[00:00:57] Unknown:
Greetings from Hollywood, ladies and gentlemen. Tonight's recipe for your enjoyment is melodrama. That spine tingling compound of mystery, murder, and romance, Key Largo. It brings back to this theater a famous star of melodrama on both stage and screen, mister Edward g Robinson. And Key Largo gives Eddie the kind of part he made famous in the days of Little Caesar. Costarring with him are Claire Trevor, who repeats the brilliant performance which won her an Academy Award in the picture, and Edmund O'Brien, an actor with a fine talent for action drama.
Maxwell Anderson was the author of the stage play, and Warner Brothers repeated the Broadway success with their screen version. You know, it takes just the right ingredients and the playwright's know how to make a successful drama, and it takes just the right ingredients and scientific know how to make a product like Luxe toilet soap. But women everywhere recognize its quality and, like nine out of 10 screen stars, choose Luxe toilet soap as their own complexion care. It's curtain time, and here is act one of Key Largo, starring Edward g Robinson as Johnny Rocco, Claire Trevor as gay, and Edmund O'Brien as Frank.
At the southernmost point of The United States are the Florida Keys, a string of small islands connected by a concrete causeway. Largest of these remote islands is Key Largo. Key Largo has very few visitors this time of year. It's midsummer, and the old wooden hotel is drowsing in the heat. But there are guests in the hotel. A few men and a girl gathered at the little bar just off the lobby. And now a newcomer walks in.
[00:03:11] Unknown:
Okay, Jack. What do you want? I just got off the bus. The proprietor around, mister Temple? He ain't here. The hotel's closed. When will he be back? I don't know. Oh, so for hot. How about a beer? Bar's closed. That's right, Jack. Everything's closed in the summertime.
[00:03:26] Unknown:
Give him a drink.
[00:03:29] Unknown:
You heard me. Give him a drink. Oh, thank you. Oh, please.
[00:03:33] Unknown:
Take another helmet. Wake up, Toots. The buzzer. I hear it. Mister Brown wants his drink. Oh, his drink. He has oh, put plenty of ice. Plenty of ice. Listen. I I'll take it up to him. When he wants you, he'll send for you. I know he will. I know that. Well, turn on the radio. It's almost time for the races. You just wait and see that first race. It's, fancy freak. That's the one. He'll just walk away with it. Yeah. Yeah. Sure. You know why?
[00:04:02] Unknown:
They've been holding him back his last two.
[00:04:05] Unknown:
Today, he wins. Hey, fella. What do you think? You play the party? Me? No. Why not? Well, I haven't got the money. Here's what I wanna tell you. I play the long shots because you see, we're betting on the favorite. What what he wins? Now for instance, take take this fancy free. You know the odds? 20 to one. Real long shot. Say,
[00:04:29] Unknown:
what's her name? McLeod. Frank McLeod.
[00:04:31] Unknown:
Oh, I'm miss Dawn. Miss gay Dawn. Okay, miss Dawn. He wants you upstairs. Oh oh, he wants me. I better,
[00:04:43] Unknown:
excuse me, please. Look, mister. If you're thinking of putting up here, the hotel's closed. Well, I don't plan to stay here. I just wanna see mister Temple. Oh, I'd just say so. He's outside, not the dock. Yeah. At the boathouse. Thanks. I'll go see him.
[00:04:59] Unknown:
That's right, brother. I'm mister Timpoon. My name is McLeod. Frank McLeod. McLeod? Frank. Make him McLeod. Nora. Nora, come here. When did you get here? Few minutes ago. I'm on my way to Key West. Nora, look who's here. This is Major Frank McLeod. And this is Nora. This is George's wife. Your husband and I were in the same outfit overseas. As if she didn't know. I wrote you a letter, major, but it came back. Well, I haven't been staying put very long. Ever been down here before? No, sir. She cools off some come November. Right livable then for about three months. How long you gonna be with her? Oh, for an hour or so till the next budget. An hour? Why, you you could spare us more time than that shortly. Well, I don't know. At least. Sure you will. He can have George's room, darling. Yes, dad. Of course. Oh, it looks as if we have more company. Hi. Oh, a local police, major. They're looking for a couple of Indians. Afternoon.
Any sign of the Arceola brothers? Sorry, Ben. No sign of them around here. I want you and Clyde to meet my son's commanding officer. This is Major McLough. I see. How are you doing? Major.
[00:06:02] Unknown:
If you don't mind, mister Temple, we'd like to have a look around. Was I you, I'd save myself to trouble. They all give themselves up by morning. We're all quiet if mister Temple says ain't here. Ain't here. Sorry to bother you, mister Temple.
[00:06:15] Unknown:
Such a fuss over a couple of harmless Indians.
[00:06:18] Unknown:
Nora's right, major. They just got a little snoop full and started to take Florida back for the Seminole. Well, I sent word for them to come here and give themselves up. It's not that I'm supposed to know where they are. You understand? Well, let's get inside and cool off. You mind giving me a hand? Be glad to. George told me how you were sort of crippled up. Yeah. My legs. Tree fell on a mate years ago. Hurricane.
[00:06:42] Unknown:
Been no good for anything ever since. I'll go and see about your roommate. Thanks. Thanks a lot.
[00:06:57] Unknown:
Hi, mister Temple.
[00:06:59] Unknown:
I see the fellow found you okay. And Major McLeod here, he was my son's commanding officer overseas. Yeah. Yeah. They were in the Italian campaign together. My, boy George was killed at a casino. Yeah? What's going on up there? Nora, what is it? It's miss Dawn. Case of one's too many, pop. Miss Dawn drinks too much. You had no right to give her. If you people can't behave yourself, you gotta leave. Oh, don't worry about it, pop. She'll behave. You got the room ready, Nora? Maybe the major would like to wash up. Yes. It's ready.
[00:07:33] Unknown:
This way, please. Up the stairs. Thanks. Say, these other guests, how long have they been here? Three days. That's their yacht you saw off the pier. Mister Brown's yacht.
[00:07:44] Unknown:
Which one is mister Brown? Oh, he's in his room.
[00:07:47] Unknown:
Rich, I guess, from the way they all jump when he lifts a finger. He's a lady killer, or he thinks he is. Anyway, they'll be leaving soon. Well, here's your room. Major, were you with George when he died?
[00:08:04] Unknown:
Yes. I was.
[00:08:06] Unknown:
Did he
[00:08:07] Unknown:
did he suffer a lot? No. No. He never knew what hit him. I was afraid he might. Can I come in? Yeah. Sure. Come on in. Come down to dad's office when you're ready, major. So you're staying the night. I'm Curly Hoff. I, I hope you're not sore. I mean, the way we handle you downstairs. Oh, I'm not sore about anything. I guess you're wondering what we're doing here. I don't suppose it's any of my business. We come down from Milwaukee. The four of us deep sea fishing. More than a year, we've been planning this trip. So what happens, the Blanche shows up. If she isn't drunk and crying, then she's got a hangover and arguing. Now why ask? You kid your blameless for not being nice and polite? No. I don't blame you. You, you're you're going downstairs. Let's have a little drink. Well, not right now. Thanks. Well, come on, Jack. Just to show there's no high fee hey, miss.
Was you just talking on the telephone? Yes. Coast Guard call. Oh, I thought maybe it was for one of us. The storm signal drops. Hurricane's on its way. You see what I mean, mister hurricane? Yeah. Dad's in here, major, in the office. Sit down, major. Sit down. The war's over, mister Temple. I'm not a major anymore. Well, I guess you wanna know about George. He's a good soldier, mister Temple. You can be proud of I always was. George was a born hero, I guess. It's a wonder he lasted till casino. But when you believe like George believed, maybe dying isn't very important. Well, he talked a lot about both of you. You'd be surprised how much I know.
[00:09:32] Unknown:
What's it like where
[00:09:34] Unknown:
where George is buried? Sort of pretty and peaceful. Crosses on a slope and high up what's left of a church.
[00:09:41] Unknown:
You can see a river from where George is. I'd like to pay a visit to that place. Maybe someday we can, Deb. Go to Italy and see where George is buried. Deb, there's a storm warning. I'd better see to the boat. Maybe Frank would like to go with you.
[00:09:57] Unknown:
Yeah. Sure.
[00:10:01] Unknown:
Tell me something.
[00:10:02] Unknown:
What brought you down here? Oh, I like the sea, and I thought I'd like to make my living at it. Doing what? Doesn't matter. Life on land is getting too complicated for my taste. What'd you do before the war? Circulation manager for a newspaper. Good job. Didn't you go back to it? Nah. Nah. I couldn't stick to it. I've done a lot of things since. Anything to make a dollar.
[00:10:22] Unknown:
Well, this is our boat to Santana. Not much you can do when it starts to blow like this. Just hope for the best.
[00:10:29] Unknown:
How's your ground tackle off stern? Oh, plenty heavy. I'm gonna double up in these bow lines. Where'd you learn about boats? Oh, my first sweetheart was a boat. See, that yacht out there,
[00:10:40] Unknown:
that's his, Miss Brown? I think he charged it. Better get away from the reefs. Oh, there's a skip report. He ought to know what to do. Hello, miss Nora. What? Tom.
[00:10:49] Unknown:
Hello. And John. Will come here.
[00:10:52] Unknown:
Frank, this is Tom and John Ossio. How do you do?
[00:10:56] Unknown:
We're bad Indians. Miss Nora? Why don't we give ourselves up to police? I'm glad, Tom. Dad says it's the best thing. We do whatever no, miss. All Indians on Crawfish Island come. Best thing when hurricane blows. It's alright, miss Nora. The family stay on hotel porch, not make any bother. Of course. It's alright. Where are they? At home, miss. Well, go tell them. I'll tell them. He'll telephone the police. Yes, miss. Very good.
[00:11:22] Unknown:
They'd do anything at all for them. As far as they're concerned, he's The United States Of America. You're very happy here, aren't you?
[00:11:30] Unknown:
Very.
[00:11:31] Unknown:
Never lonely?
[00:11:33] Unknown:
No. Not anymore. Before George, my life hadn't made much sense. I never had much of a home and didn't like what I had. Well, George George gave me roots. When he went overseas, I came down here to stay with his father and the roots took hold. Now I I'm like one of those men.
[00:11:55] Unknown:
Well, I guess that makes a trick question.
[00:11:57] Unknown:
Oh, here it comes. Come on before we
[00:12:11] Unknown:
Well, I just talked to the Asiota brothers. We're gonna wait out there on the porch. I thought you said the police had come back. Car's down the road alright, but no sign of Ben or Clyde.
[00:12:22] Unknown:
Wonder where they went. Where'd those people go, dad? Up in their room? They're all in the bar.
[00:12:27] Unknown:
Well, this is gonna be an experience for for real Florida hurricane. I'll get it, dad. It's okay, miss. I'll take it. But I said I'll take it.
[00:12:38] Unknown:
Hello? No. Mister Temple's not here now. Of course I'm here. Who is it? Me? I'm a guest at the hotel. No. We haven't seen him. Give me that phone. You heard that. Give her the phone. Make it easy, soldier. Put down that gun. What do you think you're doing here? Shut up. All of you. Okay, sheriff. If Sawyer shows up, I'll have him call you right back. That was Ben Wade. Yeah. I guess it was. He's looking for his deputy. Saint Clive Sawyer must have come here alone at his car down the road. Is it? Then I'm calling Ben right back. You're not phoning anybody, pup. Who are you? Packer thieves? Who's that going away? Come on, Toots. Let's take them upstairs and see mister Brown. Angel, keep your eyes open.
Curley's got him across the hall, boss. The old man, the girl, and the soldier. Well, what happened? Who's on the phone? At the law, sheriff, looking for the deputy. Well, that means it won't be long now. You think this rain would cool things off, but it don't.
[00:13:44] Unknown:
Gonna have a hurricane, Yeah. That's what they say. I will talk to you, mister Brown. Over there, don't come out here.
[00:13:52] Unknown:
Well, now what's all this about? Oh, good evening, mister Temple. Who's the young man? My name's McLeod. I don't want some answers, mister Brown. You want money? Is this a robbery? A lot, Bob. Best be nice and sensible, Now forget the questions. What you don't know won't hurt you. I'm expecting a friend. He ought to get here in a couple of hours now, and then we'll get out of here. Now try and put up with us that long, Well, sister, what are we gonna eat tonight? Pompano, maybe? Am I to understand we're a prisoner? Little while.
You know, back in Chicago in the old days, we used to pay 8 or $10 for an order to Pompano. We used to fly it in. And the way they served it. Yes, sir. All done up in a brown paper bag. Oh, cut any champagne, miss? No champagne, boss. I looked before. Oh, that's too bad. Champagne and Pompano.
[00:14:50] Unknown:
They really go together. Hey, boss. The cut's starting to come around.

[00:15:50] Unknown:
You shouldn't have been deported.
[00:15:53] Unknown:
You should have been exterminated. I'll show you what I'll show you. I apologize to mister Temple. He doesn't know what he's talking about or who to. Sir, Johnny Rocco was a king and emperor. His rule extended over beer, slot machines, the numbers racket, and a dozen other forbidden enterprises. He's a master of the fix. When we couldn't corrupt, he terrified. When we couldn't terrify, he murdered. You melt. You sit it down. Mister Temple, please. Welcome back, mister Rocco. It was all a mistake. America is sorry for what it did to you. Hey. On the level, boss. Were you that big? Yeah. Yeah. That's me. Sure. I was all of those things and more.

We're fighting to cleanse the world of ancient evils, ancient ills. And what's all that about? I remember those words.
[00:17:21] Unknown:
That makes two of us. We rid ourselves of your kind once and for all, Rocco.
[00:17:25] Unknown:
You ain't coming back. We're gonna stop me, old man. Why wasn't we all crippled up? You wouldn't be talking this way. Right, boss? Help you. Help me. Oh, yeah. That's it, boss. Go on. Get him. Go on. Stick him back. Go

On the porch of the modest hotel, a cluster of Indians patiently observe the increasing fury of the hurricane. Inside, the lobby and bar are deserted. Johnny Rocco is going up the stairs.
[00:22:16] Unknown:
Can you talk, Clyde? Are you feeling better? Well,
[00:22:20] Unknown:
I guess I'm alright now, missus Temple. What happened? Go ahead, copper. Tell him. I drove back here alone. I was sure those two Indians were out here somewhere.
[00:22:29] Unknown:
I was near your dock when somebody slugged me.
[00:22:33] Unknown:
And whose room is this? A very famous man. Johnny Rocco's. Rocco's? You heard him, deputy. What did Miami have to say? They're on their way. How are you feeling, cover? You'd give your left eye to nail me, wouldn't you? Local deputy captured Johnny Rucker. You're picturing all the papers. Well, listen, hick. It was too much for any big city police to handle. They tried, but they couldn't. That's right, mister Sawyer. Took the United States government to get Johnny Roberts. Yeah. And I'm back again, ain't I? They threw me out, but now I'm back. And before you know it, I'll be pulling the strings again. I'll be electing mayors and governors before you ever get a $10 raise. Yeah.
How many of those guys in office owe everything to me? I made them. I made them like a like a tailor who makes a suit of clothes. I beg your nobody, see? Teach them what to say. My papers can't pay in expenses. Dish out a lot of groceries and coal. Get my boys to bring the voters out and then count the votes over and over again, and they add upright? Then he's elected. And what happens? Does he remember when the going gets tough when the heat's on? Oh, no. All he wanted was to save his own dirty neck. Yeah.
Public enemy, he calls me. Me, you gave him his public all wrapped up with a fancy bow on it. Yeah. What do I get mad about? Billy, he'll lay out my clothes. What suit, Johnny? With gray on and a white shirt. Nora. Your name is Nora, Not a little white cat. What are you sore about, honey? Keep away from me. Ah, we don't want messed up. You like style. I can tell. Keep away from me. You know, I knew one like you a long time ago. Scratched, kicked, bit. You even stuck a knife in me once. Well, you were kinda skinny as you was with a a real fireball. Her name was Maggie Mahoney.
And then for professional reasons, I had to change her to Gay Dawn. She was sure some knockout in those days. Yeah. I just like this one, Keri? Just like this one,
[00:24:28] Unknown:
Look at him. The great Johnny Rocco slapped by a girl. Shut up, old man.
[00:24:34] Unknown:
You hillbillies. There's nothing to stop me from wiping you all off. Give her a smack. Get it out of your system. That might be right for you, Curly. But not for Johnny Rocco. Any giraffe soldier, I ask for it. No. Smacking her isn't enough for such an insult. He'd have to kill her, and he'd have to kill the rest of us because we witnessed it. But he needs your help, so he's gonna forget it. Wise guy. Regular wise guy. Who knocked the door? I locked the door. I locked the door. I'm Mister Blonde Johnny signing off again. Now let her out. Get out all of you. How about I get dressed? I'd take off my hat to you, soldier. It's a good thing you said what you did. I know Johnny. He started shooting. And where is everybody? Downstairs?
[00:25:15] Unknown:
Oh, hi, everybody. Where's Johnny? In his room. I need a drink. What's everybody doing upstairs? This temple. Hey. What's wrong, honey? You've been crying? Has somebody been mean to you? Oh, him, Did you make her cry? I may be partly responsible. Well, you ought to be ashamed. Come on downstairs. Downstairs. Come on. Let's go to the bar, honey. Have a little drink. We'll chase the blues away. Okay. I think I think I'll have one. The boss said that I don't care what he says. I need a drink. I don't feel well. How many times do I have to tell you? Johnny says no more drinks. This is a free country. If I want a drink, I can have one. I can buy my own. See?
[00:26:05] Unknown:
Yeah.
[00:26:06] Unknown:
Well, it's money, isn't it? Take it. Sorry, baby. The boss is The boss. The boss. Telephone. He can hello, darling.
[00:26:16] Unknown:
Yeah. How come it's not at night and then what day? When it's raining and then when it ain't? Well, wise guy? I don't know. You don't know? I thought you was a wise guy from way back. You got a million dollars? No. Not much. Nothing. But you're a wise guy. Johnny, why don't you talk to me? Well, wise guy, you see, miss Sorocco, I was educated only in impractical things. With you, it's just the opposite. I am afraid of the storm. I I hate thunder. Hey, Bob. Pop. This is a hurricane, A real thing? It's the beginning. Oh, I'm afraid. Can, cars get through during a hurricane? Maybe. Maybe not. I think

I'll have a a scotch and soda, please. Oh, no. No. Oh, please, darling.
[00:27:00] Unknown:
Bill, McLeod. Yes, sir. You know, I can see right through you. You're saying to yourself, I'm better than Rocco. He's felt like the old man says here. Right? Right. You say to yourself, Rocco's got a gun. I have. You figure it's a gun. Well, listen, soldier. That was a guy who's got gun, but there's only one Johnny Rocco. How do you account for that? He knows what he wants, mister Sure. And what do you want? Tell him, Rocco. Well, I, I want, he wants more. Yeah. Yeah. That's it. More. I want more. Will you ever get enough? Well, I never have. I guess I won't. You.
You know what you want? I had hopes once. I gave him up. Hopes for what? A world in which there's no place for Johnny Rocco. Okay, soldier. Here's your chance. Give me your gun, Kelly. Now you take my soldier. Go on. Take it. That's it. Alright. You can make your host come through. But you gotta die for it. See what I'm aiming? Right at your belly. Go ahead. Shoot. You got a gun now? Gonna use it or not? Kill him, Frank. Yeah. Yeah. Kill him. Go ahead. Now show him how you're not afraid to die for your hopes. No.
One Rocco more or less isn't worth dying.
[00:28:19] Unknown:
Give it to me. Give me the gun in the same chance. Oh, no, papa. I'm afraid you'd use it.
[00:28:25] Unknown:
What's the matter? What's the matter, Nora, honey? You look like you lost somebody near and dear, a live war hero. Well, now I know how you did it. Hey, Curly, gay, anybody. Want a hero? Here's one for sale, cheap. Alright, Rocco. I sure need to play that game. He got the gun. Clyde got the gun. Kill him, Clyde. Kill him. You could stop. Happening, go and out that door, Rocco. Or to listen next Monday night to the Luxe Radio Theater presentation

of Dear Ruth starring Joan Calfee.
[00:28:56] Unknown:
The gun was lost.
[00:28:58] Unknown:
He didn't have a chance.
[00:29:00] Unknown:
Murderer. If I had to do it all, mad or he would have been out that darn gown. He's sure gone now, Johnny. You were right, little lady. That gun wasn't loaded, but the price deputy didn't know it. But you didn't Good was it, didn't you, Freddie? You could tell by by the weight.
[00:29:14] Unknown:
No. No. I didn't know. Oh, but you were smart, fella. I always think it's better to be a live coward than a dead hero.
[00:29:22] Unknown:
Oh, excuse me. I I I thought I'd talk
[00:29:26] Unknown:
You weren't afraid, son. We know that. I was afraid.
[00:29:30] Unknown:
That's not why I didn't pull the trigger. What do I care about Johnny Rocco? Whether he lives or dies. Rocco wants to come back to America, let him let him be president. I fight nobody's battles but my own. No, Frank. No. Yeah, sir. That's good. Rocco for president. If I believed your way, I'd wanna be dead. It's true you are. Hey, judge. Get rid of the deputy. You and Curly, get rid of him. As for you, sister, I want something to eat. Our best is none too good for Johnny Rocco. Yeah. Well, now you're talking, sister. Molly, you go to the kitchen with her angel. I ain't ready to die yet, not from cockroach poison.
He's on the phone, boss Ziggy. Why ain't he here? Why ain't he coming? Oh, he's coming. Alright. Give me that phone. Hey. What's the idea, Ziggy? Why don't you start here? Well, we got a hurricane here too. So what? Now look. Look. Wait a minute. Keep crying. What do you look. I make the run from Cuba. I risk my neck, and you won't come out in the rain. I'll give you two hours to get here. You ain't here by ten. The deal's off. Hello? Hello? Hello? Hello? Someone's gone dead. So why do you hear what I had to say? Gay. Can I say no drinking? No, please, honey. Just one.
[00:30:46] Unknown:
Some people at the door, mister Russell.
[00:30:49] Unknown:
They wanna come in. Hey, some Indians, boss. Getting kinda blowy out there, I guess. Well, send them away. Get rid of them. No. You have no right. Zoey has no right. I'm going upstairs. You're not going anywhere, Sonny. Well, mister Mcleodings, you got any conversation left? I've said my piece. You sure did, wife guy. Well, let's talk about her. The lady on the bar too. You know, one thing I can't stand is a Dame that's a drunk. What I mean is they tear my stomach. Nobody to themselves or anybody else. Drunk? I haven't even had one drink. She's got the shakes, see? So she has a drink to get rid of them. That one tastes so good, she has another one. You gave me my first drink, darling. Oh, so it's all my fault now. Everybody has their first drink, they? But everybody ain't a lush. Well, if I had known you were gonna act this way, I wouldn't have come here. You know, eight years since I've seen her, Bob.
You wouldn't know her the same day. See, honey, you're as mean as can be. Mean as can now what does that remind me of? That's remember Johnny? In a song, she used to sing it. Yeah. Yeah. That's right. Yeah. Mean as you know, I gave her a first chance. Took her out of the chorus, made her a singer. Mention that while you're at it. See, Tony, I didn't mean anything. Yeah. She coulda had a future. That's right. She had everything. Yeah. Voice, looks, plenty of class. Yeah.
[00:32:06] Unknown:
Yeah. I was afraid. See, honey, I haven't met. Oh, look. Look. Hey.
[00:32:11] Unknown:
Why don't you give it your old song? Come on.
[00:32:14] Unknown:
You mean right now? Yeah.
[00:32:18] Unknown:
Oh.
[00:32:19] Unknown:
I can't. I sure you can. Please don't make me. Now look, if you were nice, if you sang your song for us, you can't have a drink? Well, can I have a drink? No. No. The song and the drink. Without any company? Ella, do you want the drink or don't you?
[00:32:37] Unknown:
Okay. Okay.
[00:32:39] Unknown:
Well
[00:32:41] Unknown:
You you should have seen me then, miss Temple.
[00:32:44] Unknown:
See, my gown were gorgeous. Only the best. And yet I hardly wore any makeup. Just some lipstick. That's all. And no lights when I came out. Just a a baby spot. They they play the intro in the dark and then the spot would come on and and there I'd be.
[00:33:03] Unknown:
Yeah. Well, go ahead. Go ahead now. Sing with the people, honey. Keep quiet everybody. Go ahead, Gaye. Sing.
[00:33:13] Unknown:
I'm moaning low, my sweet man. I love him so, though he's mean as can be. He's the kind of man. He's the kind of woman drink. Give me the
[00:33:41] Unknown:
No. No. No. There's no problem. Yeah. You are lousy. You need to finish that moment. Yeah. Here's your dream.
[00:33:52] Unknown:
Thanks.
[00:33:56] Unknown:
Johnny Johnny, let him alone now. Yeah. You're right. Let him alone. He ain't gonna slap him around. Hey, old man. The storm. How how bad can it get? How bad? Seven thirty five. Eight hundred people walked out to sea. Yeah. Well, how far away was that from here? Oh, do you mind? Yeah. Well, I I wanna drink. Fix everybody drinking. Well, everybody except her.
[00:34:25] Unknown:
Frank. I'm sorry about the things I said before. Forget it, Nora. You gave her drink here. He was ready to kill you for that, but that made no difference. You had to help her. Your head said one way, but your whole life said another. The other things, maybe they're true. Maybe it is a rotten world. But a cause isn't lost as long as someone is willing to go on fight. Only I'm not that someone. You may not want me, but you can help me. What do you know about me? A lot from the way you look and talk
[00:34:59] Unknown:
from the things Georgia. I know. I know. I know. I'll break it up over there, Willie. I don't
[00:35:02] Unknown:
like people whispering. Why is everybody so quiet? Well, go on. Talk right now, Jerry. You, Curly, say something. What what do you want me to say, Jerry? Anything anything just so it's all. Go on. Go ahead. Well, well, I'll bet you two, three years we get prohibition back. Yeah. Go on. Go on. This time we make it sick. Yeah. Yeah. I bet you two, three years, probation comes back. Absolutely. Yeah. I bet you. The trouble was the part. I mean, too many guys wanting to be on top. One mob gets to massacre and the other. The paper's made up big, big. See, so what happens, Look, cash. Luck, papa. I don't believe it. These hundred guys getting washed out of sea. A liar, old man. 200 miles an hour. That wind moved. The tidal wave 12 feet high went right across the key. Now you're not afterwards, bodies were found in the mangrove swamp. You don't like it, do you, Rocco? It's gone.
Show us your gun, why don't you? If it doesn't stop shooting, so the public votes out prohibition and that's the end of the month. Next time, it'll be different. The we learned our lesson. Alright? Next time, the months will all get together. I'm asking God I'm asking God almighty to make a big wave. No. No. Send the crashing down, others. Destroy us all if need be, but punish him. Shut up, papa. I'm warning you. Jeremy. Jeremy.
[00:36:07] Unknown:
I'll kill you. The devil don't. He will. You don't have to stand in front of me. Let it go. I'm asking I guess we both forgot this, bro. You've gotten it's empty. It ain't empty now. I'm lowering it. See, wise guy? Honey, we'll all be killed in this place. The storm is getting worse. It's slowing down. The whole place is slowing down. How's nice, Johnny?
[00:36:33] Unknown:
This guy, Hamilard. This guy, Hamilard. This guy, Hamilard. This guy, Hamilard. This guy, Hamilard. This guy, Hamilard.
[00:37:10] Unknown:
In a moment, we'll present the third act of Key Largo. I believe our guest tonight, miss Debbie Reynolds, has established a record.
[00:37:19] Unknown:
You must be the youngest starlet on the Warner Brothers lot, Debbie. Well, I'm 17, mister Keeley, and I was lucky enough to be signed even before I graduated from high school. Wonderful. Had time to catch your breath yet? Not quite, mister Kealey. There's so much to learn. I never miss a studio showing of a new picture. One that especially impressed me was the hasty heart. Ah, yes. The most unusual story starring Ronald Reagan and Patricia Neal. That's right, mister Keeley. And in addition, there's Richard Todd, the new British actor. I'm perfectly sure he's going to make a hit over here. And moviegoers will applaud Patricia Neal as an army nurse. You know, she plays a role with great charm and conviction. Isn't she lovely? Ronald Reagan is the American soldier who falls in love with him. Well now, Debbie, who could blame him? She's mighty easy on the eyes. Oh, yes. A gorgeous blonde. And in her nurse's uniform, she's simply dreaming. What a complexion.
She's a luxe girl, mister Kennedy. Never neglects her daily luxe soap facial. Like most screen stars, she knows it's a care she can depend on, a gentle protecting care that's right for delicate skin. Well, it certainly works for me. It's a real beauty soap, and I'd like to recommend luxe soap care to any girl who wants a nicer complexion. Thank you, miss Debbie.
[00:38:25] Unknown:
Nicer complexion. Thank you, miss Debbie Reynolds, for that very sound beauty hit. Nine out of 10 screen stars, you know, use Luxe Auto Soap for daily complexion care. Try it for your precious complexion soon. You'll discover that this fine white soap with a delicate fragrance really makes skin lovelier.
[00:38:45] Unknown:
Here's our producer, mister William Keeling. The curtain rises on the third act of Key Largo, starring Edward g Robinson as Johnny Rocco, Claire Trevor as gay, and Edmund O'Brien as Frank. On Key Largo, the little hotel still stands. It's weathered another hurricane, and now the storm is passing out the sea. It's nearly 10:00. In the lobby, Johnny Rocco stands before a window peering out into the night.
[00:39:22] Unknown:
I don't mind telling you, Pop. That storm had me a little scared there for a while. I'm sorry it's gone. I'm sorry you're still alive. Well, keep praying, thought maybe something will happen. You think Ziggy's gonna show up? I sure will show up. Oh, we'll get out of here then, won't we, honey? I'm on pack. I'm ready to leave anyhow. Well, let's get upstairs, Curly. We'll get the stuff ready for once Ziggy gets here. Oh, Angel. Stay there. What do you want them? Yeah. Sure.
[00:39:46] Unknown:
You'll be leaving too, Frank? Yes. I guess so.
[00:39:49] Unknown:
Will we ever see you again? Well, I hope so. Why don't you stay right on here with us? You're most welcome. Go on and tell them, nor you tell them. Have you any folks? No. I'd be proud to have you regard us as your family. Maybe that isn't what Frank wants. Maybe Hey, boss. Boss.
[00:40:07] Unknown:
Hey. Where is he? Upstairs.
[00:40:08] Unknown:
What's the matter? Yeah. The vote's gone. Not a sign of it. Uh-huh. So he got it. And skip it. I told him I'd kill him, but he took the boat anyway just to save. Hey. What's that joke? No boat. It it strikes me funny. Now there is a boat, all ready for his man of a dock. But we gotta borrow your boat. Who's gonna run it for you? Answer me that. That's right, Johnny. We don't know nothing about boats. He is gonna run it. A soldier. A wise guy. He knows about boats. Don't you? Yeah. Some. His first sweetheart was the boat. I heard him tell her. Now you're taking us to Cuba. Why should I? Because you know it'll happen to you if you don't. Besides, one Rocco more or less ain't worth dying for. Ain't that what you said? They caught the law of course. Sheriff. Okay. One wrong boy out of anybody and he gets and he gets it. Mister Taco. Mister Taco. Understand the old man?
Alright, sister Lanterman.
[00:41:02] Unknown:
Just a minute, mister Wade.
[00:41:05] Unknown:
Hey, miss. I want a proprietor.
[00:41:08] Unknown:
He he's not here. You've been here?
[00:41:11] Unknown:
No. Not tonight. That's for me. Put in a call for me from here about 07:00. It's for evening temple folks. Pretty good blow. Yeah. Regular hurricane. How's the road? Unpassable. I'm trying to find my deputy. By the way, on the telephone, who answered? Nobody was around, so I answered. I guess mister Sawyer must have got stalled along the road. Seen anything of the Indians, mister Campbell? Has that's the older brothers? No. Jack. Get up, you dog. Oh, dog. It gets a storm upsetting, so I don't mind saying. I've had it all a little upset. It's for me.
Jack. He's found something out there. You know that, Bart? You, you got a flashlight? Let's see what it is. Yeah. Yeah. He's found something all right. Let's go. Well, that's some dog he's got, mister Temple. He he found something alright. A dead man. That was him, Temple Clyde. He'd been murdered. Well, I don't like to say anything, sheriff. After all, it's not my business, but, those, those Indians you were talking about, they were here before. You see all this? Yeah. They were up there all during the storm. Left only a few minutes ago. I'll get them. I'll get them Indian. It's the last thing I do. No, Ben. No. You lied to me. Be careful. Your Indian's very tired soil. Watch yourselves all. You're one peep and I shoot. I think I hadn't seen the Osceola. July, didn't you? That burned. They murdered Clyde. That minion saw they could hide his body, but the storm tore it loose and threw it up right out there, right in front of your door. And that's where the crime belongs, right at your door. And that that that that shooting just now. They tried to get away. I killed them both. Kill them. You. What's your name? Hilton. Me?
Hard Brown address? Hotel Central, Milwaukee. Haven't I seen you someplace before? No. I don't think so. Who are these other men? They're friends of mine. We're all here from, Milwaukee, Sheriff. Deep sea fishing. See that y'all stay here. I'll be back in the morning. You did a great job, didn't you, hiding that party? Boss, how did I know the storm was Shut up. Ziggy. Here, Ziggy don't come now with it. Ziggy's here, boss. Him and his boys are here. What are you talking about? They drove up in the back while the ship was out hunting Indians. That's Ziggy.
Alright, Pop. You and the soldier boy and the dame inside. Get in your office. Oh, I'll hit you, Gabe. No. What are you I sat inside. Angel, you stay with him. I don't want no more trouble. Alright. Bring him in, Curly. Ziggy and his mom. Bring him in. Well, look at him. I think he well, well, well, well, well. You sure are a sight for sore eyes. Go bake the tea again, Johnny Pell. Hey. Put on a little weight. Now look who's talking. They, guess who's here? Uh-huh. The blonde. Remember? Gaye. Gaye dong. Gaye? Here? Oh, you think I'm kidding? Gay.
Come on. Come on. Get in here. Hey. As pretty as ever. Where you been, honey, all the time Johnny was away? Around. If I'd have known that, I'd have tried to be Johnny's town. Yeah. That's a hard, Ziggy. Alright, baby. Alright. Class ever signed. Why don't you go over there and fix yourself a drink? A drink? Yeah. No. I don't think so. Well, Ziggy, the, stuff's all here in this suitcase. Open up. Let's see. Hey, Lou. Lou. Come here. Who's he? Lou, just about the best expert there is on counterfeit dough. Yeah. Take a look, Lou. Yeah. The paper feels good. The plate works okay.
[00:44:53] Unknown:
Portrait's good.
[00:44:54] Unknown:
No breaks in the lines. Serial numbers check on? What do you think? I'm an amateur? That covers okay, Ziggy. Looks like high class merchandise. Okay. So far, yeah. Now bring out the engraving. I'll wait it. Now just don't stall, Ziggy. With you, I'm in kind of a hurry.
[00:45:08] Unknown:
I'm sorry, mister McCaug. If we meet, then what are you gonna do? Not much choice, is there? I'll run the boat for you. Well, no. No. Don't. Don't go with it. They'd they'd wait till you got inside of Cuba and then they kissed. She's right, Frank. Tell them you'll go. Then when you get outside in the dark, make a break. Run. Try to get away. Yes. You're the only chance fella. Out there in the dark, make a break.
[00:45:27] Unknown:
That's what my head says. You ain't gonna make a fight of it. I don't know. Not that one Rocco more or less makes any difference. What I said still goes. And it's just They'll kill you. A man's a fighter. He can't walk away from a fight.
[00:45:41] Unknown:
That's the answer, I guess. I know how he feels. Well, listen. They're leaving and made their deal. Yeah. Well, we we just wait now to see what happens.
[00:45:50] Unknown:
Hey, yo. McLeod. Come in here. All of you come in here. Your friends leave? Yeah. Are you coming with a soldier? Yes or no. I'm in a hurry. You win, mister Rocco. Yeah. I thought you'd change your mind. Well, Nora, wanna come along, sister? Wanna come along? Where are my things, Johnny? I better get my things. Oh, I, forgot to tell you. You're not coming. Johnny. You've done. Johnny will waste your time, partner. Get away from me. Now stay close to the soldier, Willow. If he tries anything, let him have it good. So long, old man. Next time you have a hurricane, think of Johnny Rock. Frank.
[00:46:43] Unknown:
Goodbye, Frank. Good luck, son. Thanks.
