40 flight patrol. Now I don't mean the official junior pilot application card with the mysterious code words on the back, And I don't mean the burnished bronze medal of membership with the 3 blade spinning propeller and the secret password. Both of these are free too, of course. But now I'm talking about a special free present that captain Midnight is going to give besides these other things I have already told you about. What it's going to be, I can't tell you now, but I will tell you this much. It's 1 of the most strange and fascinating things you've ever seen anywhere. You'll swear it's actually alive.
But enough of that. The important thing right now is this. You must be a member of the flight patrol before you can get this free present I'm talking about. So what you wanna do now is be sure you have joined the new 1940 flight patrol so you'll have your official junior pilot's application card and your spinning propeller medal of membership to prove you're a full fledged member. Then you know you'll be entitled to take part in the big adventure with Chuck Ramsey and Patsy Donovan and also get that exciting free present that will be announced real soon now for every member. So if you haven't already joined, remember, here's all you do. You don't need a single penny. No box tops, no seals, not even a penny for a stamp. You just stop at your Skelly service station the next time you're out in the family car and tell your Skelly man you wanna join the new 1940 flight patrol. He'll give you your junior pilot's card right away and see to it that you get your spinning propeller medal just as soon as possible. And you'll put your name on the list for the next free presents that Captain Midnight is getting ready right now to offer you over the air on this program.
But remember, it'll be for members only, so join up at your Skelly service station tonight. And now to captain Midnight. Yesterday, you remember, captain Midnight and Chuck finally succeeded in locating Patsy and Ma Donovan after they escaped from the cabin. En garde in the darkness nearby are Pinky Drake and Slim Pull. Captain Midnight had just decided to take their prisoner, the pilot Sollinger, to a new hiding place in the mountains when Ma Donovan suddenly screamed that the supposedly injured man was escaping. Arsene today takes up the chase as Pinky's voice is heard at the distance.
[00:03:07] Unknown:
Oh, yes, we're running.
[00:03:09] Unknown:
Sir, I can't see very good at the dark. Wait, Pinky, over to your left. I'm a brilliant wizard. If it ain't capital midnight, Ken. Great seater, both sides. Sure. Glad to hear his voice. Alright. Never mind that. Quick. Which way did he go? Jesus immediately, like, he went up the hill. I slimmed. He went up the hill. Well, I don't see nothing now. It's dark. You can't see more than a few feet. Gosh, man. This is bad. If that fellow gets back to shock, he may ruin all our plans. He couldn't get away very fast. Well, if you ask me, he's gone plenty far with this thing. Well, there's no way of finding him tonight. We better get going outside.
[00:03:41] Unknown:
Jump in. She's over the place. What's up? Well, sure. That can be hard 10 miles away.
[00:03:48] Unknown:
Quick. Why your equation on the police, Slim? There ain't nothing on you. The heck, Barry? Quick, swag it. Throw your flashlight on him, Chuck. Quick. Yeah. Look at poor old Slim Shadowbox. Why your tent is getting ready to buy a jolting with. Well, state of life. Look at Slim's face. Why it's all cut up. Oh, what in the carnation was it, Slim? Seems to me
[00:04:43] Unknown:
that I've seen something moving in the hole and I stuck my hand in and the next second I was fighting with something. I bet it was a wildcat. Well, whatever it was, it sure had sharp claws. Well, I guess our prison is gone now. Yes. And we've got to get out of here too. We stay around here, we'll have all the shark's men to contend with. And as soon as that escaped parrot gets to some of his friends, he'll lead them back here. Alright. Now listen, everyone. We're gonna start on a hard march. Chuck and I will go first because we know the way. Missus Donovan, you and Patsy will follow immediately behind us. Sure. And we'll be right at your heels. Okay, Red? Fine. Pinky, you and Slim bring up the rear. We won't let no 1 get near us. You can bet on that. Yeah. You mean I won't. I'll never forget the time when Pinky was supposed to be guarding camp. Alright now. It wasn't like he was gonna tell it was. Least wise, I don't get in the fight with myself. Alright. Come on now. You 2. You can fight some other time. We've got a big job at our hands.
Are you ready, Chuck? All set, Ben. Come on now. Here we go. And don't lose track of each other for even an instant. What time is it, Chuck? Just a second while I look at my wristwatch.
[00:05:50] Unknown:
It's 5 minutes of 3, Red. Almost 3 o'clock.
[00:05:53] Unknown:
That means we've been on the trail well over 2 hours. It's been pretty tough for Ma Red, walking like this since midnight, and we've been going uphill most of the time.
[00:06:00] Unknown:
I heard that, Chuck Ramsey, and I ain't a bit tired. I can keep on going a couple of hours more. Just the same, missus Donovan. I think we're gonna call a halt.
[00:06:08] Unknown:
This looks like a good sheltered spot. You bet it is. Oh, look, Chuck. There are some red pine trees. Oh, it's sure, and it smelled just like the hills near Black Gulch. Anything wrong, Red? No, Slim. We're gonna stop for arrest as well. Did you sure swell please see the ass me? Look. Under those pine trees, the needles are still fit. Yes, sir. Come on over this way, everyone. Get out your pocket, Chuck. Here it is. We're gonna cut off a couple of these pine branches from missus Donovan Goliath. Come on, Sam. We'll get a couple or 2. Now here's 1, Red. I'll hold it down while you cut it off. That's the number.
[00:06:38] Unknown:
Half broken in 2 or rumbled. Alright.
[00:06:40] Unknown:
I'll cut it off. Hold it. Yeah. Hold this, Dickie.
[00:06:43] Unknown:
Oh, sure. That's plenty. If you give me any more, I think I'm back on the feather bed at home. Well, here's 1 more for good measure.
[00:06:50] Unknown:
Oh, send me that 1, Red, and I'll put it with the other. Alright. There you are.
[00:06:54] Unknown:
Oh, come on, Mars. Alright. But it really ain't necessary at all.
[00:06:58] Unknown:
Oh, I'm half asleep all day. How long is it gonna be here, Ed? Well, I thought until just before daybreak. Well, that'll be about 2 hours. Yeah. Less than that down in this country. I don't think anyone's been following us. Do you think he? No. I don't think so. Slim and I have been pretty careful. And you didn't hear a thing?
[00:07:15] Unknown:
Not a thing. No. We didn't. I guess it'll be alright to stay here for a while. Don't you think, Red? Yes. I think so. Now then, we might as well divide up the next 2 hours. Hours. You mean for guard duty? That's what I mean. Oh, how many do you want on guard at a time? 2 for safety's sake. Alright. Suppose you and I take the first hour, Ed, and Pinky and Slim can take the last 1. Yeah. Suits me. Of course, Pinky will go to sleep. And you?
[00:07:37] Unknown:
I don't think there's any danger of either 1 of you going to sleep. That is if you can keep that argument up for another hour. Come on, you old curmudgeon.
[00:07:44] Unknown:
You Come on, old curmudgeon. Well, now listen to me. You won't put for nothing rash.
[00:07:49] Unknown:
Oh, gee. They sure are a great pair, aren't they, Red? Yes. You bet they are. And if it hadn't been for their quick thinking, Patsy and Ma might not have gotten out of that shack alive. Well, come on, kid. Let's sit down against the trunk of this tree and relax. Okay.
[00:08:05] Unknown:
Sure feels good to get off on one's feet. Hey. This night here is kinda cool. Do you think we ought to light a fire? Oh, no, Chuck. No. Can't tell who's prowling around it. And, anyway, we've only got 2 hours to wait. Yeah. Gee, Red. What's the matter?
[00:08:17] Unknown:
Nothing, Chuck. Nothing I I'm just thinking about major Steven Conley. They've either made it or they haven't. I thought about them several times while we were climbing up the trail. An awful lot depends on them, man. Almost everything, Chuck. Between you and me and this tree, I have my doubts. As to whether they'll get there or not? Yes, Chuck. That gas, remember? I remember only too well. Do you remember how that engine overheated? That I do. And this time, they've gotta fly 5 or 6 hours. Yes. 5 or 6 hours. Okay. Let's play there and make it. We've told the rest of them that major still be back here by noon today. I know that. I didn't wanna discourage them by telling the truth. What do we say if they're not back by noon? Well, we'll just say they've probably been delayed. Okay.
And in that case, well, we'll have to face a tough situation. Okay, Red. We'll face it when it comes. Which won't be long. I can tell you
[00:09:04] Unknown:
that. And almost at the same instant, across the towering ridge to the east, a different scene is taking place. A smoking oil lamp casts a flickering glow on the interior of a hut. Behind the rude table sits the criminal, live in shock. Near him sits his daughter, Fury. And on guard before the barred door stands his servant. Bang. Listen as Fury says.
[00:09:31] Unknown:
I do know Billy Van Grif is coming, father. Nonsense, Fury. You mean to imply that Van Grif would disobey my command? Bang. Yes, Martha? Did you send the message to Van Gripp? Message it was sent, Martha. Good. Then Van Gripp will be here.
[00:09:46] Unknown:
If you were not so sure of yourself, father, I would tell you something for your own good.
[00:09:54] Unknown:
Spoken just like a woman, Fury, but go ahead. What is this for my own good?
[00:10:00] Unknown:
Sometimes I do not believe that Van Gripp is working entirely for you.
[00:10:07] Unknown:
And who else would he be working for? Do not forget,
[00:10:10] Unknown:
Van Grippe owes his first allegiance to Russo. But he is working for me now.
[00:10:15] Unknown:
I wonder. Martha? Yes, sir. I hear a footsteps outside, Martha. Silence.
[00:10:22] Unknown:
If it is done great, he will give the signal.
[00:10:26] Unknown:
Answer him, Fang.
[00:10:28] Unknown:
Now we will see.
[00:10:30] Unknown:
Open the door, Fang. Yes, my friend. Ah, so it is you, Van Wiep. Who is that with him? Who is that with you, Van Wryp? 1 you will be glad to see, chief. Bring him closer. Close the door thing. Yep. My back.
[00:10:48] Unknown:
Look. It's the new pilot, Solingen.
[00:10:51] Unknown:
So it is Solingen. Yes, chief. He made his escape about 3 hours ago. This is excellent. Things are going our way at last. That crowd used him as a shield when they got out of that shack across the ridge. So they escaped it, they? I gave orders on you. Orders exactly, But the mother and daughter and those 2 old fogies they had with them all came out using our man, Zollinger, as a shield. The boys couldn't shoot at them without killing him. Where did they take Solingen? They hid out in a cave up beside the hill. Later on, about the middle of the night, they left him alone for a minute and he escaped. Have you sent men to the place to capture the Donovan? Yes. But they aren't there.
[00:11:28] Unknown:
I'll ask him a question to myself. Now then, Zollinger, did you overhear your captors talking? Yes. He did. He's nodding his head. Did they say which way they were going?
[00:11:39] Unknown:
Nodding his head again. Which way were they going? Look. He's going to the west. But he's in the opposite direction to 1 far right at the stage. Yes. That is strange but true.
[00:11:50] Unknown:
I wonder what this means. But never fear, my dear Furey. I shall soon find out.
[00:12:00] Unknown:
Well, this is strange indeed. Zollinger must have heard captain Midnight plan to take refuge in Juan Paredes hunting lodge, but he has deliberately misled his chief, Ivan Sharp, by telling him captain Midnight's party is making their escape in the opposite direction. Have our friends found an ally in the opposite camp? Tune in tomorrow to captain Midnight. And now don't forget, before long, captain Midnight will be ready to let me announce an amazing free present, a strange, fascinating, and mysterious gift for every full fledged member of the new 1940 flight patrol. But meantime, the thing for you to do is to be sure your name is on the list of members. If it isn't, you'd better see your Skelly man and join up tonight because you need your official Junior Pilots card and your spinning propeller medal of membership before you can get this new free press. You need them also to take part in the thrilling adventure that's ahead and to figure out the meaning of the mysterious secret password on the back of your spinning propeller metal together with the strange code words on the back of your junior pilot's card. [00:13:41] Unknown:
happy landing.
