[00:01:10] Unknown:
What are those bars, Tom? Roadblock, ma. An old mess of people carrying shotguns. You grab a hold of that jack handle, Pa. Look to god you don't have to use it. Where do you think you're going? Government camp. Name a weed patch. Goddamn, Master Ritz. Burn them out. Hearing it was down this here road. Well, goddamn it, it ain't. And we ain't gonna have no goddamn okies in our town. Which way is it then? You turn and ride around again. Don't come back till the cotton's ready. Yes, sir.
[00:01:46] Unknown:

[00:01:48] Unknown:
Sons of bitches. You've done good.
[00:01:53] Unknown:

[00:01:56] Unknown:
Ain't gonna lift them bastards. Push us around, ma. What we turning off the highway for, Tom? Where's this dirt road go? Same ways as us, pa. South. Trying to get around the town instead of going through it. Why do these Californians
[00:02:14] Unknown:
hate us so?
[00:02:18] Unknown:
California, the promised land. We'd come from Oklahoma after we was tractored off our farm. All across the plains, the same thing happened. There was 13 of us started out. Grandpa died first night on the road. Grandma crossing the Mojave Desert. Brother Noah let out at the Colorado River. Couldn't bear to carry on. First place we camped in California, Connie Rivers run out on Rosas Sharon. Same place, reverend Casey got himself arrested instead of me after I slugged a deputy. We had to hightail it out of there before they came back and burned the camp. This weed batch government camp. Right first time. How many of you? Oh, me and Pa and Ma, Al, Rosa, Sharon, and uncle John, and Ruthie and Winfield, them last as kids.
Yeah. I guess we can fix you. Drive down the end of that line and turn right. You'll be in, Number 4 Sanitary Unit. What's that?
[00:03:19] Unknown:
Toilets, showers, wash tubs. You got wash tubs?
[00:03:23] Unknown:
Running water? Sure.
[00:03:25] Unknown:
Oh, praise god. Tom, I'll drive down the line. Me and Mark can get set up while you sign in. Okay, Paul. Be kinda quiet. These are a lot of folks sleeping. Sure. Don't you worry, mister. Yeah. I'll
[00:03:42] Unknown:
Name's Joad. Tom Joad. Jim Raleigh, camp manager. Howdy, mister Reilly. Come from Oklahoma. Been in California about a week now. That's fine. Got any money?
[00:03:52] Unknown:
Little bit. Why? Campsite costs a dollar a week, but, you can work it out carrying garbage, keeping the camp clean, stuff like that. We'll work it out. Camp committee will call on you in the morning,
[00:04:02] Unknown:
show you how to use the camp, tell you the rules.
[00:04:06] Unknown:
Cops? No cops. Just the committee. What committee is this anyway, mister Ronning? Works pretty nice. There's, five sanitary units. Each one elects a central committee man. That committee makes laws.
[00:04:18] Unknown:
The fellas that run the camp is just fellas camping here. Sure. It works, Tom. And, there ain't no cops. No cop can come in here without a warrant. Suppose a fella's just mean or drunk?
[00:04:31] Unknown:
First time, a committee warns him. Second time, they really warns him. And third time, they kick him out of the camp. Can't hardly believe it. Well, tonight, the deputies burn the camp by the river. They don't get in here. Some nights, the boys patrol the fences, especially at dance nights. Dance nights? Jesus Christ. Got the best dances in the country every Saturday night. Why ain't there more places You'll have to find that out for yourself.
[00:04:56] Unknown:
Ma's gonna like this place, mister Riley. We ain't been treated decent for a long time.
[00:05:03] Unknown:
Say, you looking for work, Tom? Sure. There's a committee man, named Willie. Him and his brother have been laying a pipeline for a farmer, nice fella. They could use an extra man. Holy Christ. You got anything else? Pa, Uncle John, and Al are looking. No, Tom. Job ain't gonna last long. Why in hell are you gonna get me on? I'll I'll make it shorter. Farmer wants it done quick. You seem like a nice fella.
[00:05:28] Unknown:
Come by around six. I'll introduce you to Willie. Reckon I'm gonna like this here weed patch. Good night, Mr. Raleigh. Good night, Tom.
[00:05:39] Unknown:
Rosa Sharon. Have you seen Ruthie and Winfield? I just woke up, ma. Darnation. Hope they're just playing and not getting under folks' feet. I don't feel good, ma. I'm gonna vomit. Of course, you're gonna vomit, Rose and Sharon. Everybody does. Now get it over and then you clean yourself up. I don't feel like doing nothing without Connie. Come on. I'll take you to the toilet block. Maybe them kids is messing around in there. I wish would come. Well, you get yourself upright. You've been moping enough.
[00:06:19] Unknown:
They're so wide. Them's the toilets. That is beautiful. Just like in the catalog.
[00:06:30] Unknown:
Oh,
[00:06:31] Unknown:
get get your head over one of them. Who do I like to That's what they're for. Oh, that's better. What's this handle for? Oh, Ma. I come down it now. I done broke it.
[00:06:54] Unknown:
Declare Rose of Sharon. If you can see the look on your face. Just listen to her a hissling and a switch, and I I didn't mean nothing. Just just the hold of a head. That's the way she works. When you finish, you pull that. What have you ladies done in here? I
[00:07:11] Unknown:
thought this here was for folks to use. For men folks? Can't you read what it says on the door? Men,
[00:07:22] Unknown:
I never seen it. Ain't there a place where we can go?
[00:07:26] Unknown:
I remember you, Joads came in last night. That's right.
[00:07:30] Unknown:
This here's my girl, Rosa Sharon. I didn't mean nothing, mister Honest. I'm Raleigh. You ain't talked to the ladies committee yet.
[00:07:37] Unknown:
They'll call on you pretty soon and, fix you up. Ladies?
[00:07:41] Unknown:
Come into my tent. Yep. Now if, you want a ladies' toilet, miss Joad, just, go outside the building.
[00:07:47] Unknown:
Wait. Thank you. But, I got, things to see to. Come on, brother Sharon. You go and get yourself washed, comb your hair. I don't feel like it, mom. This family ain't gonna be frawny when that their committee gets here. And you go and wash yourself and put on them shoes of urine and braid your hair. Alright, mom. Pa? John? Al, get yourselves up now. Oh, what's the matter, hon? There's a ladies committee coming to visit. We gotta clean up this here site. Yeah. You see, she don't get so goddamn clean. A fella can't live in her. Now look here, here, Pa. I'm awful busy. Now you go and wash Winfield in Ruthie's ears and their necks. I've seen you so bubbly, Ma. Tom's got himself some work. This here's a time the family got to get decent. Maybe me, Al, and John will strike lucky. Oh, I sure hope so, Pa. Better get moving. Ruthie,
[00:08:39] Unknown:
Winfield,
[00:08:50] Unknown:
Tom, you sure can handle a pick.
[00:08:54] Unknown:
I put in time with you. Yes, sir. Sure did.
[00:08:58] Unknown:
Kinda like the feel of bending my back again. Mister Darlin's got himself a first grade Mudstick man.
[00:09:04] Unknown:
One thing I can't figure, why did we drive here? Ain't you got a car? Nope.
[00:09:10] Unknown:
Had to sell our car, run out of food. Well, everything. We had no job. We was hungry.
[00:09:19] Unknown:
Took $10 for it. Well, that's too bad.
[00:09:22] Unknown:
We ain't had to steal yet, but goddamn it, we've come close. Morning, boys. Morning, mister Thomas. Who's this? No. This here's Tom Joad. What's he doing here, Willie? We wondered if you could see your way to put him on. Oh, sure. I put him on. I put everybody on. Seeing as you want the job done quick, we just thought we'd get started. Yeah. I've been thinking too.
[00:09:46] Unknown:
I've been paying you 30¢ an hour. Oh, goddamn it, this morning you're getting 25¢ an hour. We give you good work. You said so yourself. Yep. That's That's right. It ain't up to me. Bank told me. Bank of the West owns most of this valley, runs the Farmers Association. We done good work. Ain't you got it yet? Bank hires 2,000 men an I three. They told me, you're paying too much. Cut it down to 25. Cause unrest if you don't. Look,
[00:10:14] Unknown:
if you don't wanna set me on,
[00:10:16] Unknown:
I understand. It ain't Willie's fault. Alright. That ain't it. Look here at this newspaper. Last night, citizens angered at red agitators burned Squatter's Camp. All citizens were sent out by the associates. Why didn't I know that camp? There weren't no reds there. There's always red agitators just before a pay cut. So what you gonna do? We'll work, mister Thomas.
[00:10:41] Unknown:
Seems like I walked into something. My god. I'm gonna tell you something else.
[00:10:46] Unknown:
Now you fellas live up in that government camp, have dances every Saturday night? Sure do. What about them? Farmers Association don't like the government camps. Can't get a deputy in there. Now, if there was a big fight at the Dan's, a bunch of deputies could go in, clean the place up. Are you saying there's gonna be a fight in the camps Saturday night? Don't you ever tell where you heard? Why, for God's sake. Those folks ain't bothering nobody. They're getting used to being treated like humans. When they get back to the squatter's camps, it'll be hard to handle. I'm on the central committee. There won't be no fight. God, Jesus. I hope I ain't talk myself out of my farm, but I like you people.
Now get some ditch dug. Yes, sir.
[00:11:30] Unknown:
Oh.
[00:11:33] Unknown:
Rosa Sharon, you had a bath? It was wonderful, ma. Thank you. You get in a little stall like and and you turn the handles and water comes flooding down.
[00:11:45] Unknown:
Hot or cold water, just like you want it. Well, I'm a go in my safe just soon as I get finished here. Howdy.
[00:11:51] Unknown:
I'm Miss Sandry,
[00:11:53] Unknown:
Elizabeth Sandry. Well, I'm Miss Joad.
[00:11:55] Unknown:
This here's my girl, Rosa Sharon. Uh-huh, in the family way. What'd you think it's gonna be? Which do you rather?
[00:12:03] Unknown:
Boy, I guess.
[00:12:05] Unknown:
Are you saved? The sinners is awfully strong around here. Seems to me these nice people. Every side of the devil's just a strutting through this here camp. You seen them? Same as. Folks laughing and and dancing, and not just square dancing. Some just clutching hug dancing.
[00:12:23] Unknown:
You wanna watch out for that there baby. Don't worry yourself on our count. Girl just like you, she hug danced and dropped her baby dead. Oh, my. Get up, miss Sandry, before I get to be a sinner telling you where to go. I thought you was Christian. So
[00:12:35] Unknown:
get to be a sinner telling you where to go. I thought you was Christian. So we are. No. You ain't your hell burning sinners. I can see that innocent child in that there girl's belly a burning. Come on. Before I bring you with a skillet. Have it a fart. Get. And don't you ever come back or I'll drain you. So help me. Drop that baby dead, she dead. I seen people like her before Rosa Sharon. Glory shouter. Can't bear to see folks happy. Heared what she said more. Now you ain't to pay no heed. She's just a crazy woman. I wished Connie was here. You gotta put him out of your mind.
Now look here. Before we left, I saved these. Ain't they pretty? Your pearl earrings more? Yours now, Rosa Sharon.
[00:13:28] Unknown:
I ain't got no time to wear them. You can wear them Saturday.
[00:13:32] Unknown:
These are dance. And we gonna put on our Sunday best and go.
[00:13:43] Unknown:
Look at all them people, Tom. All in their Sunday best. Ready for a hoedown, Willie.
[00:13:47] Unknown:
Tom? Hey, Willie.
[00:13:50] Unknown:
You all right watching the gate? Sure, Mr. Raleigh. This here's my paw and Uncle John. Come along to help. Appreciate it. Don't worry, Mr. Raleigh. We'll spot them before they get started, John? You sure these troublemakers is a comin', Mr. Raleigh? There's a car with six men parked down by the eucalyptus trees. Everyone got guns. That seals it, I guess. Got the fellas going around the fence to see nobody gets in, will he? Yeah. 12 told them not to hit nobody. Just push them out again. We got 20 more good boys. They're gonna be a dancing and, keeping their eyes open. For a sign of any trouble, they close intact. Sounds Sounds like you worked her out pretty nice, Mr. Roling. Goddamn lucky we got word they was gonna try and bust up the dance. They'll pay for their sins. I think we ought to squash the hell out of them. No, that's what they want.
We don't want them fellas hurt. Might have to give them a kick or two. If you blood them up, them deputies will get you. Come and say we ain't order me. They've tried it before, other places. A little kick ain't gonna hurt none. If you got to sock them, Willie, sock them where they won't bleed.
[00:14:48] Unknown:
Oh, come on. All right, I hear you.
[00:14:51] Unknown:
Couple of fellas coming along now. I think they might be ours. How do you know, Tom? Don't look cheerful like the other folks. Look kinda scared.
[00:15:01] Unknown:
Okay. I'll go and find out who asked them. Tom, Willie, you follow me in. Hey, John. I'll watch the gate.
[00:15:14] Unknown:
Sure.
[00:15:15] Unknown:
You know when he was young, oh, but your pa was as nice a dancer as I ever seen. I remember a dancer as Al's got himself a partner.
[00:15:26] Unknown:
Real pretty too. Middle of the floor.
[00:15:30] Unknown:
Hope he ain't causing no trouble.
[00:15:34] Unknown:
There's Tom too. He's out of the dance floor. Don't reckon he's fixing to dance none.
[00:15:40] Unknown:
I wished you could find yourself a nice girl.
[00:15:48] Unknown:
Oh, you you dance awful good, Julianne. Why Why, thank you, Altoed. And you're even prettier than you dancing. You sure got a slippery tongue. Well, I aim to show you how slippery later.
[00:16:07] Unknown:
You, you dancing again? Sure.
[00:16:13] Unknown:
Oh. Well, hey, mister. Watch where you're going. I'm a dancing with this gal. She's my partner, mister Now listen, you goddamn son of bitch. Get lost. Who you call names? That's enough, mister
[00:16:22] Unknown:
Let go of me. That'll be your partners at the main gate. I don't know what you're talking about. Alrighty. Let her go. Woo hoo.
[00:16:34] Unknown:
Let's leave these young folks to their dancing. To the land. Come now. I ain't done nothing. Come quiet or you and your friend will take a beat. I guarantee it.
[00:16:43] Unknown:
Get up out of here. Get up out of here. Get up. What? What do you want, Deputy? Open up, old timer. Let me hear you got a riot. We ain't got no riot. Listen to that music. Open up. I'm Raleigh, camp manager. Who are you? Deputy sheriffs.
[00:17:08] Unknown:
Got a warrant? Don't need no warrant as a right.
[00:17:11] Unknown:
You hear a riot, mister Joad? No, mister Raleigh. Can't say as I do. How about you, John? All I can hear is folks having a hoedown.
[00:17:20] Unknown:
That a crime in California?
[00:17:22] Unknown:
Quit stalling. Open up. We got no reason to. You best go on now. I'll run you in for being a goddamn red Raleigh. We got no riot, deputy.
[00:17:31] Unknown:
You go along. Son of a bitch. Okay, fellas, let's go. Bye.
[00:17:42] Unknown:
Everything okay down here? Heard the whistles. Everything's just fine. How about on the dance floor? Sure was didn't I, Mr. Raleigh. They didn't even swing once. Took them to the fence and kicked them out like you said. Who was that, Tom? Funny thing, Paul. They was just ordinary fellas like us.
[00:17:59] Unknown:
Hungry, I guess. Trying to earn a buck. They'll stay hungry now. No fight, no pay. There's a change a comin'. Maybe we won't live to see her, but she's a comin'. Folks are restless. Yeah.
[00:18:10] Unknown:
Things is getting pretty mean out here. Burn that Hooverville, beat up folks. I've been thinking, all our folks got guns. Mhmm. What are you saying, Tom? Maybe it's time we put our guns together. Had us a turkey shoot. Spring is beautiful in California. Purple prunes soften and sweeten. Scent and a half a pound. Hell, we can't pick them for that. Can't pay no wages. Prunes carpet the ground, and the valley is filled with the odor of sweet decay. Cherries, pears, grapes, oranges. Too much fruit can't make a profit. Men who can transform the land can find no way to let the hungry eat their produce.
The smell of rot fills the country. I like weed patch. Shame we had to leave. Well, I weren't gonna watch my family starve no more, Paul. What if we end up in one of them Hoovervilles again? Peppermint can't got hot water and toilets to Well, we can't eat no toilets. Suppose there ain't no work up north. Ain't no use thinking like that, Paul. We was in Weed Patch for a solid month, and the only work we got was my five days. We gotta get some decent food.
[00:19:24] Unknown:
Wingfield can't eat no more fried dough. He's a jerking and twisting in his sleep. And Rosa Sharon's getting close to her time.
[00:19:34] Unknown:
She's getting stranger than a jackrabbit.
[00:19:36] Unknown:
Keep saying she don't want no baby. Well, that's because she's scared and hungry.
[00:19:40] Unknown:
She's got to be fed up, Paul. It's why we's moving. Time was when a man said what we do. Seems like women is telling now.
[00:19:50] Unknown:
Like, it's pretty near time to get out of stick. You get bacon inside the little fellas and Rose of Sharon before you get your stick tossed, because I got a stick all laid out too. Tarnish.
[00:20:01] Unknown:
Stop the goddamn truck, Tom. Stop it, tell you. What you doing, Paul? Gonna ride up top where I can breathe easy. He's like us not to take a smack at you, mom. You're riling him pretty good. He's alright, Tom. He ain't beat. You just to tread him on?
[00:20:24] Unknown:
Man gets worried and it eats out his liver, and pretty soon you just lay down and die. And if you can make him mad, well, he'll be alright. I'm a getting tired, ma. How about making me mad? You got more sense, Tom. I got to lean on you. I know you won't give up.
[00:20:44] Unknown:
I got talking to a union man back in Weepatch. You ever wonder why them deputies didn't just bust in and raise hell like every place else, ma? Ain't got no time for wondering no more. It's because we're all working together. Deputies couldn't pick on one fella because he'd be picking on the whole darn camp. We had to leave, Tom. We ain't got no food. I know, Ma. But this fella organizing for the union at the camp says we could do that any place. They'll just pick up your leaders and then where are you? We gotta figure out sometime, Ma. If a fella owns a team of horses, he don't raise no hell if he got to feed them when they ain't working. But if a fella got men working for him, he just don't give a damn.
[00:21:24] Unknown:
Something happening up ahead, Tom?
[00:21:27] Unknown:
Car stop. There's a sign. If you wanna work, pull over. Well, we surely do. Morning. Howdy, mister. That sign mean what it says? Sure. Can you pick peaches? We never done it, Tom. We can pick anything.
[00:21:47] Unknown:
There's plenty of work about 40 miles north of here. You tell us how to get there, and we'll get it open. Go north to Pixley, then turn east, about six miles. Ask for the Hooper Ranch.
[00:21:58] Unknown:
We're on our way. You know where there's other people looking for work? Sure. Down at the Weed Patch Camp. There's plenty looking. I'll take a run down there. Thanks, mister. Be seeing you. Hear that, everyone. We got a sniff of some work. Yeah. Orchards and vineyards all hanging with fruit. Country sure look pretty, don't you?
[00:22:32] Unknown:
I ain't really felt so good for a long time. How am I gonna save up? Get me a job in a garage in town?
[00:22:39] Unknown:
Live in a room and eat in restaurants? We picked plenty of peaches, we might get a little house. Why are we slowing out?
[00:22:46] Unknown:
Looks like there's a wreck up ahead.
[00:22:48] Unknown:
It ain't another roadblock, is it? Uh-oh.
[00:22:51] Unknown:
Cops, you better stop, Al. Where are you headed? Hooper Ranch. To pick peaches. One more. Better take this patch through. What's the matter? Why all these cops? You got a little trouble up ahead. And don't you worry. You'll get through. Just follow the line. Don't need no cops to lead us.
[00:23:12] Unknown:
I don't like it. What the hell are we going so fast for?
[00:23:22] Unknown:
These folks are yelling.
[00:23:23] Unknown:
They look like our people. They're turning off up ahead, Al. Slow down.
[00:23:32] Unknown:
A lot of guards everywhere, all carrying shotguns. I don't like it. Another checkpoint.
[00:23:44] Unknown:
Wanna work? Sure. But what is this? Not your affair. Name? Joad.
[00:23:49] Unknown:
How many men? Four. Women? Two.
[00:23:53] Unknown:
Kids? Two. Can all of you work? Well, I guess so. Okay. You're in, House 63. Wages 5¢ a box. No bruised fruit. Go to work right away. Why all the guns, mister? Just two of you work, mind your own business, you'll be alright. Move on now. I sure do wanna make us feel at home.
[00:24:22] Unknown:
Never thought I'd come to this time
[00:24:25] Unknown:
picking peaches. It's a job, Al, and we got a house to go with. I ain't nothing but a dirty old shotgun shack. You fellas getting on all right? Sure, Pa.
[00:24:36] Unknown:
Christ don't mind it. Rather work in a garage. Now you just quit blow blowing out. Get to work. You ain't so big I can't lick you yet. Goddamn
[00:24:45] Unknown:
it, Pa.
[00:24:46] Unknown:
My box's about full. I just made a nickel. Only gotta do that there 20 times for a dollar. You keep working while I take her over. Yeah. First box. Where do you want her?
[00:25:06] Unknown:
No. No good.
[00:25:09] Unknown:
Put it over there. What do you mean no good? Dumped them in the box, didn't you? Well, every damn peach is bruised. I warned you before you started. Goddamn it. Put them in easy or you're working for nothing.
[00:25:23] Unknown:
You don't like it. There's plenty of others ready to take your place.
[00:25:27] Unknown:
No. No, it's okay. Uh-huh. What's the matter? Might as well dump what you got, Pa. Yours the same as mine. You too, John. What? Now what the hell? Well, they're all bruised.
[00:25:47] Unknown:
We gotta pick easier. Oh, what do you mean? We can't drop them in. Lay them in. Gotta take a lot longer to fill a box, Tom.
[00:25:54] Unknown:
If we wanna eat tonight, we better get picking.
[00:26:02] Unknown:
I ain't heard that for a long while. Sound of people tucking in. You wouldn't think just reaching up and picking, it gets you in the back. It'd be alright in a couple of days. Got any more, ma? Oh, I'm sorry, Rosalyn. I'll get you some milk tomorrow. You must've gotta get milk today. I didn't have enough, honey. We made a dollar, ma. I know. And you and a dollar's worth. Don't seem like it. They charge extra at the store here. 3¢ here and 5¢ there. I argued, but they just told me to go to town if I don't want to. Well, I'm still hungry. Well, you get in a full day tomorrow. We'll have plenty then.
[00:26:40] Unknown:
Say, Pac, I'm gonna walk out, see what all the fuss is outside the gate. Wanna come?
[00:26:47] Unknown:
No, Tom. Seems like I just been beating my brains to death for a hell of a long time. I'm gonna sit awhile and then go to bed.
[00:26:57] Unknown:
How about you, Al? Well, guess I'll look around here first. Well, come along. You can billy goat later. Who says I'm a billy goat?
[00:27:05] Unknown:
Besides, you may not be able to get out of this place with all them guards around. I done my time at McAllister, Al.
[00:27:11] Unknown:
They ain't keeping me in here if I don't wanna. Tom,
[00:27:14] Unknown:
you be careful.
[00:27:16] Unknown:
Yeah, Ma, I'm just going for a walk.
[00:27:18] Unknown:
Ain't no harm in that. I sure hope not, Tom.
[00:27:26] Unknown:
Dump potatoes in the rivers and guards along the banks, squirt kerosene on the oranges, slaughter the pigs and bury them. The people come to fish for potatoes and the guards hold them back. They listen to the screaming pigs being killed, watch the mountains of putrefying oranges. Children dying of pellagra because a profit cannot be taken from an orange. There is a crime here that goes beyond enunciation. In the souls of the people, the grapes of wrath are filling and growing heavy for the vintage. I reckon they'll come tonight. Reckon they'll come after you. Baby. Them deputies got you figured as a strike leader. They called you the long, lean one. Yeah. I ain't no leader. We decide things together. Hell, Casey. We'd have given up by now without you.
Men are worn out. You mean the fellas? Who the hell are you? I'm just going past. Tom Choad.
[00:28:28] Unknown:
Is that you? Jim, Casey. For Christ's sake, what are you doing here? Tommy,
[00:28:32] Unknown:
hell, it sure is good to see you. Know this man Casey? Christ, yes. I knowed him for years. Come west with him. Well, that's putting it small, preacher.
[00:28:41] Unknown:
You said words over my grandpa. Took the rap in that Hooverville when they was gonna arrest me. Never did get the chance to thank you. Glad to meet you, Joad. Casey told us a lot about you. So where's your folks, Tommy? We heard there was work this way. A bunch of state cops run us into this here ranch, and we've been picking up peaches all afternoon. Didn't you see the pickets? Seen a bunch of fellas yelling. Guards wouldn't tell me nothing, so I come in here to see what's going on. The hell the hell did you get here, Casey?
[00:29:08] Unknown:
Last time I seen you, you were headed for jail. Yeah. Jailhouse is a funny kind of place, Tom. Great big old cell, and she's just full of guys, a coming and a going. Well, I talked to all of them. Now, here's what I come to. It's need makes all the trouble.
[00:29:23] Unknown:
You see, if we stick together, we can get what we need. That's what's going on here. Yeah. You sticking together? Yeah. We struck. Couldn't live on the pay.
[00:29:31] Unknown:
5¢ a box ain't much, but a man can eat. 5¢? They're paying you 5¢. Yeah. They says it's gonna be 5¢ when we came to work here. We arrived, they says they're paying 2 and a half cents a box.
[00:29:41] Unknown:
Jeez. You can't eat for that. That's what we says, and we struck.
[00:29:45] Unknown:
Well, they drove us off. And all the cops in the world come down on us. When they bust us here a strike, Tommy, I think they'll pay you 5¢. Dunno.
[00:29:54] Unknown:
Paying 5 now. Can't last much longer. Tell the folks at the ranch that they're starving us, stabbing us in the back. Oh, tell them that we had food tonight.
[00:30:03] Unknown:
You think Ma's gonna wanna starve that baby just because a bunch of fellas is yelling outside the gate? Yeah. One time in jail, they gave us some sour beans.
[00:30:11] Unknown:
A fella started yelling. Nothing happened. Then another fella starts yelling. Pretty soon, we all got yelling. And by God, something happened.
[00:30:21] Unknown:
They come and run and give us some other stuff to eat.
[00:30:24] Unknown:
You see? Don't think I do, Casey. Well, maybe you gotta find out for yourself, Tom. Hush up a minute. Listen. What is it? You hear that?
[00:30:36] Unknown:
Oh, you're just jumpy as a grasshopper.
[00:30:39] Unknown:
I guess so. I hear. Sounds like guys come from every which way. Guess they're fixing the bus to strike tonight. Well, we better get out of here. Under the bridge span. Follow me, okay? Quick. I don't get you, Casey. That's right. You're gonna get yourself killed starting a union. Yeah. I can't help that, Tom.
[00:30:57] Unknown:
That was the start things like to get killed. Thanks, Paul. Just natural as rain. So why do her then? Because you have to. We do what we can.
[00:31:04] Unknown:
If a time is a little step forward Now, boy. She may slip a little, but she never slips clear back. There they are. There's a deal of cold bastard. A standstill will shoot you down. You fellas don't know what you're doing. You're helping to starve kids. Shut up, you red son of a bitch. I'm gonna crush you like a bug.
[00:31:25] Unknown:
Casey. Casey. Jesus. He done bust his head plumbed squash. Yeah. Serve the red son of this right. You killed him. Won't be leaving no more strikes then, won't you? See how you like it? Duh.
[00:31:40] Unknown:
Hands up. You guys can't read hit a patriot after us. Jesus, God. You, Casey's friend, get away. Head down the creek. Old covert leads back to the road. Look out. Got him. After him, boys. Over here on the spot, breaking up off your g phone. We catch
[00:32:15] Unknown:
Rise and shine, everyone. Come on. Ruthie, Winfield? Mhmm. You too, Al. What time is it? Time you was getting ready. Tom. Tom? That you laying under that sheet?
[00:32:28] Unknown:
Yeah, Mark. It's me. Tom?
[00:32:32] Unknown:
What's the matter? What have you done to your face?
[00:32:37] Unknown:
Don't talk so loud.
[00:32:38] Unknown:
I got in a fight. Tom Joad, you promised me. I couldn't help it, Ma. Are you in trouble? Yeah. I can't go out to work. I gotta hide. Something wrong with Tom, Ma? Never you mind, Rosa Sharon. You take Ruthie and Winfield and get them washed. Go on now. For a minute. Is it bad, Tom?
[00:32:57] Unknown:
Nose busted.
[00:32:58] Unknown:
Cheek too, maybe. No. I mean the trouble.
[00:33:01] Unknown:
Yeah, Ma. It's bad. Jesus. I'm weak. I'm gonna tell y'all. Everyone gotta know, even the littlage might blab if they don't know.
[00:33:13] Unknown:
What the hell is this, Tom?
[00:33:16] Unknown:
Last night, I went to see what all the yelling was about, and I come on Casey. The preacher? Yeah, Uncle John. Only he was a lead in the strike. They come for him. Who come for him? Same kind of guys turn us back on the road that night. Had pick handles. Oh. They killed him. Oh, Tom. Busted his head. I was standing there. I went nuts. Grabbed a pick handle. I clubbed a guy. What you saw? I guess so. They had the lights on us. Casey was a good man. What did he wanna mess with that stuff for? Said they'd come to work for 5¢ a box, but they got 2 and a half cents. Can't eat on that. Oh, that's why they struck. And I reckon they bust the strike last night.
We'll be getting 2 and a half cents today. Oh, sons of bitches. I can't get that picture out of my head.
[00:34:12] Unknown:
Him lying there. What we gonna do? By god, I know what I'm gonna do. I'm gonna get out of here. No. You ain't, Al.
[00:34:19] Unknown:
We need you now. I'm the one. I'm a danger now. Soon as I get on my feet, I gotta go. I don't like it. Well, can't help it, Al.
[00:34:27] Unknown:
It's your folks.
[00:34:29] Unknown:
You can help them. Think you killed this fella, Tom? I hope I killed a bastard. Oh, Tom. Don't talk like that. Killed a fella? Hush now, Rosa Sharon. Not so loud. By chance, I got to have a nice baby.
[00:34:41] Unknown:
Connie's gone. I ain't getting milk. Now he don't kill the fellow. Shh. You're gonna get folks in here. What do I care? What chance the baby got to get Borac? Gonna be a freak. Get quiet, honey. First fella Tom Kilt neither. I don't wanna look at him no more. It's alright, honey.
[00:34:56] Unknown:
Now, Pa,
[00:34:58] Unknown:
break up some boxes for firewood. We gotta get breakfast. Now you got to work. Listen, everyone. If anybody asked you, Tom is sick. You got a plan, Ma? Soon as we get enough for gas, we're moving away. This ain't a good place. I ain't gonna have Tom out alone. No, sir. You can't do that, Ma. I'm just a danger to you. Everybody get off to work soon as you eat. We gotta make some money. I bet it's my sin brought this down on it. Shut up, John. We ain't got time for your sin now.
[00:35:29] Unknown:
What's going on here? We're going out. Don't wanna work for 2 and a half cents a box, You a bunch of reds? Oh, got a job offer. Good one. Yeah?
[00:35:39] Unknown:
Where's it at? Down by weed patch. Seems mighty strange leaving poor work's finished. We wanna get there before the job goes. Who's up top? Just my girl and uncle John and the little ones. They're hush now. They're sleeping.
[00:35:51] Unknown:
Let's have a look at you all. See, wasn't there another fellow with you? You mean the hitchhiker?
[00:35:56] Unknown:
A little short fellow with a pale face? Was he? Yeah. I guess that's what he looked like. Oh, we just picked him up on the way in. He up and left when the rate dropped. Hey, was he bruised this morning? I didn't see nothing. Are you looking for someone?
[00:36:09] Unknown:
Goddamn red. Killed a man in cold blood. Tall fella. Possees and vigilantes looking across the state. Be a lynching if they catch him. Oh, we ain't seen no,
[00:36:20] Unknown:
Can we go now?
[00:36:22] Unknown:
Okay. Keep your eyes peeled. He's a real desperado.
[00:36:27] Unknown:
Well, thank you, mister.
[00:36:34] Unknown:
Whew.
[00:36:35] Unknown:
I sure was close.
[00:36:36] Unknown:
Know where we're going out? Nope. Just going and getting goddamn
[00:36:41] Unknown:
sick of it. You alright back there, Tom?
[00:36:44] Unknown:
Kinda tight in here.
[00:36:46] Unknown:
You all through the ranch? Yeah. You better stay hid. Might get stopped. How's Rosa Sharon and the kids, John? Sleeping, mom. Well, keep wrapped up. It's a cold day. It's gonna be an early winter. Tell Al to keep in the back roads, ma. I hurt, Tom.
[00:37:05] Unknown:
So
[00:37:06] Unknown:
which way we going? Try north. We're done south. Okay.
[00:37:11] Unknown:
North it is.
[00:37:13] Unknown:
On the run. Gives you a funny feeling to be hunted. I'm getting mean.
[00:37:20] Unknown:
Everybody's getting mean.
[00:37:38] Unknown:
What is it, Al? A sign. Cotton pickers wanted. Well, sounds like Tom's seen it too. How far we come? 40, maybe 50 miles. If we all pick, we could get some money. And see? They've got some boxcars where the pickers live. What about Tom? Well, don't you worry about me, Emo.
[00:37:57] Unknown:
There's a creek over yonder full of brush. I can fix up and hide out. But dim bot's I'll just take this here blanket. You take care, Tom.
[00:38:20] Unknown:
And don't take no chances. Sure, mom.
[00:38:24] Unknown:
Be seeing you.
[00:38:35] Unknown:
Me cooking sure smells good, ma. Been a long time since we could afford to buy new clothes and meat, Al. Couple of weeks cotton picking, sure lightens a load. You're taking your time getting ready, son, going somewhere special or just billy goating her out? Her name's Aggie Wainwright, Pa, and we're stepping out together.
[00:38:52] Unknown:
I think I seen her. She's right pretty, Al. I know.
[00:38:57] Unknown:
I'll be seeing y'all. Ain't you staying for your supper? Leave me some. I'll get it later.
[00:39:03] Unknown:
Get up. I won't see him again till morning. Oh, sure is nice to see him smiling.
[00:39:10] Unknown:
Oh, I just hope Tom's okay. Yeah. He'll be fine, ma. We struck lucky for once. Oh, I guess. Got here in time to get one of these boxcars. Newcomers is having to camp down by the creek. How long you think the cotton's gonna last, Paul? Oh, not long. Gotta be picked before the rain comes and these new pickers coming every day.
[00:39:30] Unknown:
Did you get milk, ma'am? Sure, Rose of Cher. Give it to me. I ain't had any since noon. Here.
[00:39:37] Unknown:
You drink it like medicine.
[00:39:40] Unknown:
Nurse lady told me to. You planning on picking tomorrow, Rosa Sharon? And why not? I done picked all week. Well, you're close to your time. You should rest up a while. I'm gonna need money for the baby, ma. Gotta keep working while I can. Well, I wish you'd rest. You seen the little ones? There's hiding. Gonna take a beating. Gonna bow. Ruthie done tall. Bow time.
[00:40:02] Unknown:
That little bitch. Her fault.
[00:40:05] Unknown:
Got into a fight and told. Rosa Sharon,
[00:40:07] Unknown:
you come over to the corner and keep your voice down. Pa, stand at the door and keep a lookout. Alright, ma. Now what are you talking about, Rosa Sharon?
[00:40:15] Unknown:
Ruthie got into a fight. Mom big galloped and licked her. So Ruthie said she'd get her brother, and he'd kill that big girl. Oh my. Girl says she got her brother too, and Ruthie says her brother'd kill him because he killed two men already. And he's out hiding right now from killing a fella. Oh, my sweet dear lord Jesus. Asleep in a manger. What are we gonna do now? We ain't got to leave, have we, mom? No. Where are Ruthie and Winfield now? Told you. Hiding other side of the creek.
[00:40:44] Unknown:
Go and find them. Tell them it's alright and bring them back. Tell them they ain't gonna take a beating. Now, Paul, you heard what we said. I heard. You gotta stick around and look out for things. What you gonna do? I'm gonna try and find Tom and
[00:41:02] Unknown:
tell him. Tom?
[00:41:09] Unknown:
Are you there? Tom? Over here, ma.
[00:41:14] Unknown:
You shouldn't have came. Suppose somebody seen you with me. Whole family being a jam. I gotta see you, Tom.
[00:41:20] Unknown:
Can we go inside your hideout?
[00:41:23] Unknown:
Follow me. Keep low now. It's just a hole. You gotta crawl in. You okay now? Oh, fine. Can't see nothing though. Been living like a rabbit.
[00:41:47] Unknown:
What's that smell, ma? Pork chops and fried potatoes.
[00:41:52] Unknown:
God almighty. I'm still one. Tom,
[00:41:57] Unknown:
Ruthie told about you. Ruthie? What for? Well, it wasn't her fault. Got in a fight and says her brother will lick that other girl's brother. Says he killed a man and he's in hiding. Well, that's just kids stop talking. No. Them kids will tell it around. And pretty soon, well, they'll able to get men out to look just in case. You got to go away, Tom.
[00:42:23] Unknown:
That's what I said right along, ma.
[00:42:25] Unknown:
I know. But I wanted you near. I ain't seen you. Can't see you now. How's your face? Getting well quick. Come close, Tom. Let me feel it.
[00:42:42] Unknown:
Give me your hand. There.
[00:42:50] Unknown:
You got a bad scar, and your nose is all crooked.
[00:42:57] Unknown:
Maybe that's a good thing. Nobody know me now.
[00:43:01] Unknown:
Oh, my.
[00:43:03] Unknown:
Take it easy, ma. It's just the wind.
[00:43:07] Unknown:
I wanna touch you again, Tom. It's like I'm blind. It's so dark. I wanna remember even when it's only my fingers that remember. How's everybody doing, mom? Oh, we made out pretty good, Tom. I've been squirreling money away. I got $7 for you. I ain't gonna take it. Hey. You take this money. You hear me? You got no right to cause me pain. Then you can get to the big city, Los Angeles maybe. They would never look for you there.
[00:43:40] Unknown:
I've been all day and all night hiding alone. And guess who I've been thinking about? Casey. He was a good man. Used to talk all the time. Funny how I remember. Didn't even think I was listening. But I know now, a fella ain't no good alone.
[00:44:00] Unknown:
What are you aiming to do, Tom?
[00:44:02] Unknown:
What Casey did, ma. But they killed him. Yeah. Well, he didn't duck quick enough. I've been thinking a hell of a lot about our people living like pigs, and I've been wondering if all our folks got together
[00:44:15] Unknown:
Ranch. Tom, they'll drive you and cut you down like they done to pretty boy Floyd. They're gonna drive me anyways. They're driving all our people. They might hurt you. They might kill you and I wouldn't know.
[00:44:28] Unknown:
Well, maybe like Casey says, a fella ain't got a soul of his own. Only a piece of a big one. And then What, Tom? Well, then it don't matter. I'll be all around in the dark. Whenever there's a fight so hungry people can eat, I'll be there. Whenever there's a cop beating up a guy God, I'm talking like Casey.
[00:44:54] Unknown:
I don't understand.
[00:44:56] Unknown:
Comes with thinking about him so much. Seems like I can see him sometimes.
[00:45:03] Unknown:
And Tom, later, when it's float over, you'll come back, find us.
[00:45:12] Unknown:
Sure.
[00:45:15] Unknown:
You gotta get back, Ma. You take the money then. Please. Now hold out your hand.
[00:45:21] Unknown:
Alright. Now you better go. Give me a hand.
[00:45:31] Unknown:
Oh, starting to rain.
[00:45:34] Unknown:
Now go across the field till you come to a sycamore, then cut back across the stream.
[00:45:42] Unknown:
Goodbye, mom. Goodbye, Tom.
[00:46:00] Unknown:
Over the high coast mountains, the gray clouds marched in from the ocean. In the barns, the people sat huddled together. Some went to the relief offices. No luck. You gotta be here a year before you can get relief. Then the terror came over them. No work till spring. And if no work, no money, no food. The women watched the men, and where a number of men gathered together, the fear went from their faces and anger took its place. And the women's side with relief for the men would never break as long as fear could turn to wrath.
[00:46:40] Unknown:
How you feeling, Rosa Sharon? Oh, just plum tide all over more. That's what comes if it can cotton near your time. You gotta chill and drink this hot milk. Tastes funny. It's got bacon grease in it for strength.
[00:46:56] Unknown:
Did you see Tom, ma'am?
[00:46:59] Unknown:
Yes. I sent him away, far off.
[00:47:04] Unknown:
Didn't do nothing else, I guess. Hey, John.
[00:47:07] Unknown:
Don't know. Can't think nothing out no more.
[00:47:13] Unknown:
Help, It's wetter than an ocean out there. Al, take off your wet clothes. Let me drive them over here by the stove. Did you fix the truck, Al? I took the tarpaulin and laid her over the nose.
[00:47:22] Unknown:
Don't know whether it'll do any good. I've been watching that creek rising. Seems to me if she comes up, she'll flood us. Might at that. Yeah. If we was all to get our shovels and throw up a bank, I bet we could keep her out. Be a long bank. Dunno of them other fellas at Warner. They'd maybe rather move somewheres else. Yeah. But these here cars is dry. Ain't gonna find no place as good as this.
[00:47:45] Unknown:
If if Aggie spokes leave, I'm a gone too.
[00:47:49] Unknown:
You can't, Al. The truck. We ain't fit to drive her. We're vigorous to get married,
[00:47:55] Unknown:
and ain't nobody can stop us. Married hell. We're glad, Al.
[00:47:59] Unknown:
You're a grove man and you need a wife,
[00:48:02] Unknown:
but don't go now. Can you persuade her folks to help, Al? I can try. Be a lot of work and she might come over anyways. Well, we ain't doing nothing. Might as well be working.
[00:48:16] Unknown:
Did he kinda grab you all over, Rose and Sharon? Yeah. Come on. Can you stand up and walk? Now lean on me. That's it. Oh, I'm sorry, Mark. I ain't got the strength.
[00:48:30] Unknown:
She alright, Mark? Her time's come, John. We couldn't go if we wanted to. No, Paul. And we gotta build that bank. Now,
[00:48:37] Unknown:
Paul, let's go and talk to Deli. What? Let's do it. Let's get all this.
[00:48:46] Unknown:
You think that dock's gonna hold up?
[00:48:49] Unknown:
Why don't it come over if we had filled up, Better keep digging. She'd still run. You think it is it, John? You'll kill yourself. I can't help it. Can't stand that yelling.
[00:49:00] Unknown:
I got to work or I'll run away.
[00:49:03] Unknown:
Why don't I come up slower now? Gotta plant pretty far on the other side. She's still coming up, Yeah. Let's keep at it then. Look at that willow tree.
[00:49:13] Unknown:
Scream's gonna drag her loose.
[00:49:15] Unknown:
She'll burst the bank. We gotta stop her.
[00:49:18] Unknown:
Too late. She's going.
[00:49:20] Unknown:
There's a break. Try and pluck her. It's no use, Look
[00:49:28] Unknown:
out. John, what's the matter? Can't you swim? Thanks, give out. You stand up now. Can you make it up to the box cars? They still drive. I guess so. Come on then.
[00:49:39] Unknown:
Al, you too. I'm gonna try and drive the truck out, boy.
[00:49:44] Unknown:
Rocher, she done stopped screaming. You suppose she's done. I might call you if it was more. I wouldn't have minded just being carried away downstream
[00:49:56] Unknown:
as far as I could go. Think you can make it now, John? I guess so.
[00:50:01] Unknown:
Come on.
[00:50:10] Unknown:
We're back, ma'am. Rose is Sharon.
[00:50:14] Unknown:
How is she? Alright, I think. Sleeping. I heard shouting. Something happened?
[00:50:22] Unknown:
Dark bird. It's been over.
[00:50:24] Unknown:
All at work for nothing then. Yeah.
[00:50:28] Unknown:
Where's the baby?
[00:50:30] Unknown:
In the apple box over there. Apple box?
[00:50:33] Unknown:
What's her? Oh, poor little thing.
[00:50:41] Unknown:
What happened?
[00:50:42] Unknown:
Never breathed. Never was alive.
[00:50:46] Unknown:
Oh, no. That's because of my sin.
[00:50:50] Unknown:
We done what we could. I know.
[00:50:53] Unknown:
We couldn't have did nothing. There was only one thing to do ever, and we done it, Paul.
[00:51:01] Unknown:
I ain't no good no more. I spent all my time of thinking of home, and I ain't never gonna see it again.
[00:51:09] Unknown:
Women can change better than a man. Woman got all her life in her arms. Man got it all in his head.
[00:51:20] Unknown:
Don't know how high the water will rise. Might flood the car. Have to leave. Don't you mind. You
[00:51:25] Unknown:
gone and done it, Paul. That truck will never go again. If we moved her and said digging and water coming up fast. Oh, now, Al.
[00:51:34] Unknown:
We got sickness in the apple box. Oh, holy Jesus. Just cause trouble and sorrow while it stays. Will someone take it out and bury it? That's the law,
[00:51:48] Unknown:
but we can't help it. I'll do her.
[00:51:51] Unknown:
Are you sure, John?
[00:51:53] Unknown:
Come on. Give it to me.
[00:52:07] Unknown:
Set Rosa Sharon down on the highway, Pa.
[00:52:11] Unknown:
Oh,
[00:52:12] Unknown:
you okay, Rosa Sharon? I guess so, Pa. We gotta try and get dry, honey. Mark's car's flooded. We ain't had dry clothes for a day and a half. We left all our stuff behind, ma. Well, I'll look after it, Pa.
[00:52:25] Unknown:
I'm gonna stay with Aggie. When when the water goes down, we'll come back.
[00:52:29] Unknown:
Now let's get moving before it starts raining again. We seen y'all. Now you kids, don't you go too far now. I wonder why I'm playing with that.
[00:52:39] Unknown:
It was good of you to bury Rosashein's baby, John.
[00:52:43] Unknown:
Thank you. I never done her. I put the box in the stream like in the Bible.
[00:52:48] Unknown:
Well, our baby was dead, John.
[00:52:51] Unknown:
I told it to go down and tell him. Go down and rot and tell all them rich, well fed people what we've been going through.
[00:53:01] Unknown:
Seems like I'm so full of stuff that happened. Can't feel nothing no more.
[00:53:07] Unknown:
Was it my fault, Ma? The baby?
[00:53:10] Unknown:
Weren't nobody's fault, Rosa Sharon.
[00:53:13] Unknown:
I keep thinking it's a punishment because I've been sinful. It's because we're poor, Rosa Sharon.
[00:53:19] Unknown:
You gotta stop talking like uncle John.
[00:53:22] Unknown:
It's raining again, ma.
[00:53:25] Unknown:
What are we gonna do? Oh, John? Can you carry Rosa Sharon? Sure. Where are you fixing to go, ma? Well, there's a bond just up the pasture. Ruthie, Winfield, run up the field.
[00:53:37] Unknown:
We'll follow you. When you're ready, John? Okay.
[00:53:45] Unknown:
Alright, Rose Sharon. Thank you, Paul. Uncle John. Oh, no use hurrying. We went through anyway.
[00:53:58] Unknown:
Maybe we can get dry. Well, come on. It's not far now. Maybe there's hay inside. There is hay. Come on in.
[00:54:13] Unknown:
Set her down, John. Alright.
[00:54:16] Unknown:
Oh. Thank you. Lay down, little Sharon. I'll try and figure some way to dry you off.
[00:54:23] Unknown:
Look, ma. There's someone in the corner. A man and a boy.
[00:54:28] Unknown:
You own this here barn? No.
[00:54:30] Unknown:
We just come in out of the wet. Got a sick girl. You got a dry blanket we could use and get her wet clothes off? Sure. Here. Thank you. What's what's the matter with that fella? It's my pa. He's starving. Ain't it for six days. Give me the food. Now he's too weak. Well, you just be easy while I get them wet clothes off my girl. No. You gotta have super milk. You you fellas got any money to get any milk? Hush. We'll figure something out. He's dying, I tell you. Gotta have milk. Gotta. Ma, you thinking the same as me, Rosa Sharon?
[00:55:15] Unknown:
Yes, ma'am.
[00:55:19] Unknown:
I knowed you would. I knowed.
[00:55:26] Unknown:
Will you all go out?
[00:55:28] Unknown:
Why, ma? What's she gonna do? Hush it now. You go and stand under the eaves with Ruthie and Paul. You too, son. Is my paw gonna be alright? Maybe. Now go on outside. Ruthie,
[00:55:41] Unknown:
Winfield, you'll hear it.
[00:55:47] Unknown:
Go on, Rosa Sharon. I'll stand over here.
[00:55:55] Unknown:
Here you are, mister. I got plenty of milk. I know. You got to. Your boy needs you. Now go on. Just take what you need.
[00:56:12] Unknown:
That's it. There. That's it.
[00:56:44] Unknown:
