And if you've been taking notes, as we've been going along, you may already have a pretty good idea.

If you've been filling that out.

That's great.

You may actually have a really good idea what you're looking for now.

I do have some other suggestions I'm going to give you, but I would suggest that the first thing you do

is consider the things you've already done, because

those are going to be the most

specific to your needs, to what you're looking for, because that.

The most important

part, I'm going to provide some

ideas and some things to think about, but what's really important is

that what you do is what's aligned best for you.

I will say the first thing I suggest that you focus on as you've been bringing on an editor.

Is just getting that working relationship up and running.

Sometimes it can take a little bit of time to learn how to communicate well with each

other and to work well with each other.

You've both been saying probably some words back and forth about what you're looking for and

what they give and all of that kind of stuff.

But it can take a little bit of time to make sure that those words can translate into concrete actions

that deliver the result that you're looking for.

So I would suggest that you make.

One of the one to three

things you're going to focus on

first.

After that I would suggest that you focus on either something that will move you toward your ideal future.

What we defined in episode number two, which was the magic wand question for your podcast, or maybe something that's been kind

of falling off your plate, or hasn't been getting the attention you'd like, which is what we talked about in episode five.

And you can choose something from that list.

And as you think about this, just think.

In that first say 30, 60 days, 90 days, something like that.

What would you want to focus on after you've been bringing that editor to, to work with you now?

It's perfectly okay.

If the thing you want to focus on is maybe getting some of your relationships, right.

As a podcast, or sometimes our relationships can be damaged, right?

So sometimes we take time from other relationships from friendships, maybe even time from family or.

Building a business or some of those kinds of things.

So as you think about this, don't feel constrained to only do the things that move your podcast forward.

Think about the things that are important to you and the future that you're wanting to experience.

Pick those one to three things that you think will bring you closer to that.

Now, why do I say one to three?

Well, the answer is pretty simple and maybe it doesn't apply to you.

But what I find for myself is that when I pick too many things to focus on nothing gets the focus or.

I'm basically just lying to myself.

I

say, I'm going to do these

five or seven or 29 different things, whatever the number is.

And the reality is I'm

probably going to pick one

or two of those that are

actually going to get some

attention anyway.

And the rest of the time, I'll just feel really bad about all the things that didn't get my attention.

So I would suggest that you choose something that's right for you.

One to three is what I, I would try to do.

That's what I would recommend if 19 is the right answer for you, then pick 19, but pick that.

One thing or those few things that you want to focus on, because that will help you maintain your

focus as you start going through this transition.

Because like I said, it is really easy to lose sight of the things that are so important to us

when we're going through a transition like this.

And it will also start to help you understand the value that your editor is bringing.

We've talked about the value that an editor brings or a podcast manager and things like focus and time back.

Expertise, all that kind of stuff.

This is another thing that they're bringing is your ability to focus on these things, to help move

your show or your business or your relationships or whatever it is that you're wanting to focus on forward.

Then once you've found the right person, you can start using these things to go.
