Be that as it may, I'm glad to say that in this story, it was unpleasant. And never was a comeuppance more richly deserved. Sid, it's her or us. Thomas de Quincy, the English author, once wrote an essay on this subject. It was titled murder as one of the fine arts. A quote from that article is, if once a man indulges himself in murder, very soon he comes to think very little of robbing. We have the opposite side of the coin. The robbing has been done, but will murder be something that Sid or Alice can consider worth so little thinking? I shall return shortly with act two. Now let me see where were we a compulsive gambler has lost $50,000 that did not belong to him worse still the money was in payment of a debt from a bookie to a gangster.
The gambler Sid Parks has an aunt whose death would enrich him by twice what he owes in insurance money. And because he must hide to save his life, he has fled to join this aunt in a quiet suburb of Boston. How long he can remain hidden there from the forces of retribution is problematical. To solve that problem and the larger one, Sid's woman has offered the only solution. The aunt, Esther Gardner, must die. The only question left now is how.
